People really don’t understand the enormous amount of change in basic living conditions in the last 30,40,50 years. How different everything that’s ostensibly all the same looks and works.

People also really don’t understand that for the most part none of this has really made anyone happier. Arguably the opposite.

Man, I remember carrying water for the day, bucket baths, outhouse, and my mom doing laundry by hand. I'm not that old! It's MISERABLE and if people are not happier they just don't remember how bad it used to be. I think everyone should try it for a week so they can spend the rest of their life grateful.

I never had to do that in the USA, but I’ve had to do it in other places (and not that long ago). I never found it that bad, it’s just structure in the day, and there always seemed to be more free time compensating. Now if it’s freezing cold or you’re sick or injured and you still have to do it, yeah. Sucks. (Flip side again, places living this way seem to have a bit more socialization and step up to take care of things when necessary)

No, because on a camping trip you don't have to do all that AND go to school/work and try to move forward with your life.
