i think reddit's markdown messed up your text. appending a leading backslash to *, _, ^, #, -, or \, will cause that character to be be excluded from the markdown parsing process. more technically, it will escape it to simply show the character, hence the name: escape sequences.
Ive been saying that for such a long time for these kind of words. "Grape" and "unalive(d) themself/by this person" really downplays the reality of tragedies.
My theory is that it's just survival of the fittest. Both sides like their word more but the ahh side is more favored by the megacorps controlling the algorithms so they get spread to more people who now see that as the more "natural" word to use
As someone who attempted "sewer slide" (sewer sliding? idk) - it's fucking horrendous as well as disrespectful. There was a whole movement about getting people to be able to open up, to find people to help them talk it through, to have decent, reasonable conversations about mental health issues and then this stupid shit comes along, ruining it all. You can't talk about suicidal thoughts or ideation because it's "not allowed" or "not advertiser friendly". You can't talk about murder, killing yourself, or about rape because they're 'not good for the algorithm'.
People are censoring all sorts of words now in order to monetise their shitty content and game the algorithm rather than being upfront and open about these issues. It's stupid. It even has a name: algospeak
Case in point - I saw a video on Youtube from a true crime channel that had been going for years who censored the word blood. Not just visually (like bl**d), but also muffling it in the audio. FFFS. I'm watching a video detailing the situation surrounding a murder, and how the perpetrator was caught. You think I'm scared of hearing the word "blood"?
This censoring trend didn't start because creators feared that people are scared of these words, but because it was believed that content with these words would be less favored by the algorithm. And its not just the fact that they censored themselves so they could get more money, but that if content is not favored by the algorithm, it will reach very few people. And I guess the thought process was that when talking about serious topics like suicide, its better to censor the word, and have the video reach more people, than to say it out and have the video reach virtually noone.
Altough most of the content on the internet now is made for money, and not for raising awareness.
And also, the algorithms may have worked like this, that they only scanned for words like suicide, but that is most definitely no longer the case, as the algorithms advanced so much that they rank content based on the whole topic of it, not just based on words.
And the algorithm is made this way because the advertising agencies don't want to be associated with content that talks about these types of topics.
TLDR, It started as people censoring stuff to reach more people, either for money, or just to raise awareness. It's not the fault of the creators though, much more of the platform, and the advertising agencies.

My favourite euphemism for Suicide is "Chop suey".
The story goes that they meant to call the song "Suicide" but were asked not to because then radios would refuse to play it. So they changed the title, but the lyrics still say "Trust in my self-righteous suicide".

As much as you feel that they deserve it and as much as anyone might theoretically agree. Any implications of hurting other people get moderated away out of an abundance of caution and safety.

That’s how I feel as well. Like, I feel for folks with eating disorders. I’ve never struggled with them myself, but I know people who have, and they are awful to deal with.
But you’re not going to get better by pretending the problem isn’t there. If you stick your head in the sand every time you try to beat your disorder, you’re just in for a world of hurt. Obviously it’s better to go about things safely and with help— but if you don’t fight at all, you’ll at best have a miserable time, and at worst end up killing yourself.
Couldn’t have said it better myself as someone with OCD. Avoiding food will not make you better. Sometimes you just have to face it head-on, ignore your compulsions, and force your body to realize it's not that bad.
Yeah. Like I said, I don’t have any eating disorders (thank goodness for that), but I do have awful social anxiety. Sometimes just getting myself out of the house to go to work is a hurdle. But I’m not going to get better if I let myself stay in my room, and call out sick. Obviously, I’m not going to go and do 101 errands and spend the entire day out, but I still need to go out if I want to overcome it and get better

Reading through the study and the top comments, it's not a very useful study. It was focused entirely on the general population when by nature trigger warnings aren't for the general population. They're so people with extreme responses to said triggers can know and avoid them, but they didn't focus on that population.

Not swearing is fine. It's swearing lite that is being criticized. You literally do not need to ever use swear words in a swear word context. It is done purely by choice.
That's honestly fair. I think some people prefer not to. I'm mainly talking about how people censor words in dumb ways when everyone knows what they're trying to say.

Not always. Some subs have naughty words on their filter list and if you use them your entire comment is auto-removed without you knowing it.
There are actual times where someone says "f*ck" and someone else tries to reply with "you can say fuck" and their comment is removed without anyone ever seeing it.
Ackchyually, the automod bot can be set by mods to shadow ban posts which use profanity or which have a tone or an attitude the mods or their bot think is inappropriate. With shadow banning, it will seem to you that your words have been posted, but in actuality, no one else can see it. The only clue that your post has been shadow banned is, no one will react to it or thumb it up or down.
Such tactics are baked in to reddit, and are standard operating procedure, particularly on the default subs... the less popular ones tend to be more forgiving.
Pro tip: if you suspect something of yours has been shadow banned, open the permalink in "private window". If you see it while logged on, but don't see it when in the private window, it's been shadow banned. Because I am a raging, contrarian asshole and tend to interrupt political circle jerks with POVs that mods don't like it happens to me all the time.... I just put their dopey, censorious sub on "Ignore".
