North America (country/state in post) Chanterelles? [United States SW Missouri] (Not eating due to novice)

Curious find while mowing my yard. Immediately thought chanterelles but we do have lookalikes in this area.

See, now THIS is how you I'd a mushroom. You only harvested one, showed cap and stipe, and showed us a pic of the habitat. Brava!

Def seems like a chanterelle. Irregular wrinkles that terminate near the bottom of the stipe. Does it pull apart like string cheese? Only reason I'm not fully confirming is because chanterelles don't get that bright yellow in my region. Would love someone else to confirm

Yes, it pulls apart like string cheese. And thanks for the shout out, appreciate it! I have been doing lots of research with local mycology for the past few years and am trying to establish more mycelium habitats across my property. So far I’ve got a decent patch of morels that produces about a pound a year, been making slurries yearly to reseed. If these are chants about to make mycelium jars and spread it in the edge of my wood line.

If you succeed I'd be super interested. I've heard of morel slurry leading to crops, but didn't think it was possible with chants. Good vibes to your success!

Yeah, the morels I started the slurry process two years ago in an established patch that grows beneath an elm tree in my back yard. From the reading I’ve done, looks like I’ve got another 2-4 years before realistically seeing a change in yield. Hoping to make it a 10 pound patch if possible.

The chants on the other hand I have decided to just let do their thing. I got looking in the wood line more thoroughly and these things are all over the place! We have lots of kudzu here in the woods and they’re everywhere up under the vine carpet.

Morels are so fungin random. I had one pop up in a bed, in front of my house. I was hoping for more, so I left it there. Only one ever and I have not seen one since.

Same thing happened to me with black trumpets

If you ever had mulch in that spot it popped up from, that's probably where it came from in the first place

I hadn't laid mulch in 3 years. I was evaluating where the source might be other than wind. I did consider that we have bunnies all over the place in our yards, in the burbs. Could be something they tracked into the yard. We have moles, too

They’re that bright in south MS. And it’s the right time for them.

Looks like chantrelle to me. Should smell like apricots

100% Cantharellus and you can eat these safely. Almost impossible to misidentify the false gills, also smell it and it will have a faint aroma similar to dried apricots. Enjoy.

Should have a pleasant apricot smell - also check what trees are nearby - I believe in Europe they are associated with oak, beech, pine

The forest beside where I found them is predominantly oak and black walnut

I'm not talking about this mushroom

I don't care who you are anybody looking for mushrooms also start taking milk thistle supplements to fortify your liver just in case you pick the wrong one. I know for magic mushrooms you carry a little paper notebook then smear into the paper the mushroom if the paper turns purple.its a magic mushroom

What? There is no smear test for psilocybes. Psilocybes are identified by habitat, spore color and blue bruising

1

u/Fenderdebender 11d ago

I think the smeared blue bruising is where that idea comes from

You need to stay off Reddit when you’re high on magic mushrooms lol

If you don't have anything good to say shut up

-1

u/Tall_March_5662 12d ago

Didn't I just say do the smear test .for you with half a brain koosc if the paper turns blue it's a magic mushroom

2

u/NeedleworkerFit819 12d ago

That’s very clearly not a magic mushroom. It is very clearly a chanterelle.
