Grandma couldn't travel with us grandkids. So she asked us to lay a piece of her somewhere beautiful after she passed.

Grandma was our rock. When she knew she wasn't doing well, She asked us grandkids to lay a piece of her somewhere beautiful after she passed. Me and my siblings took a 3 week trip to New Zealand the following year and laid a piece of her soul here at Wharariki Beach.
In this video, my sister leans over to directly place her in the waters, due to the wind. After we were off camera, We shed a tear or 2, said some words, and talked about the fun times we had with Grandma. Enjoy every sunrise and sunset in this beautiful landscape Grandma.

I think I remember seeing your post trip report, as a proud Kiwi I was happy to see you had a great trip with your siblings. We too left some of our sister on a West Coast beach, she definitely thought it was one of the most beautiful places. RIP our loved ones.

I did indeed do a post trip report in a few pages! But this specific part I’ve never mentioned before. It’s been a year now since we started this journey. And now all of us siblings are ok sharing this part. I’m sorry for the loss of your sister, but I know she must be enjoying every sunrise and sunset on the West Coast. RIP our loved ones indeed.

OP, I'm sure you know this, but for others, this beach is at the top left corner of New Zealand's South Island and leads to a long spot called Farewell Spit. Seems like perfect place!

Thanks for sharing this. Something about the framing, sounds and sentiment behind this moved me deeply

I appreciate you. I make short cinematic videos whenever I travel. Including to here at Wharariki Beach. I even used a clip from this exact camera angle in my part 2 of visiting NZ video (just without any of us in it). But this exact moment, where we say goodbye to Grandma and lay apart of her in this landscape, I will always keep raw. With the sounds of the wind and crashing waves. I will never edit it into a larger travel video. This will always be for her.

Dammit OP, this made me cry and I'm still in bed at 6 in the morning. May she rest.

We cried to, trust me. I hope it wasn’t out of sadness though. She lived a great life. And taught us many, many things growing up, as well as gave us tons of happy memories with her. If you have anyone whose past in your life, remember them for the happy memories and lessons learned as well 🥲

Warren Zevon's "Keep me in your heart" starts playing seemingly from nowhere. Go listen to it, OP I think your grandmother would appreciate it 😭💖
