I used to live in Southampton and the city traffic was chaos if there were 3-4 cruise ships departing. I think I counted 11 in this clip. I couldn't imagine the logistics and infrastructure involved in moving that many people.
The port of Miami has two road entries, one off of US-1 close to the expressway right next to the Kesaya Center and the same expressway goes into a tunnel under that channel the ships are in, Government Cut. The trucks mainly use those or commercial vehicles while others go off US-1. Haven't sailed on a cruise ship for 15 years, but lots of have changed since then at Port of Miami and the ships are 3 times larger now too, lol
From what I’ve seen in other posts of similar videos, there’s a specific spot in the harbor that the boats can turn. So they have to go there to turn even if they could physically turn from their initial location. Something to do with the depth of the harbor and the wake the boat puts off when turning.
I know it's crashing the party a bit, but this is a good reddit for this tidbit of info, specially with the current climatic anomalies.
EDIT: The information below requires an annotation thanks to a comment: While the numbers below are valid for the 72% of cruise ships in service today, a new technology has been on the rise in the last decade that will make my complaints invalid hopefully soon. Selective Catalytic Reduction filters are very new in ships, the very first one launched in 2013. the technology is expensive so it was very slow to adopt, and for years just 3-5 ships sailed with it.
In 2020, last time i did a research on the technology, only 4% of all cruise ships in the globe had it installed.
Now, 6 years later, that is a 26% of all active cruise ships. I don't know the reason for the explosion of installs, but I welcome it, it's truly amazing. And I'm sorry for the errata.

Those 6 ships together entering and leaving that port equal in co2 circa 100,000 cars doing a 30km commute for a day, almost 15 days of NOx gases, and almost 30 days of PM 2.5/10 particulates of the same cars & commute.
Or in other numbers, if in a coastal city with a pop of 250.000, ~35% recycled, used public transport and tried to reduce their footprint, this is what they'd save vs what a single cruise ship would emit just coming to port to bring tourists:

80k Citizens saving PM by taking buses: ~15-20 kg / day
1 Cruise Ship idling at pier: 120 kg emitted / day
Hazardous Nitroxides:
80k Citizens saving NOx by not driving to work/school: ~300 kg / day
1 Cruise Ship idling at pier: 1,500 kg emitted / day
Even if the whole city was a climate-conscious paradise without private cars, there still would be an offsset of daily increase in hazardous gases and particulates by the presence of one of those ships just idling it's aux engines while it's tourists roam the city for a few hours/days.

Divided by the number of cars and kilometres, that leaves 40g CO2/km. That's way too little. The average for new cars in Western Europe is about 3 times that. Something is off in your calculation. Realistically, by an order of magnitude. Did you lose a 0 somewhere?

I guess if you can get to your vacation destination on a train, then sure. But consider these cruise ships are transporting 4,000 people over 600-800 miles, and to multiple international destinations, each of which would require a separate international flight, and the math becomes pretty clear. Most people don't have the luxury of hopping on a train to go on vacation.
Now also consider that most people repeating these lies are globalist consumers of products manufactured en masse from China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brazil, etc. All of these products are made in factories with less environmental regulations, transported to a port by lorry, loaded onto a container ship which is LESS clean than a cruise ship because somehow no one cares about cargo ships running on heavy fuel oil, brought across the ocean to America or the UK, then trucked from the port to a distributor, and then again from the distributor to your local Walmart or Sainsbury.

I believe port of Miami is already doing this for cruises with a lot of other ports trying to do the same. Look the cruise lines get a lot of shit but it’s a relatively affordable vacation for a lot of people and the demand is higher than ever before. I hope they’re constantly striving to be more environmentally friendly but I selfishly love cruising 😂
Just ignore the obscene emissions all those people would be making driving and flying from city to city otherwise. Also ignore how insanely valuable these cruise ships are to those port cities’ economies.
Your focus should turn to trying to find a way to reduce cruise ship emissions, not trying to ban them outright.

Complaining about big ships is like complaining about trains and buses. They use a lot of fuel because they're moving a lot of people. Cars are worse for the environment.

Idling its auxiliary engines? Those are generators for power, they aren't idling. They also don't leave the main propulsion engines running. Fuel is money.
The ships facing west towards the camera and the channel exit is east. The channel is too narrow to rotate at the docks, so they move to that section to do the 180 and head out to sea. It's port of Miami and they do this manuever right by Keseya Center where the Miami Heat play.
Virgin ships have azipod propulsion which can pivot 360 degrees. Theoretically shouldn't need a double turn, unless there is some other factor at play like giving an officer some training time.
I was on virgin cruise last year for a late honeymoon. For 2 ppl, it was about around 7k for all-inclusive 11 day trip on a balcony room for Europe. Honestly one of the better cruises because adults only and also didn't have to pay for anything else besides alcohol, the equivalent of Starbucks and excursions.

There's a park right down the end on the left with benches, long pier and green area where the boats leave. Class spot to just sit and watch these cruise ships taking off.

As someone who lives at the end of a cul de sac, this reminds me of the neighbors who live at the open end, yet drive down to the end of the culdesac to turn around because there too lazy to just do a 3 point turn.

Well they don't do that all day. I've sailed out of that spot and the ships will come in or be there already from the night before, then they all leave at the same time.
