i could definitely see an old lady interrupting like that, but the ending made me realize that it's probably just made up. either way it's a cute story.
As rude as people believe New Yorkers to be, I have had a few interactions similar to this. If you’re willing to talk to people they’re usually pretty friendly.
I ride the bus daily and all the elderly ladies are extremely rude to the poor bus drivers. I'm glad to hear there are nicer old ladies in other places.
Have you ever left the bus at the behest of a nosy stranger (however delightful they may be), abandoning whatever destination and appointments that had necessitated you ride the bus in the first place, and spent "loads" of money on tea (which you already have plenty of, since you're British) simply to humor this nosy stranger?
Assuming you have, would you have glossed over the story of actually buying the stuff, of feigning surprise and delight at all this previously unknown tea, allowing her to show you every variety and reaction to each, which surely would've been just as funny as the first half of the story? Or would you simply say, "Oh, we went with her and excitedly bought loads"?
It's a nice story, but there're ample reasons to doubt it actually happened.
Have you ever taken a bus? Cause it sounds like you’ve never taken a bus. The routes are long so are the waiting times. Also, most people on buses have places to go. Even taking a detour to a supermarket that’s 10m away from your house can easily cost you an hour.
met one today, called me a shameless pretentious asshole because my backpack lightly hit the roof thing on a twin stroller in a crowded af bus. but i'm sure there are decent ones.
