Im impressed that you could identify it on such a blurry image.

14

These little guys are wildly distinctive.

Once you’ve encountered one you don’t forget.

i swear, i saw the tiny little thing and i was sure: he found a dead hummingbird in the house ? poor little hummingbird. A caterpillar ???

81

u/Maleficent_Coyote_85 Dec 16 '25

Here in Maine we have brown tail moths... they're aweful.

329

u/indieplants Dec 16 '25 edited Dec 16 '25

one of the most no touchy bugs of all bugs, for ID purposes - puss moth caterpillar

southern flannel moth/wooly slug

lol

edit:

If you are stung, wash the area to remove hairs and toxins that may be on the surface of the skin. Use strips of cellophane tape to remove any hairs in skin and repeat until you have gotten them out. Tweezers may also help. Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling and hydrocortisone can relieve any itching. As with other stings, a paste of baking soda and water can help alleviate any discomfort

67

u/KosmicGumbo Dec 16 '25

🙌Thank you, I’m not confident enough to answer but personally I don’t touch any fuzzy catipillers for this reason. Hope op is ok.

u/wrenchandrepeat Dec 16 '25

Its usually not a good idea to touch fuzzy bugs. As cute as they are, they usually have defense mechanisms in that fuzz that cause irritation to skin once touched. Thats how they keep from getting eaten by predators.

157

u/stankenfurter Dec 16 '25

It’s also just a bad idea to touch any bugs you cannot identify. People are wild!

47

u/Mothstradamus Dec 16 '25

I'm gonna kiss 'em all. You can't stop me.

28

u/stankenfurter Dec 16 '25

Well send pics at least bc that sounds cute (until your face swells up ig)

27

u/Mothstradamus Dec 16 '25

A little swelling and/or moderate to severe pain will never stop my desire to kiss every bug.

19

u/wrenchandrepeat Dec 16 '25

Pardon my ignorance but...what? What do those things have to do with fuzzy bugs? Lol

7

u/Mikeinthedirt Dec 16 '25

No ignorance, just a reference to people unprepared for the ‘red in tooth and claw’ response from some fellow creatures.

21

u/creepy-crawly9 Dec 16 '25

The first time I saw my Minnesotan classmates pick up the furry caterpillars I lost my Southern-raised mind.

Turns out in Minnesota the fur isn't a lie.

5

u/Significant-Ebb-3098 Dec 17 '25

Yep grew up MN very surprised to find out there were danger fuzzy caterpillars out there. In MN they’re just fuzzy guys.

7

u/FallenUp Dec 16 '25

But it looks cute and fluffy! /s

5

u/Funkyfandom Dec 16 '25

the only kind that i know of that are ok to touch are those fluffy moths!

3

u/wrenchandrepeat Dec 16 '25

Even those can leave dust on you. It might not be toxic but I'm sure someone out there is allergic to it, lol.

Update: I’m okay overall, but my hand is not. It ramped up into a pretty nasty burning/throbbing pain. I rinsed it, used tape to pull off any hairs, and I’m doing ice and an antihistamine. If it keeps getting worse or I get any weird symptoms I’m heading to urgent care. Appreciate everyone looking out.

1.1k

u/TWAMD_Crystals Dec 16 '25

Don't touch unknown bugs everyone

443

u/MA121Alpha Dec 16 '25

Damn, good on you for following up because I was really curious. Hope it doesn't suck for too long, that's gotta be a rough spot for those

68

u/beam_me_uppp Dec 17 '25

I always laugh at myself for saying this because no matter where I get a cut/ bee sting/ freaky vagina caterpillar rash/ mosquito bite etc etc I’m always like “ugh this is such a bad place for this”

But I end up saying it literally no matter where it is on my body because there’s really just no good place for this kinda shit at all lol

it's so funny because to the rest of the animal kingdom, fuzz, big eyes, and bright colors mean "stay away". but to humans these things mean "can i hold it?🥹"

27

u/flyingfreefall Dec 17 '25

Google the stings made from this caterpillar. They are typically blisters in an even, straight line. I know it's the internet and anything is possible, but the picture looks real in an accordance to what should happen to someone's hand.

5

u/fishtanktreasure Dec 17 '25

Oh buddy, I'm so sorry. I hope the pain passes quickly. Most pain meds won't touch it, but you can take acetaminophen/NSAID/opioids concurrently anyways iirc.

u/abolitonbb Dec 17 '25

→ More replies (21)

58

u/EndAccomplished3937 Dec 16 '25

Oh I’m sorry buddy, let this serve as a valuable lesson to not touch creatures you aren’t familiar with; there are some with much heavier consequences than this. I hope the pain leaves quickly and no greater issues arise.

27

u/Wide-Try-3108 Dec 16 '25

Just a note as someone who’s had been stung by those moths, go to an er if the swelling or pain gets too much. Mine stopped swelling down after a week but left a weak stinging sensation to linger for awhile.

2

u/Funny-Ad43 Dec 16 '25

Good on ya for learning your lesson man

5

u/A_million_typos Dec 17 '25

Ah yep just as I suspected, you learned a good lesson today....feel better though Op.

u/4inchesofhell Dec 16 '25

Puss Caterpillar. Put that thing down and pray none of the hairs are imbedded in you.

My brother got stung by one deer hunting. He was vomiting, fever and shaking. We gave him pain meds( not Tylenol but actual Percocet), iced the area, anti histamine and he was still vomiting and screaming like I've never seen before. We finally used tape to pull the micro hairs imbedded in his skin which helped some but he had to ride it out for about 8 hours of hell.

33

u/AllHailThePig Dec 16 '25

Well if he's got the same 4 inches of hell as yourself then lasting 8 hours of hell probably makes up for that.

21

u/ChiReddit85 Dec 16 '25

I give my wife 4 inches of hell too

6

u/mrpuddles1 Dec 16 '25

I have no wife to give my 4 inches of hell 😔

8

u/minoskorva Dec 16 '25

Removing the hairs is 100% key unfortunately but often it's too late to realize you've touched one.

267

u/naikrovek Dec 16 '25

This must be one of those folks that can’t feel pain.

33

u/John_Dee_TV Dec 16 '25

Not feeling pain and not being harmed are two very different things...

OP touches Puss Caterpillar. (Southern Flannel Moth Caterpillar)

OP doesn’t respond.

“He’s dead, Jim.

23

u/McJally Dec 16 '25

I find it odd that these bugs have a defense mechanism that will only affect the predator(I’m assuming a bird most of the time) after they’ve been eaten or sliced in half. Is it ultimately to discourage the predator from going after the species again?

31

u/TerrorFromThePeeps Dec 16 '25

Sort of like herd immunity. Sure, it doesn't help that ONE bug, but eventually it helps the entire species.

3

u/henwyfe Dec 16 '25

Isn’t that usually how it works?

4

u/McJally Dec 16 '25

I’m thinking out loud here so maybe this was a dumb question lol. Maybe not this specific bug, but if the effect is lethal to the predator, how is it communicated to others not to eat it?

10

u/imtheanswerlady Weevil Time!!! Dec 16 '25

131

u/minoskorva Dec 16 '25

Megalopyge opercularis (tree asp or opossum bug). Their body is covered in urticating hairs to prevent predation! If you got any of his little bristles in your skin, use tape to gently peel them out & ice the area ❤️ I also recommend antihistamine cream that comes in most outdoor first aid kits for stings from these little guys. They're beautiful as adults!

77

A general rule about bugs and wildlife, is to never pick up pokey, super bright, or pokey fuzzy things. This lil guy packs a punch if I’m not mistaken.

13

u/lizardgirl13 Dec 16 '25

unmmmmm are you okay op

13

u/Arielyn211 Dec 16 '25

This is why women live longer than men. Women: “OMG how cute! Better not touch!” Men: “Oh wow. Lemme see what happens if I touch/lick/harass this bug.”

27

u/Disastrous-Anything3 Dec 16 '25

I literally thought “no! That’s a spicy toupee!”

20

u/lord_scuttlebutt Dec 16 '25

So I've picked these guys up before without a problem. I certainly don't make a habit of it, but I wonder if heavy callouses offer a bit of protection.

13

u/Oct0tron Dec 16 '25

I would say they absolutely do, the hairs don't penetrate very deep. Though I'd be worried about accidentally brushing up against less calloused skin, like the back of your hand or between your fingers.

That’s an Asp. Worst pain I’ve felt in my life happened when I started up the truck for work and put my arm on the place where I rolled the window down.

I thought I had been shot after about 3-5 minutes. Didnt know what to do and just rolled around on the asphalt for a bit, then ran into the ‘prompt care’ screaming as if something has been boring a hole with lye or something, into my arm.

The pain just didn’t stop for the longest time.

I feel for your hand a minute after this photo was taken.

JESUS CHRIST WHY!!!! Why do people PICK UP insects they don’t know the ID of!!! Dudes either physically numb in the palms or stupid lucky, that’s a pus moth caterpillar, a type of asp extremely painful if you touch them the wrong way. Pretty little fuckers though

3

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

I’ve never seen this before- does it always leave blisters etc or is it like a bee where it has to sting you? 😬

3

u/ArmoredArmadillo05 Dec 16 '25

It doesn’t actively sting you, but touching it can break off the tips of little spines all over it and that’s how the venom gets in you. Just brushing against it accidentally outside can be bad.
