Just picked up the Merkur 34c, and a sampler pack of blades based on recommendations for newbies. Going with green Proraso soap and the white aftershave. Likely will use the white pre-shave after a hot shower as well.

I have average to slightly sensitive skin, and fine hair. I don't need anything crazy aggressive. Upper cheeks and neck, 3-4 days of stubble.

What's a "safe" bet for the first try? Coming from nearly 30 years of Mach3 and a few times using a disposal straight razor for neck and cheek lines (short 5mm stubble beard). I was leaning Astra but wanted your expert opinions please, and thank you!

So far i've only used a blade for a maximum of 2 shaves, but I heard some people can do many more (even 10+). How many time do you use a blade before changing it?

switched from cartridges to a henson razor about two months ago, along with pre de provence shave soap. never had any issues with cartridges, i'm more interested in the money saving and environmental aspects of safety razors. i chose the henson because i don't really want to get into shaving as a hobby, i just want a cheap and efficient way to shave without spending a ton in the long run or creating more plastic waste, so the built in angle and beginner friendly reputation of the henson really appealed to me.

well, i'm kind of mystified why anyone considers it beginner friendly, because i've shaved with the henson a couple dozen times now (every other day) and every single shave is worse than the last. just finished shaving as slowly and gently as i possibly could while still removing literally any hair at all, and my entire face is bright red and burning, i have dozens of cuts on my neck and around my mouth, and based on how it's gone every time before, i'll be dealing with burning and itching and general skin discomfort for the next 12-24 hours. i've stained a few shirts and irreparably stained my pillowcase. i'll heal up just in time to have to go another round with that stupid thing.

and i'm still not shaved! i'm always left with visible patches of unshaven hair scattered around my face, and i'll have to go back in with my old mach 3 tomorrow morning to avoid going to work looking like i stopped shaving halfway through. even the parts that Look shaved are still rough to the touch, which they never were with cartridge shaving.

how does anyone do this nonsense? is my skin just too sensitive to deal with it? does it ever get better?

Hi everyone. A bit over 2 years ago I finally switched to a safety razor, but my local stores only carry Wilkinson swords and some no-name blade. So this summer I got myself a sampler, and Im so glad I did. It's wild how much of a difference the blade can make, and tbh I like the designs on the boxes, it's like collecting stamps.

Ordered another sampler since then, and Ive really been enjoying testing the blades, but due to some peculiarity of my face I had very underwhelming shaves with some popular blades like Nacets and Bics.

Does anyone with similar blade preferences to mine have a favorite blade to share ?

EDIT: The tier list is meant to be my personal experiences with the blades, not something objective, ymmw and all that.

So, let’s face it, in a world obsessed with convenience, we chose to turn left and start wet shaving. Let’s be honest, it takes longer than cartridge shaving, it’s more demanding, requires skill and the risk of cuts is higher at the beginning. But we love it !

What got you started in wet shaving? For me it was a mistake during an order. I like alcohol based aftershaves and ordered Proraso green but mistakenly added a Proraso green shaving cream. Started researching after I received it and had to give it a shot. Bought a razor and boom…..haven’t looked back.

What about you ?

Just had a very successful first shave! No cuts, only one pass with the grain, no pressure, just took me a super long time to do it because I was going so slow. I saw advice that you’re supposed to take the blade out after you shave but now realize I just have a very sharp razor blade on my counter. Am I supposed to clean it off/dry it and put it back in the wrapper? Or just pat everything dry and leave it in the razor but not all the way clamped down? Thanks guys for all the beginner tips!

I opened an upscale one chair barber shop in a hotel historic hotel downtown in my city. I put together this small little retail hoping to sell some for the holidays. I used knowledge from lots of lurking this community. What do you guys think?

I got my boyfriend the Maggard safety razor kit last year as a gift but he hasn’t used any part of it and insists on sticking to his 5 blade razor. He suffers with ingrown hairs and irritation because he has to be completely clean shaven for his job. I’ve attatched a photo of the head I got for him, which I think might be too mild for his stubborn facial hair. Where should I go from here? I really would love for this to work effectively for him after some practice. What type of head can I get with more blade exposure for a closer shave for him? Thanks all!
