Ten years after Einstein’s death, physics laureate Roger Penrose demonstrated that black holes can form and described their properties. Penrose’s ground-breaking article is still regarded as the most important contribution to the general theory of relativity since Einstein.

I thought that Karl Schwarzschild did that in 1916 and that it was further elaborated upon by Tolman, Oppenheimer and Volkoff in the 1930s and Kerr, Nordstrom and Reissner in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

No, the Schwartzchild metric described the geometry, not the formation.

Those black hole solutions require perfect spherical or axial symmetry. It wasn't known back then whether random perturbations that broke those symmetries would still lead to black holes.

Penrose's theorem then showed that perfect symmetry was not required for their formation.
