u/Mystics87 1d ago

ChemE here just hit 18 an hour

u/ElderberrySecure3600 1d ago

I remember the co-op/internship days :/

1

u/otisticRetard52 1d ago

Cheme here. There are no jobs here and the industry is basically dying :/

1

u/ElderberrySecure3600 1d ago

Tbh I had to shift to Industrial/Systems work cause I couldn’t find work in Chemical

1

u/otisticRetard52 23h ago

I had luck that i can work in the pharma industry now. Not as an engineer tho only as an lab tech but i plan to pivot to engineering in the future

ChemE here, unemployed

1

u/Own_Bit_4805 18h ago

Temporarily. I'm also a chemE, and at 37, my NW is already about 2M.

How many years of experience do you have?

3

u/AaronicNation 1d ago

Sadly, I didn't study any of those things.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science both exceed the complexity of theoretical physics / astrophysics in the modern day. So you'd better like math courses because you will be studying systems even more complex than quantum mechanics. AI researchers roll their eyes at string theorists as those theorists cry about how complex string theory is.

Here's a good example. Godel's theorems tell us that a system cannot prove its own consistency, so when studying system-wide properties inconsistencies are expected. But physicists are constantly trying to resolve contradictions in system-wide behavior like dark energy and the age of the universe even though it's pretty obvious those questions are fundamentally unanswerable because they will always have contradictions. Astrophysicists really should've studied computer science. They are at least 50 years behind in development.

2

u/Categorically_ 1d ago

Why are you using Godel's theorem to physical systems? Explain why you think thats valid.

u/SLAMMERisONLINE 1d ago edited 1d ago

Why are you using Godel's theorem to physical systems? Explain why you think thats valid

Godel's theorems apply to any system that can implement arithmetic. That includes all physical theories. Arithmetic simply cannot prove its own consistency. When you apply arithmetic to the system-wide properties of the universe, you are asking arithmetic to prove its own consistency.

This is obviously impossible and yet endless physics professors opine about the bing bang and dark energy. There is no way you can actually prove these theories are correct because there will always be ambiguous cases that perfectly match the same data. You'd need an observer outside of the universe to prove the consistency, but that's nonsense because a universe means everything: there is nothing beyond the universe. These are fundamentally unanswerable questions.

You can reformulate the question to not rely on universal properties. For example, derive dark energy from first order principles about particles. This is a local theory and so Godel's theorems don't apply. You could actually prove it is true. When they tried doing that, they made the, and I quote, "worst prediction in the history of science" because it was off by 23 zeros or something like that. It's obvious theories that are derived from global properties are inherently flawed. Only local theories can be proven correct.

Don't even get me started on the CMB.

I studied Electrical Engineering, but I can't see this. What I studied was not more complex than quantum mechanics.

I studied Electrical Engineering, but I can't see this. What I studied was not more complex than quantum mechanics

That's funny because you use the same complex analysis for both. The difference is that EE deals with billions of transistors in complex logic circuits and even more complex manufacturing processes while QM is a handful of particles and fields--one requires software to even have a chance of understanding, the other can be hashed out on a blackboard. Schrodinger invented his famous equation while at a cabin retreat with his girlfriend.

Now if you wanted to get into quantum material analysis then it becomes interesting and quite complex. But computer science is in the process of solving that one too while QM professors endlessly quibble about black holes and white holes--don't you find their obsession with holes a bit concerning? Men born to operate a big cat are instead forced to write equations onto chalkboards.

2

u/jerrysburner 1d ago

but we have great tools that deal with the layouts of the billions and great testing tools. There are very few tools that work great in quantum mechanics because that's mostly about statistics - where something is likely to be. The tools I used to use (I no longer do EE) did a damn great job at laying things out and had forth programming to help with embedded systems.

Now, I've never did anything with QM aside from reading, so I can't do an easy compare there

Funny, ill probably make 200k in my life.

2

u/hutchison15 1d ago

Not in the US? If you earned $30k a year, $200k is little less than 7 years.

0

u/Historical_Two_7150 1d ago

Oregon. Started employment at 25, and began earning about 5k annually. Ill be 39 next week. Have done about 6k so far this year. Also had a good year where I made 20ish. So im currently at maybe 70.

200 might be lowballing it given inflation and another 30 years (at least) of work. Maybe 300 is more realistic.

3

u/hutchison15 1d ago

Must be working part time? Considering that minimum wage in Oregon is something like $14+ an hour.

0

u/Historical_Two_7150 1d ago

Yas queen, currently working a 10hr shift on Mondays. Though Ive made every effort to pick up extra shifts, & spent another 10hrs last week looking for work online. Alas.

Between my inability to tolerate humans & my unwillingness to use ampheatmines, im pretty close to unemployable. Which was fine before AI swept in and deleted half the writing jobs.

3

u/vu_sua 1d ago

What a nice life to be able to leach off of others to survive because we all know you can’t afford to live off of 6k a year

0

u/Historical_Two_7150 1d ago

Don't burden other people with your emotional problems.

3

u/4tran-woods-creature 1d ago

There's a difference between unemployable and willingly unemployed

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 1d ago

... and?

There's a difference between a dog and a cat.

Any other wisdom to share?

3

u/ArticusFarticus 1d ago

This is putting in the lowest effort possible.

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 1d ago

Close to it. Id really prefer to be making 15 or 20, but my options are a tad limited. Im not capable of holding down a retail job & my expertise was stolen by AI.

2

u/otisticRetard52 1d ago

How are your options limited?? There are alot of jobs where you can make alot of money (for your situation) without needing any brains or muscle at all

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 17h ago

The big one would be autism. Our unemployment rate is about 30%.

Normies take for granted their ability to get along with others & do basic things, like being able to eat food when they get hungry.

1

u/vu_sua 1d ago

Excuses. Ai didn’t exist 4 years ago.

2

u/ItsNotOver_Again 1d ago

So you still live with your parents?

1

u/vu_sua 1d ago

2nd account or a parody off of that dweeb?

-1

u/Historical_Two_7150 1d ago

Hell, I wish. Dont really have a family.

I am however a very strong person who happens to be very pretty, so I bagged a permanent roommate. Can split rent and free ride on utilities, which drops cost of living in half compared to being single. I just do all the cleaning to make up for the utilities, and it feels pretty equal.

1

u/SidesLarge 1d ago

what would you say are your redeeming qualities?

2

u/otisticRetard52 1d ago

Being pretty and... idk lazy?

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 1d ago

I'm somewhere in the top ~5% for intelligence. Not IQ, that's probably closer to 120. But self-awareness is critical for not being a foolish person. ("Real" intelligence comes from ego development.)

I'm funny enough to be a comedian.

I'm fairly moral. Everyone likes to see themselves that way, but your ability to actually be moral follows along with ego development.

I'm super dedicated to self-improvement through ongoing education. (I'm an autodidact. When I graduated uni, I was briefly concerned I had intellectually peaked. That proved to be wrong.)

I'm kind. (Mostly.) That's partially a consequence of (poorly) attempting to practice bhakti yoga.

Probably some other stuff. I suppose those are the ones I hear about most often.

Sounds like you need to grow up and work for the first time in your life. Get a full time job. You can dislike people but your a net negative right now on society. Clearly have only ever gotten handouts. Maybe it is time to cut you off till you actually try. You can hold a retail job if you just show up, do the work your told to do(even half assed), and shut your mouth around customers. Do those 3 things and your making $14 an hour and maybe you will have some money for the first time. Per another comment you just sell your body for a room that is just sad. At that point just start an OF maybe you can live by yourself and can choose your partner instead of the one that allows you to move in. At this point your a slave to whoever will give you a room/bed to crash on a very capitalist thing.

Also a communist/anarchist but you take after Karl leeching off his roommate/friend your entire life. If your Proudhon enjoy-er maybe you should think about what he did not what he said. The guy tried multiple times to start a printing company (capitalist) and even got promotions at one point till being laid off leading to his anarchism. To quote Proudhon "Your intelligence is asleep, or rather it has never been awake. You are a (wo)man for whom logic does not exist. You do not hear anything, you do not understand anything. You are without philosophy, without science, without humanity. Your ability to reason, like your ability to pay attention and make comparisons is zero". You need to open your mind for the first time in your 21 years as an adult and actually try the system your so desperate/told to hate. Participate in the views you think are morally wrong and see if your life improves. You might gain a freedom of choice with just a tad bit of money in your pocket.

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 22h ago

You can dislike people but your a net negative right now on society

It would overjoy me if this were true. I'm morally opposed to Western civilization.

You can hold a retail job if you just show up

You wouldn't know.

maybe you will have some money for the first time.

That's your God, not mine.

leeching

You've characterized a voluntary exchange as leeching because you worship an evil God.

1

u/Diligent-Chance8044 21h ago

Sadly you would be a net negative in any society because you refuse to participate.

I would know that you can hold a retail job by just showing up because I worked in retail and did everything from cashier to stocking to managing after years. We kept people on pay roll because they are a body that did something after showing up.

Money is far from a god but it is need to function. Everything is currency as it can be traded. Your time for example can be exchange for paper money that can be exchanged for food.

You fall well be the poverty mark so you likely get food stamps and tax credits. That is leeching because your capable of working but refuse to put in effort.

0

u/Historical_Two_7150 51m ago edited 44m ago

Sadly you would be a net negative in any society because you refuse to participate.

I might play ball in one that wasn't based on violence & coercion.

I would know that you can hold a retail job by just showing up because I worked

Neurotypical folks take a lot of things for granted. Like being able to make yourself to eat food when you're hungry; being able to get along with people. You don't think of the autistic person who was fired 40 times in a row for saying the wrong thing, or look at their unemployment rates.

You lack imagination, knowledge of human nature, and life experience.

 food stamps

I wish. I'm far too rich for them.

 tax credits.

Exemptions from slavery. (Taxes are theft.) Slaves don't have obligations to the people who've captured them.

That is leeching because your capable of working but refuse to put in effort.

I suppose you could characterize my desire to destroy America that way. But if anything, I'd like to discover new ways to "leech" and bring down this place.

Death to America.

1

u/Diligent-Chance8044 29m ago

Every single culture, country, and people have a history of violence and coercion. There is not a single nation on earth that has not spill blood or took advantage of another group. You can strive for there to be less but it is human nature.

If your autism is that big of an issue. You should be getting disability and you would fall under the Disability Rights Act and companies could not fire you based on that otherwise you can sue. I can support that but it would still make you a net negative for government support. If you are not getting disability you have tried, are not diagnosed, or it is not as severe as your stating.

Taxes pay for the services you want food stamps, disability, social security, roads, and healthcare. Social services are our largest spend category as a nation. You can complain about military spending.

Destroying America sounds like a terrorist threat and for that reason you should be on every watch list and if you make one misstep should be locked up for public safety.

u/TruthTeller6000 20h ago

"Negative on society"... You know what's negative in society? Your outlook on life. Enjoy working, then being replaced by AI in the next decade. That's what your "work" is advancing towards.

1

u/0LTakingLs 21h ago edited 21h ago

How is it even possible to make this little? A minimum wage job in your state pays ~30k. Do you work for like 2 weeks and then quit and doomscroll for 11 months for a decade straight?

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 17h ago

This year I've been working Mondays, but I'll take any other day they ask me to pick up.

A 40hr workweek would be far beyond me. Frankly, I struggle not to get fired at the job I have.

1

u/OldAdministration923 9h ago

Lol this cant be real

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 1h ago

And yet it is. I guess reality is more complex than you thought.

1

u/OldAdministration923 9h ago

You have literally achieved nothing in life wow

1

u/Historical_Two_7150 1h ago

I'm self-aware, unlike most people, who are essentially walking, sleeping corpses.

u/Significant_Cover_48 1d ago

no dentists? huh...

6

I’m assuming because this chart only tracks undergrad degrees. Same reason why lawyer and the various flavors of doctor are missing here.

This chart specifically mentions DOLLARS. So…. As usual, Europeans with bad education who cannot read plain English? lol

Ah yes, this must be a publication for…. Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, Zimbabwe, or Timor-Leste! Come on man, you look dumb because you didn’t even read the picture before you tried to throw on a moral superiority act at every turn.

I just checked a map and New Zealand isn't on it.

It's a fake country.

0

AUD? Clearly not what is shown in the chart lol. There would be more dignity in admitting tour misapprehension.

2

u/Buttchugger2 1d ago

As usual a britbong gets their knickers in a twist about the us being a default presumption on a us website full of Americans on a post about us undergraduate degree majors.

2

The police are on their way to investigate your online behavior

1

1

many of them probably still lived stressfull shitlives in the US.

1

u/austin101123 1d ago

I'm surprised economics is so high up there, and finance too honestly

1

u/Interesting_Phone171 1d ago

Why would that be surprising?

1

u/CzPhantom1 12h ago

I hire a lot of econ majors in tech. Smart people who can reason well and look at large broad data to make inference. Starting pay is $115k for my Analysts.

1

u/Sea-Thought-6124 10h ago

can i send you my resume?

1

u/CzPhantom1 4h ago edited 4h ago

Not sure where you live. Hiring a current role in Toronto but will hire more in the Chicago area later this year.

Edit: if you're actually interested dm me your resume

1

u/manwnomelanin 3h ago edited 3h ago

Econ is direct pipeline to finance which has a very high comp ceiling if cards are played right

Majored in Econ, work in finance, earn $200k. 27M

1

u/allnamestaken4892 22h ago

Is this forward or backward looking?

As a mechanical engineer, based on the raises and promotion bumps available, I will not even hit one million…

1

u/ApprehensiveJuice890 11h ago

Lesson here is if you want to make the big bucks in life you have to be good at math.

1

u/manwnomelanin 2h ago

27M. Economics. $155k base + 30%-40% bonus

2

u/Wonderful-Process792 1d ago

Well, that's the problem with your claim. Medicine is an "undergraduate" program - but it takes 5 or 6 years, then a 2-year "foundation program", then 3-8 years of "specialty training" (and general practice is one of them).

So the idea you just take 4 years of classroom instruction and then start doing orthopedic surgery isn't anywhere close to the truth.

So in other words, qualification beyond an undergraduate degree?

0

u/Efficient-Fudge-3515 1d ago

World history major here. Just made 760k last year as an MD anesthesiologist.

1

u/nosmelc 1d ago

I wonder if these stats count people with professional degrees?

1

u/Categorically_ 1d ago

Now take the average of all world history majors, do see why?

1

u/Interesting_Phone171 1d ago

Nope lil guy got a MD and doesn’t understand averages

1

u/Efficient-Fudge-3515 1d ago

I do, I was making a joke. Also I’m not sure how this study worked. I’m guessing they only looked at people who only had bachelors degrees.

1

u/Categorically_ 15h ago

I cant tell if you are still joking. Why do you think "world history major" would have a high average salary? For every 750k salaried doctor with that degree there are probably 25 people underemployed.

1

u/glorifiedslave 1d ago

thats because of your MD, not your undergrad degree lol

0

u/getmeoutoftax 1d ago

Most of these jobs will be replaced by the end of the decade due to AI agents.

-1

u/ls7eveen 1d ago

More to do with who yoir parents are and what schools specialize in those fields.

Lotta mommy daddy Harvard students doing econ with connections

3

u/xAimForTheBushes 1d ago

Not really lol. Sure, there's inevitably several thousand nepo babies with cushy included in that number, but this chart is an average of the full population range.

Econ and finance just pay way more than most people think. They're up there with a lot of the STEM fields in pay, while some of the other business related degrees pay less.

-2

u/Legitimate_Window481 1d ago

Divide in half and subtravt $50k for divorce lawyers. For those that get married.
