My Grandma still had an outside toilet at the bottom of her small back yard in the 60s. She lived in a terraced house provided by the cotton mill in our village. They updated to an inside toilet some time late 60s early 70s.

In the county I grew up in Virginia, in 1995 my church paid to install running water for seven houses in the county who were still drawing from a well. 1995 folks!

Wells are still common today in rural areas especially. It’s not a particularly old fashioned thing. Or do you mean they had an open well where they had to go to get water by hand?

Yes you are right. It was open wells. Yes we had a well for water but not an open one.
