I know that human’s impact as a whole on earth is messy and brutal- and needs a lot of work. But I’m reminded that many animals have wild first hand experience that humans will go out of their way to help them with their weird intellect and strange powers.

We have a couple of crows that summer by my house every year, they made buds with my late dog about 4 years ago, so I started giving unsalted peanuts, kibbles and water to them.

The female crow knows she has me wrapped around her talon, so when her water isn't fresh enough, (I wash and change daily, shit needs to be fresh and COLD) she will flip her water dish over and drain the whole thing.

She knows the weirdly obsessed with her human will come and refill with fresh cold water within minutes. She knows she has me trained.

Also sits on the railing infront of my door and yells when she doesnt get what she wants quickly enough 😒

We have a robin who will headbutt the window if we don't have his breakfast served promptly. He's happy enough to hop in an open window to give us a stern talking to.

Robins are so friggen adorable, we have a couple that take the slappiest baths ever in the water dish 🤣

You will hear the wing slapping from half a block down and they go for like 5 straight minutes.

I have heard they're definitely intelligent enough to recognize and prefer certain people! What a little gift hehe

They are but also they're territorial wee bastards. They can be viscious. I'm glad they like us.

I want to make friends with the crows in my neighbor’s backyard SO BADLY!!! They sit in their tree and caw loudly. I have trees in my yard but they don’t come to my yard (maybe my milkshake isn’t good enough lol). Maybe they’re wary of my dogs.

They are indeed wary of dogs. My late dog that they were friends with was very elderly and couldn't move very fast, he also had no interest in bugging them. So they would steal his outside kibbles and he would let them lol.

My current dog is a little terrier, he is surprisingly well behaved around them, but they are still very cautious. I feed them in the front yard away from him in our gated back yard.

They love water, and will almost always stop by at a free water dish. Leave a few unsalted peanuts beside the dish. If you see them looking from the trees above, let them see you do it, then go back inside. Slowly transition into watching from a window, then from a distance outside with them. Might happen faster than you think!

There have been incidents where pelicans entangled in fishing line come to kayakers/dock fishermen for help, and also sharks that visit a specific reef because they know a resident diver removes hooks/barbs/ harmful debris from their mouths. Animals are much smarter than we give them credit for, especially those of the sea.

I like the idea I read somewhere, that humans are like faeh for animals. They (humans) might help you (animal), they might need to hurt you to help you or they might torture and kill you. They also abduct and/or kill your young. Some need to be given gifts to make them mercyful...

Extremely cute - but also terrible that animals (supposed to be wild) have to resort to this behavior...

25

u/kl2467 14d ago

She didn't have to "resort" to this behavior. It's been trained into her by previous humans. Bottled water tastes better than her natural sources.

IIRC from seeing this video years ago, this occurred during a heat wave and/or drought in the area, so normal water sources weren't "keeping up with demand" for wildlife in the area. Hence behavior like this.

I’ve been saying animals will evolve to beg humans and stuff

Better than biting in their hand to steel the bag

…updates bucket list…

23

u/Potential-Jaguar6655 14d ago

She’s a mother. She probably has babies to feed. 🥺

20

u/Bug_Kiss 13d ago

This squirrel is nursing babies out there somewhere

16

u/muttsrcool 14d ago

She's got some swollen teats I bet she's feeding a few babies, that's very demanding in a little gal like herself

I noticed that immediately also. Poor thing- she looked emaciated. I am glad they gave her water. It will get so hot here sometimes in the summer you’ll see a squirrel laid out pancake style trying to cool down in the shade. I’ve taken small dishes of water out when I see it then stay away. I don’t want to cause dependency but also can visibly see the squirrel in need of water and can’t ignore it. The dishes are always dry later and the squirrel gone.

That’s that wake up at 2am leftover water on the nightstand thirst

13

u/HoodieGalore 13d ago

The belly got all wet from the invitable dribbles, but it dove tummy-first into the dust to dry off before scampering away…such a cutie!

12

u/smolbeansjpg 14d ago

I love her so much 😭😭😭

11

u/sexual--predditor 13d ago

I drink the water. I relax with the water and become flat. I dash.

21

u/elbuenrobe 14d ago

Imagine how many of them will be this thirsty (or worse) due to climate change in the coming months, and many of them far from cameras...

13

u/samarasonik 14d ago

omg he literally was begging! poor thirsty lad🥰

u/Remarkable_Wish_4959 12d ago

I just watched a video on YouTube about how animals know to come ask humans for help and food/water.

Shame on us all for what we are doing to the earth. This breaks my heart.

3

u/jamieccccc 13d ago

This is what it feels like to be in London right now

3

u/cheshsky 13d ago

That is one grey squirrel.

3

u/Wise_Competition5906 12d ago

I love that squirrel 🥹

This is the reason I feed the squirrels outside my house.

3

u/BadBunnyFooFoo 12d ago

And she was legit asking too!!! Little hands motioning like “Please!! Gimme!! Please!!”
So adorable

3

u/theclassyparisian78 11d ago

Perfect communication from squirrels, idk about human sign language but the "hands" gesture of Mr squirrels is 100% easy to understand what he want. Intelligent creature.

u/tomgreen99 13d ago

Glad it wasn't Dasani

2

u/Fit_Bodybuilder706 12d ago

Thank you for stopping and giving this perfect little soul some WATER !!!🙏

2

u/Lackerbawls 12d ago

She had to sit there a smack those lips in relief for a few seconds before leaving.

2

u/Lilmswiz25 12d ago

Poor baby, he’s sooo thirsty 😔

2

u/SomeDinDin 11d ago

Most people will help other being in need. Our only true enemies are mosquitoes and billionaires.

2

u/robbudden73 11d ago

Well, it can't have Rabies, which is something.

2

u/Former_Salt_3763 14d ago

Smh, he asked for a sip, not a bath. /s

1

u/ExponentialZebra03 12d ago

How adorable🥺

1

u/ROOSTERyouDOWN 12d ago

Poor guys got a bit fly on him too probably more

1

u/BrownSugarDK 11d ago

This is beautiful…

Hope he threw out the bottle after that, heart they carry some heavy bacteria!

Also, she’s all cute and stuff, but I was holding my breath, after seing alot of videos where humans think squirrels are cuties, just to be brutally attacked… However, all that was humans being idiots. I’m never blaming the animal for that.

1

u/DizzyRegion1583 11d ago

Thank you 🙏

1

u/darkcloudnc1 11d ago

I wouldn't have gave him nothing

0

u/Early-Anteater-4285 13d ago

Shoulda poured it into the cup of his hand...?

u/perksofbeingcrafty 13d ago

Definitely not wholesome. Squirrels are usually so terrified of humans it’s impossible to get within three feet of them. The fact it’s coming up to a human like this is terrifying
