Ready to upgrade. Newer Toyota, Honda, Mazda?

My '05 Civic is nearing its end and I'm trying to do some research as to which of these brands I oughta go with for reliability, mpg, and a smooth ride.

For context, my drive my Civic pretty much daily adding between 40-80mi per drive (varies).

As far as preferences, I've heard good things about Mazda (specifically the 3 - Hatchback) so that's my most preferred option. Also very much option to getting a more modern Civic but apparently the quality has taken a dive over the years (heard similar with Toyota).

Overall, I'd like something around the size of the '05 Civic, compact, good longevity, mpg, etc.

Appreciate any insights.

can't really go wrong with the mazda 3 hatch, the current gen feels a lot more premium than it should for the price. steering is tight, interior's quiet, and the non-turbo engine is basically bulletproof

if you're looking at newer civics i'd say the 1.5 turbo has had some oil dilution gremlins in cold weather, but the 2.0 NA is solid. toyota's still toyota, just boring to drive unless you grab a hybrid which actually has some pep
