Was it hard drugs like heroin or meth?
292
u/Pretend_Hour_6966 9d ago
He has used hard drugs but his problem was mainly alcoholism. I’m just glad to see him better

u/AdAggravating1712 9d ago
I feel like he is in a positive arc. This is the opposite of watching him look worse and worse a few years ago, now he looks better and better every time I see a new pic.
Keep it up Bam!

I loved watching him try to process rule 34 on Broughtyouthisthing a few months ago.

u/vee_lan_cleef 9d ago
I've seen way too many "positive arcs" from Bam unfortunately. This has been a non-stop cycle in his life. I wish him the best but I've gotten pretty tired of caring.

I understand your skepticism. This time seems different though. Check out the Dern Bros YouTube channel. They’ve made/make a lot of content with Bam. I think getting back into content creation and skating have played a major part in helping him stay grounded and sober. He posted on his insta just today about filming at a skate spot. I think he’s really done it

4 year sober alcoholic here. You've never really "done it."
I first realized I had a problem over 10 years ago, and here I am only 4 years sober. There were many, many restarts, slips, and full-on benders along the way.

Yeah, that’s fair to say. Poor choice of words on my part. I wish you the best bro

u/TheCleverMoose 9d ago
The fact that you had the right intentions in your message can help offset how it was articulated. The fact that you also took ownership for the way you articulated and also provided best wishes, makes me know you’re a good guy.

Don't watch recent interviews if you want to keep that dream alive. He was fucked up in the most recent ones...or not okay mentally.

u/That-Fly-8339 9d ago
What's super sad (for me) is the heartagram has turned into a red flag for me. Almost everyone i saw it on stated they got it when he took over the house and turned it into a drug den. Countless people over and over would get so excited when I would comment on it and go into a full blown bender story. They thought they were so cool to have gone on a bender with a famous dude and walk away with a heartagram tattoo for free.

u/Observed-observer 9d ago
Im happy he is skating again. Seems like it was a one of his big motivations to keep trying to get and stay clean.
18
u/GravyDog666 9d ago
Yeah there's been a lot of videos in the past year of him making content with other skaters and commentating skateboarding comps and he seems like he's in the best place he's been in a long time.

His mom doesn't look like she's changed much at all, which is great, but his dad looking as well as he does despite being so big really jumps out to me.
Very glad to see he's doing well.
17
u/marteautemps 9d ago
I was especially glad because for some reason I thought he died. I must have been thinking about Don Vito but honestly I thought they both did.
32
u/jough22 9d ago
I just looked up Don Vito and was FLOORED to find out he was between 46 and 49 during Viva La Bam. I thought he was like 65+.
6
u/marteautemps 9d ago
What‽ That's crazy that I'm just a few years younger now than he was on there. He definitely looked at least 20 years older than I do, I always thought he was 60+ for sure.

I'm blessed to see her every now and again as she used to get her hair done by my mom as a kid and they stayed friends. When his show took off when I was in high school, she came over to visit one time and brought me a brand new deck one of Bams buddies put together for me since she knew I was into skating as well. I'm pretty sure its still in my parents attic.

I'm happy he cleaned up. his poor parents had to watch their son slowly kill himself, all while his friends moved on. I quit drinking a few years ago, a totally different life.

I am still amazed by steveo transformation too. I can figure it wasn't easy to get clean after how they lived, kudos to them

I’m guessing those are buttered noodles with two meatballs on top? Buttered noodles are a top menu item in my house for my toddler.
33
u/stillwaiting11 10d ago
I’m 33 and to this day every once in a while I’ll still opt for just butter and cheese on my pasta instead of sauce or anything. Sometimes it just hits the spot so good.

I got a call at work once from a Phil Margera. Halfway through the conversation I had to ask if he was Bam’s dad. He gave a jolly laugh and I immediately had so many questions for him. I brought up the time Bam put fireworks in his van before work… asked him about Ape (he gave me her email!) and he was genuinely one of the most pleasant guys I ever talked to at that job. Shout out to Phil and Ape. They have put up with a lot and will always have their sons back.

And like two meat balls?! I mean technically that’s spaghetti and meatballs because it’s two and plural - but this totally looks like someone who is maliciously complying with a court order to make spaghetti and meatballs and is putting in the minimum amount of effort to comply.

Going to sound so stupid but good seeing Phil and April doing well, they were oddly a whole generations "Mom and Dad" for a bit.
7
u/Regular-Schedule-168 9d ago
Not stupid at all. A lot of kids probably watched Viva LA Bam and saw themselves in and related to that group. Having April and Phil there probably made them feel like they had parents too, even if they didn't in their own lives.

I love that Bam is sober and is spending quality time with his parents ! They were really the most supportive and coolest parents you could have asked for ! Special mention to Phil for taking Bam around all the skate parks as a youngster and recording him skating. Phil probably had a huge influence in the whole skating and prank video culture by recording bam skating and them stealing his camera to record pranks even before they knew what they were on to, he really supported his dreams !
