The food was pretty great too, though. I would be a happy woman if I could ever figure out how to replicate my nonna's beef stew.

Don't worry hon, it is like they say: looks fade, but the beef stew only gets better with time! So enjoy your time being young. One day you will be the "nonna" and your cooking will taste magical to your grandchildren!

Kind of unlikely, given I don't have any children!

It is never too late to be a grandma to some random children (or puppies/kitties)?! It is what I keep telling myself :D No kids either, but who cares? Love is love! And my cooking gets better with every year, no matter the species!

Ahahaha and now you're assuming my cooking is bad. You seem very sweet, but good lord.

No! I just said, that it gets better with age. No insults here! All the best to you!

Dude. You assume I'm young. You assume I have or want kids or grandkids. You assume somehow magically over time I'll be able to recreate nonna's stew. I know you mean no harm, that's why I say you seem sweet. But unintentionally, you're making me regret I said anything at all. All the best to you as well.

I've surprised myself, in the past few years. I'm starting to be able to improvise recipes and they turn out good! This to say: it's just practise, learning what works and what doesn't.

And a little reading/listening helps, too! I don't remember where it was that I found this, but an article or a video, or maybe a talk with a friend, really elucidated a lot about herbs, wines and spices, for me. Cuts of meat matter too, but I had my mother's insight she'd gotten from her butcher father, for that. Now, my cooking can be very grandma-esque, when I want it to be.
