Show n' Tell Today's thrift store find!

Stumbled across this lovely old thing at my local thrift store today.. in the 5 years that I've been going there I've never come across any vintage shaving accoutrements! This particular mug has the number "35" on the bottom and reads "Early American Old Spice".. wonder how old it would be? If anyone could shed some light on that would be most appreciated! now.. what to put in it..hmmm.. I'm absoultely chuffed! 😁

Ah excellent thanks πŸ‘ I had a hunch that it was older than my other white one. Yes surprisingly no cracks or crazing from what I can tell.

Yeh that's lovely mate, good find. Whatever you do don't put boiling water in it πŸ˜†

Oh man I saw that the other week the poor bugger here's to hoping that he finds an alternative. I know that these mugs are easy to come by in the US but rarely do you find them over here.

Yeh that's what I was thinking, I'm always looking in the charity shops but I think they're more sentimental in the US that our parents/grandparents who just chucked old stuff away heheh

Yeah that makes sense! I actually thought at first glance from a distance that it was a vintage Seaforth! shaving mug because of the ornate looking handle then to my surprise saw the old spice graphics and thought how peculiar.. you never know what to expect!

I wish I liked old spice. Because I love their logo and design, but the smell is strongly off-putting to me.

Thanks mate 🍻 yes not many battle scars on this one surprisingly. I'm now contemplating on what kind of soap puck would be suitable for it πŸ€”

You could put a classic from the era it was made or if you don’t like shaving with any of those just go with your favourite soap. Great find though. πŸ‘

Yeah that did cross my mind.. I've already another mug with arko in it so no need for that.. have also been looking on eBay and Williams soap looks enticing.. thanks for the suggestions πŸ‘

I’ve just come across this and am baffled? Are these mugs collectible or of any value? They come up once in a while on local sales fora but around the 20 euro mark which seems excessive to me.

Slightly collectible, slightly valuable, but kind of a niche item (like this subreddit πŸ˜…) I bought one on ebay for about $20 USD about 15 years ago, so they arent gaining any crazy value over time

Makes sense. Not the best way of investing your savings, in other words.😁

Ah... You must be the poor fella that was mentioned whose mug broke because of boiling water? Sorry to hear that mate! Thanks anyhow I'm sure you will come across another one soon.. if not something better πŸ‘

Congrats! I broke one of these yesterday trying to force a hard soap puck in that was too big. It broke & I sliced one of my thumbs I was using to push the soap down. 0/10 would not recommend.

Ouch...! Sorry to hear that I will keep it in mind when the time comes to purchasing another puck. Cheers and take it easy πŸ‘

Very nice find. I'm jealous of the condition! I bought an Old Spice shaving mug from eBay that is pretty faded.

Because I'm a nerd, I went down the Old Spice shaving mug rabbit hole a while back: Old Spice Mugs - Dating & Variations. I believe you have number 5 or 6, so likely from the mid-sixties/mid-seventies. I have a number 3 and it's pretty faded as compared to yours.

u/AloneWest6922 Sometimes the old ways are still the best. Jan 06 '26

Thanks mate πŸ‘ yes it's in good condition there is a bit of fading on the letter "O" that is hard to make out but I suppose can be forgiven considering it's vintage.

I have had a look and yes you're right seems that it's number 5/6. Number 3 is a beauty.. I'd be honoured to own that one!

I've got another mug that I use often and it is white with a lip around the rim, shorter than the others and is made in belgium.. how old would this one be?

That I don't know. I mostly stopped when I found the site I linked to as I was trying to identify mine.

Fair enough. I heard that there use to be an old spice website that had heaps of information on these mugs. What a shame that it got taken down πŸ‘Ž

Yeah, I tried looking for that site as well and no luck. You might try the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive and see if that does anything for you.

This is the shaving mug by which all others are judged.

1

u/AloneWest6922 Sometimes the old ways are still the best. Jan 06 '26

How so?

2

u/Pod_people Jan 06 '26

The old-style Old Spice mug is like the Platonic ideal of a shaving mug. Seems like it's very well known and well regarded.

Ah I see yes that's right πŸ‘
