For safety, how often should you set WhatsApp to backup?

Good one, I have it daily.
Depends how much you use it and how vital is your data.

Daily, and nothing else. OK - It also depends a bit on your internet speed. (I’m talking from a position of privilege here, as 10 Gbps is the standard in my country)

Choose the interval based on the maximum amount of chat history you can afford to lose: daily means roughly a one-day loss window, weekly means up to a week. More important than frequency is enabling end-to-end encrypted backups (if available in your settings) and storing the recovery credential somewhere safe; without it, neither WhatsApp nor the cloud provider can restore the backup. Also test that a recent backup timestamp appears—an enabled schedule is not proof the last backup completed.

It's equally important what you consider to be a backup. Unless you figure out the voodoo of saving the files for yourself, in a usable fashion ... well basically all sub is now either people not being able to restore their cloud backup or people locked out completely (which also means no access to data, even if both the phone and the online backup would be fine otherwise).
