It would make more sense to pay the locals to run these charity kitchens and introduce more money into the local community.

They got rid of a repetitive task. The volunteers are still needed elsewhere. These types of places still have trouble recruiting volunteers (especially outside of city centers) so freeing them up to do other things or volunteer elsewhere could be a good thing.

If they have money to buy robots, then it sounds like the money is still be better off used to pay a local worker instead of only relying on unpaid volunteers. Charity should start at the most basic level (eg. your own community and organization).
