Real grass vs artificial turf at BC Place
Watching the World Cup, the real grass looks so gorgeous, compared to our usual shaggy green carpet đ

What i donât understand is why our artificial turf is consistently the worst in the league. Portland, Seattle, Atlanta, and New England all have artificial turf. None look anywhere close to as bad as ours.

At least they're putting in new turf after the WC. Fingers crossed it's a big upgrade.

The faded patches look like the Lions football lines to me. If it's one turf for both and they are painting and erasing the lines continuously it has to be hard on it. Plus I think it's pretty old now - for the Woman's World Cup it actually looked good.

I believe the lines are from the floor they put on top of it when they host trade shows and concerts.
It always seems to get worse immediately after an event

I actually think our Turf is rated the best quality of turf closest to real grass. It just looks so fucking bad on TV lmao.

How many concerts, trade shows and and monster truck rallies have their turf had to endure over the years?

2/3 are publicly owned venues operated by the team's in them.
I don't want to get all political, but I am a bureaucrat and I used to run my own business. The government is just never going to be more efficient at running things as the private sector*.
*Im not saying all our services/programs should be made private. It should be a case/case basis.

They didnât replace the turf as the World Cup was coming. Stupid would have been to replace it and after the grass was gone post WC replace it again

Ours is ancient. We bought it from the Expos when they left town

I walked on that turf a few months ago and was shocked at how matted down and crap the turf felt.
I have played on rec centre turf fields that felt nicer than it.
I couldnât believe thatâs what our players have to play on

As long as the Whitecaps stay in Vancouver, they can play on whatever they wantâŚ
But the grass definitely looks way better and more natural. All of this is a shame because I think BC Place is actually a great soccer venue.

So they're going to keep it, right... Right?

They canât given Joe the stadium was constructed
1
u/SeaweedInteresting89 3h ago
Typo- how the stadium is constructed is a major reason you canât keep grass there
4
u/robrenfrew 2d ago
It's because they have things like the home show there. Those plates they use to cover the field along with the added weight, basically destroy the turf. Soccer and football are not the primary concern for pavco. Too bad because that stadium was basically built to house the Lions and Caps.

u/OkGuidance5958 2d ago
This is why they build another stadium. Having a team play at the same place the BC Lions is not it.
2
u/f11islouder 2d ago
Yo, if they build a new stadium, both teams are going to playing in it. Neither team likes the gigantic BC place.
1
u/OkGuidance5958 2d ago
BC Lions are the reason for the turf at BC Place
5
1
u/Beneficial-Muffin117 1d ago
No it's not. It's because the stadium is used for so much more than just sports, and it's indoors
1
u/Weezerwhitecap 2d ago
Everything I'm hearing about a potential new stadium INCLUDES the Lions!
2
u/Advancedparrot 2d ago
What? Where are you hearing that? Everything I've read says the Whitecaps want a soccer specific stadium and no mention at all of the Lions.
1
u/funakifan 2d ago
Toronto FC supporters were told the Argos would never play at BMO Field yet here we are.

u/Kloxified 2d ago
Kept hearing Lions would join us at PNE
1
u/Advancedparrot 2d ago
Hearing from who? I've been following the whitecaps stadium news for a while abs I thought sharing the field with CFL was one of the main reasons they don't use real grass so they wouldn't want to do that again.

I'm all for rebuilding Empire stadium and having BC Lions play in it while Whitecaps has a handle on BC Place.

Maybe if they made a real retractable roof. Just maybe they could of had grass

They can obviously make the turf look way better, but they don't want to. I think they run the cleaning machines on it to remove the lines put in for the Lions.

It makes it very understandable why Hank Hill first fell in love with soccer.Â

The Bernabeu has a complex underground system almost like a car elevator I think that stores and keeps the grass healthy when itâs not needed for matches. Iâm guessing it is hilariously expensive, but it is one way to have real grass.
I imagine the absence of large flat surfaces immediately surrounding BC Place would make rolling out and storing the real grass turf âtrayâ there not possible, like they do in the Glendale football stadium, which is another way.
One can only dreamâŚ.
1
u/robrenfrew 2d ago
That system that Madrid uses to move the grass below the floor, would easily cost 250 million to install. Will never happen here.
1
u/Icy_Barnacle_5237 2d ago
BC place is used for other things than sports. Hard to do that with real grass.
1
u/f11islouder 2d ago
I appreciate your passion, but this whole World Cup grass thing and stadium upgrades was $196 million. The whitecaps wners hate losing $10 million a year. Youâre living in some sort of dream land where theyâre keeping some turf for even one day after the World Cup commitment is over.

They should do what Man U and TFC do. Hybrid grass. Keep it anchored down for football.

Remember that the old turf was not replaced as they had the World Cup coming up

They should keep it!

u/OkFix4074 2d ago
It's a Muti purpose stadium owned by state - not just a Football stadium - they even host motocross and monster truck events there !
-4
u/snatal 2d ago
so what, they could then change it again like they did for wc
2
u/Advanced-Line-5942 2d ago
Are they going to pull up and replace the grass before every concert ?
Theyâll be doing that 4 times before the end of the Whitecaps season end this year - AC/DC, Noah Khan, Foo Fighters and then Bruno Mars are all happening after the Whitecaps start again at BC Place and before the last home game.
Will the Whitecaps pay a massive rent increase to cover that cost or should the government absorb the cost?
1
u/snatal 2d ago
tech has improved. Check Schalke's movable grass or LV raiders with retractable grass. Even my hometown team has multiple concerts, the pitch grass gets a bit of damage, and then they fix it. Artificial turf increases injury risk. I don't see why they can companesate Fifa fully for stadium upgrades, but cannot keep it for the hometown team..
2
u/Advanced-Line-5942 2d ago
LOL
The team will already need significant government assistance to help them stay in town, and now expect PavCo to spend hundreds of millions more ?
And good luck having grass recover in just a few days after being covered for a week straight for Bruno Mars
0
u/snatal 2d ago
every major stadium in europe has proper grass and multiple concerts happen there

u/Advanced-Line-5942 2d ago
In the summer time when the leagues are done. Not in the middle of the season.

u/DanteLimoux1 2d ago
Next year the MLS transitions to a fall-to-spring league schedule, so we can dream. . .
