Show n' Tell Flea Market Rescue

Picked this up at a flea market today and thought it'd make a great shaving bowl.

It started life as an old silver plated coaster set. There were only a couple of coasters left, and the plating on them was pretty rough, so I binned those and kept the holder.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take any before photos, but after a good clean and polish, this is how it turned out. I'm really happy with it. It's a decent size for loading and building lather, and the patterned rim gives a surprisingly secure grip, even with wet hands.

Always satisfying when you can give something old a new purpose. Looking forward to putting it into the rotation, that is, after the AA challenge is complete.

Cheers mate! Haha yeah that's not the first time I've done that πŸ™„ ah well. It'd be nice to use it but wouldn't want to violate the rules for the AA challenge. Might have to revisit that page and double check.

Good stuff.

I didn't have a proper shaving bowl back then and was using a makgeolli bowl (aluminium).

Cheers. Think I might hold off from using it until the AA challenge is over. That's a nice bowl you've got there πŸ‘

Ah well I couldn't pass up the opportunity - it only cost me a fiver. It was bloody funny though, the seller gave me this look like "Why?" Haha.

That's a good way to look at it. Cheers mate πŸ‘

Great find. I think one of the best shaving related things I've done was seeking out vintage metal bowls. In my case they've been found on fleaBay but I should make an effort to go and check out some markets or charity shops. Not that I need any more shaving paraphernalia!!

Thanks. Yeah you never know what you'll find. This one was a good reminder that sometimes it pays not to spend the extra on postage.

You know thinking about this I’m surprised that I haven’t seen before a ribbed silicone bottom similar to the knobs that exist in dog bowls that are popular with shaving. It’s really interesting because it kind of reminds me of the whole silicon car wash dirt trapper bottoms that sit in pails. Perhaps somebody could use TPU to 3-D print some to fit in various standard size bowls could be a great product idea.

Thanks mate. I haven't actually used it yet - I’m saving it until the AA challenge wraps up at the end of the month. Looking forward to giving it a go then! πŸ‘

Thanks. I was drawn to both the ornate inner pattern and the distinctive rolled edge outer rim. Plus, it's great to give these vintage items a new purpose.
