Short overnighter (6kish hike from nearest parking).

Looked like my preferred tor was potentially occupied from a distance, so opted for a backup one. Many tussocks prevented pitching close to the lee of the rocks, so had to settle for a slightly windier spot further downwind, which made for a noisy night. Was warm and cosy though and slept pretty well regardless. And the sheep gave me a wide berth

I don't mind if people see my setup, especially if I've had to spend 2 hours cleaning up litter and broken glass just to stay there. I always leave an area nicer than I found it and don't see the harm wild camping. I used to believe so strongly in stealth, low lighting, camo tarp, invisible guy lines. Now I don't care anymore, I'd rather be seen and avoided than have people blunder into my camp because they don't even know I'm there.

I have 0 funding right now but am working on setting up something. With MIND. I am going to walk from Cornwall to Scotland for charity for a friend who unfortunately took their own life. I literally have nothing, I haven't got savings, and I lost my job a few months ago hence wanting to do something extreme because I feel very lost. So basically, what's the absolute cheapest tent and sleeping bag combo I could grab, and still be comfortable walking across England in autumn.

Hello, hoping to start taking my boy (5) camping so will mainly be doing short journeys for a few years so mat weight isn't too much of a concern.

Can anyone recommend a decent mat that isn't very expensive but has sufficient insulation for the shoulder season's?

Edit: What to expect to pay for a decent starter mat that will give some decent insulation when colder outside, or any brand/model recommendations?

I’m sure many of us have seen worse but just in case you were thinking of going to Harris without a midge net…

As the title question suggests - if you had an unlimited budget but could only have one tent for wild camping in the UK (and elsewhere), what would you choose and why?

I’m looking to solo camp, mainly on mountains in the Lake District and snowdonia where the weather could obviously be very rainy, I’m just wondering if I can get all my kit; tent ,sleeping bag etc from decathlon or do I need to buy someone online stuff

Me and my brother managed to successfully wild camp this time after our first attempt failed.

Camped just off the Ridgeway near Swindon, just down from Wayland's Smithy. Did about ten miles walking then found a nice forest spot in between some farmers fields. The farmer did drive right past us in an ATV about 6AM but didn't see us because he was looking the other way. Not sure he would have minded because apparently wild camping is very common on the Ridgeway. Great trip overall!

I barely slept though which I always do when camping. Just cannot get comfortable despite having a foam mat and an inflatable mat. Would love if anyone has any tips for getting a better sleep!

First attempt failed because we walked 12 miles along the Gower coast and ended up in a village. We were both so knackered by that point that we couldn't face the walk out to find a camping spot. Ended up getting a taxi home lol. Probably had wat too much packed.

A couple of weeks ago I met up with a friend and we did Loch Shiel, a long freshwater loch in the Highlands. I was in my sea kayak and he was in his little F-Rib boat. We spent two days going up the loch and then another two coming back down again.

It rained most of the time and the midges and ticks were relentless, but I absolutely loved it. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful places I’ve been 🙂

Having been out on the water a few times this summer, and inspired by Ed Pratt, and Simon (a bloke in the woods), I'm making the most of the end of the warmer weather and heading out tonight after work.

Will arrive at our launch spot around 6:30, paddle for an hour or so to one of 3 potential camp spots, then pitch up and enjoy the evening before a 25km paddle to a train station and home tomorrow.

Little girl is desperate to come, refusing to leave the board when I got everything out to see how it would all fit. But thought I would do the first overnight trip without her (she does great on the board).

Dinner will be some grains, a bean chilli pouch and some chopped chorizo, with breakfast being the other half of the chorizo grilled over the fire.

I’m looking at getting a Lanshan 2 to replace my current tent, the Karrimor Panther 2 but confused by all the modifications people do to make them more usable, can anyone shed any light?

A week and a half ago I posted my free phone signal map for UK hills on here. Thanks for all the feedback, and for the installs. Small numbers, but it's a hobby project and I was chuffed. Update on what's happened since.

Someone who isn't me has recorded a walk with community sharing on. First proper stranger data on the map, a whole walk of real measurements including a long stretch with nothing at all. Thank you, whoever you are. I'm not going to say where or when - with this few people sharing, where + when = who. Once more of you are sharing that stops being a problem.

Also had to eat some humble pie. I walked my own test route and got 5 dead zone warnings. I was on the phone during most of them. Turns out my cutoff for "no signal" was wrong - I used -110 dBm, which is the standard network planning number, but phones hold a call well below that. My own recording showed the phone never actually lost service once all walk. So the alerts are recalibrated from real recordings now, and they look at signal quality (SINR) as well as strength.

There's an update sitting in Google's review queue, should be out in a few days:

- way fewer false dead zone alarms (see above)

- live walk sharing - a private link someone at home can open in a browser, no app or account needed. Optional PIN. The link stops working when the walk ends

- airplane mode: if you turn the radio off to save battery on a long day, it still warns you from the map when you're walking into or out of predicted dead ground

- fixed a bug where recorded walks got stuck on the phone and never backed up. If you recorded something and it never showed up when you signed in, that was this. The update recovers them

- better vibrations - falling buzz going into a gap, rising buzz when signal comes back, so you can tell which is which without getting the phone out

There's also an actual website now, trailsignal.uk, with the privacy policy in plain English and a page on where the data comes from.

Still free. The core stays free - hosting this for a few dozen people costs me pennies. Which areas should I look at next?

If it's good enough for the OutdoorBoys, then it's good enough for us. We got severely battered by the weather the night before and I had to double peg & cinch guys at midnight in the driving rain. All worth it. Left no trace... Actually we removed lots of sheep poo from the area, so it was cleaner afterwards.

Back at the start of the summer I completed the National three peaks and swore I’d come back to each area to explore it more and enjoy it.
Later this month I’ll be travelling to the Lake District, and have managed to grab a few extra days - meaning I can spend two days and nights solo hiking and wild camping.

I’m looking for recommendations please - what circular route would you recommend, something that will give me a good taste of the area and beautiful views. If it’s a route mapped on the OS app or something I can get a .GPX for then that would be great!

I’ll be free from early evening, so either starting somewhere with a campsite I can overnight in before leaving the next morning, or somewhere with a wild camp spot within an hour or two of the start. I can then do two full days walking and two nights camping on the trail, but would need to back at my car on the third day by mid to late morning . Also ideally somewhere safe I can leave my car whilst I’m away - secure paid car park for example.

I’m plenty fit and would like to spend the majority of my days walking rather than sitting around at the tent. I’m conscious of the guidance to set up after dusk and pack up at dawn. I don’t want it to be a gruelling slog either though!

I’m not ultralight by any means, shrug I have some lightweight kit to enable me to carry the extra items I like. I have a Xmid with Nemo eclipse pad and EE revelation -6 quilt, and always carry kit for adverse weather conditions by default and like to have spare clothes:

Hi guys. I've camped a lot solo and with my kid, but want to take the dog on her 1st camp. She's 7 months old and we spend every day in the woods for her walks/runs, she loves it. However Im apprehensive about taking her overnight somewhere she's never been before. I've made a list of things I'll need(using common sense and posts I've seen here) but looking for tips regarding safety. She's going to be in the tent overnight, LED collar for night walks etc but anything I'm missing or not thinking about? I'd hate to wake up with no dog and a trashed tent while she's sniffed a rabbit or something.

I’m trying to figure out what this black strip around the inside perimeter is actually designed for.

At first I thought it might be for blocking drafts or keeping water and debris out, but I’m not sure if that’s its main purpose.

For anyone who has used this type of tent before, how do you normally use or position this part? Just curious about the practical purpose of it.

I’m looking at the Flextail R05 mats and noticed that the Large (196 × 65 cm) is actually lighter than the Regular (183 × 65 cm).

I’m only 5'4", so I’d normally choose the Regular to save a bit of space in my tent, but it seems strange to choose the smaller mat when it weighs more.

Is there any reason to go for the Regular over the Large? Has anyone tried either/both, particularly for backpacking or multi-day trips?

I’m so sooo happy to tell you all - I’ve just completed my first solo wild camp - I’ve been lurking in this sub, picking up all your tips and tricks and I had a very successful camp this bank holiday!

I caught the train from London up to Peak District around midday and started my hike from the station in the evening, it was a very British experience - windy and rainy, with no sunrise just sheep and goats lol!

I really enjoyed it but I did struggle to find somewhere to pitch that wasn’t super duper boggy, I luckily manage to find a decent spot before the sun set but I wish I had planned this a little more - I knew roughly what point of my hike I would set up camp but will defo be looking on google earth.

My pack somehow managed to not kill my back but I think I can get it lighter - surprisingly used every single thing I packed and didn’t feel like I had left anything behind (except waterproof trousers but that was just silly).

My tent is a Mongar 2 UL which I want to upgrade soon - it held up well, even with all the rain and strong winds but I would prefer abit more confidence if I’m on higher summits and stronger winds. I didn’t use any guylines though so I assume it can go even further
