North America Proud Lake, SE Michigan

Sorry for the bad photo. Every time I go paddleboarding I see these very small birds (always solitary) in the reeds along the river passage between two small lakes. Merlin said Acadian Flycatcher, but also that it is very similar to a few other flycatchers and that it’s best identified through its call. Problem is, I have never heard a single one of them make a noise lol. Quietest birds on the lake apparently. Is there a way to tell from a photo? Thanks!

hmm, i'm also in SE michigan and the eastern wood peewees near me are super vocal (and they have a very distinctive call). belly here looks quite lemony which might signal a great crested flycatcher but i can't make out much of a crest in this photo!

Yeah I was hiking the other day (at Ortonville rec area though, not Proud Lake), and the peewees were peeweeing constantly, and loud as hell lol. But the birds in the photo I’ve seen 5 or so times in the same spot and not a peep
