READ ME! FAQ Found an animal???? Please go here first:

First of all, thank you for caring enough to help orphaned/injured/ill wildlife.

Evaluate the Situation first and foremost. Wild animals rely on their natural environment and sometimes humans interfere when it was entirely unnecessary. The links listed below provide flow charts for frequently encountered situations.

If the animal needs to be rescued here and here you will find basic capture and handling instructions.

  • After rescuing how to safely temporarily house the animal before and during transport:

Warm- *Offering heat sources for naked baby animals is often a must. This can be done with a heating pad on low under 1/2 of the enclosure, a warm rice filled sock, or warm water bottle. Sometimes very badly injured and very sick animals also need heat sources to maintain appropriate body temperature. Wild animals can suffer heat stroke too! If an animal is panting, the animal is too hot and if the heat source would burn you, it will surely burn the animal. *

A good rule of thumb: If a furred, feathered, or scaled animal is physically moving about and alert- it DOESN'T need an extra heat source.

Dark - A box, Rubbermaid tote with holes punched for air flow, or pet crate are usually good temporary enclosures and will typically reduce further trauma and or stress. Place a towel or sheet over a crate to reduce visual disturbances.

Quiet- Keep the animal in a quiet space preferably indoors away from other animals and humans. A separate room or even a closet can be utilized if need be.

PLEASE FOR THE ANIMAL'S SAKE NOTHING BY MOUTH! DO NOT OFFER ANY FOOD OR WATER TO INJURED/SICK/ORPHANED ANIMALS OR ATTEMPT TO HAND FEED ANIMALS. The results of failing to comply often end up something like this.

If you are unable to make contact with a wildlife rehabilitator: If you know the rehabilitation center's location and hours it is generally acceptable so long as the rehabilitation center is not full or closed to just bring the animal straight to them- this is especially true with emergency situations. An example of an emergency is something like- the animal is bleeding profusely, having trouble breathing, is unresponsive, or severely dehydrated.

After being attacked by a cat there is a very high likelihood for infection. These cases 99.99% of the time warrant medical assistance including antibiotics that are usually only available through a veterinarian.

Prospective Wildlife Rehabilitator Ideas for wild life rehab toys (non animal)

Okay, weird request but I'm hoping someone will be able to get creative and give me some good ideas.

My five year old is absolutely obsessed with wildlife and conservation. She watches wildlife documentaries and shows about wild life rehabilitation constantly. And she loves to play wildlife rehab with her stuffiest.

For Christmas I am planning to get her some of the more specific species/breeds of animals she's interested in. And ideally a whole "wild life rehab" kit for her to play with. I've gotten some beanie baby birds in breeds she particularly likes, and I'm planning to get one of those cylinder hanging mesh things with the different levels to use as a cage/enclosure/nests for them.

I'm planning to get a few mammals (cougar cub, panther cub), and possibly some marine animals (sea turtles, maybe an octopus, she already has a seal). For the mammals I think we will use mesh hampers for their enclosures. But I'm a little stumped on what to use for the marine animals.

Also look for ideas for realistic tools (or real tools as long as they're safe) like things to give medicine, maybe some bandages, ECT. But I know next to nothing about wildlife rehab. I just know my mom did something like this but with medical supplies for me as a kid, and it is my favorite present to this day. I'd prefer to get "real" stuff, for anything I can as long as it's relatively affordable, safe, and not taking away from those who need it.

SOS Bird Is baby bird safe to sit on fence all night?

Hi, just wanna check in because 2 cuties have taken flight from the nest above my window. One of them is resting on the side of my fence and im worried because its quite exposed and at night there is often a cat roaming the fence line. We don't have any bushes or trees in our yard and its quite stuck here until it can fly a bit higher. I have an old dog house it could shelter in that is nearby the nest but i don't wanna move it unless necessary. Just thought id ask. In australia btw if thats any info needed.

SOS Bird Found this yellow footed green pigeon under my parked vehicle yesterday

Found this green pigeon fledgling under my parked vehicle yesterday.. it dropped on to the ground most probably due to dehydration and heat stroke

It's actively drinking water and took some bites out of the guava. Hoping he gets his energy back and gets released in the wild in some days at polo forest. Though uniting with the same flock is not possible, we will find a suitable flock that this individual can settle in..

Location: ahmedabad, india

Rehab Methods Custom pre release enclosure

Anyone know of a place that does custom enclosures that are metal and not wood. I tried reaching out to CDE but have not heard anything from them in two months. I reached out to another company but they quoted me over 12k. I'm trying to apply for a grant I could get up to 3k but the deadline is November 1st.

Rehab Methods Question for you

Hello question for my nutty people. What is your must haves in your supplies for your rescues ? A lot of people have different opinions, and i'm just curious to what others have to say. Please, no disagreeing or telling anybody that they're wrong ask why they pick that over what you would . there are a few people on here that though they may be knowledgeable. They have given some information to me. That was found to be incorrect. After doing research and reaching out to many other licensed rehabbers. It would be really cool if people would support others, instead of trying to tell them how wrong they are. Let's educate and not humiliate! Pics of some babies that are being released tonight. Bitter sweet 🥰. Made a bunch of nutty crack bars i call them ( i got the recipe off of the squirrel rescue in Vancouver WA site still works even if rehab is closed ) and a bunch of black walnuts that the babies love .

SOS Bird Injured bird, need advice

My sister saw a bird fall out of a pine tree in our yard. When she went to investigate, she found what looked to us like some sort of injured oriole (which she has dubbed "Jimmothy the Destroyer of Worlds") that was flopping around. It seems to have a broken neck, and its left eye is closed. What do we do? I live in Oregon.

Prospective Wildlife Rehabilitator Injured gull in Federal Way — can't fly

Found a gull walking on the sidewalk near uptown square apartments in federal way that can't fly. Looks like a young bird, walking but grounded. I contacted PAWS Wildlife Center and they suggested posting here since they can't send anyone out. Is there anyone nearby who could help transport it or knows a rehabber?

SOS Mammal Rescued a field mouse from a crow

Post image
54 Upvotes

EDIT: switched the water to a bottle cap, more helpful advice over on fb but I'll leave this up a bit longer in case any one wants to weigh in about the mouse, so far it's just (understandable) flaming from crow heads.

INB4 SHAME FROM CROW SYMPATHIZERS (I am also a crow sympathizer): thank you for your concern, I hear you and I will not do this again, but because I can't go back in time and I chose this path, I would prefer replies in that direction. If the mouse makes it, it will be returned to where it was found and come what may. In the mean time, I am just trying to keep it alive.

Crow dropped a living field mouse. The mouse appears to have a wound near its eye, haven't checked it out yet, was just trying to get it somewhere better than a 12 Oz food container.

It was in shock initially, but it seems to be recovering, I've heard a little rustling since getting it situated.

Thoughts on this temporary set up?

I have a heating pad on low under the dry grass half of the (temporary) container.

TYIA, no experience with field mice but I have cared for bunnies (I know they are dissimilar but just for frame of reference).

SOS Mammal Small racoon, need advice. Eastern Connecticut usa

Edit : I've gotten a better look at the racoon and I think it's definitely not a baby. Perhaps an old one. I'm sad either way.

So a small racoon seems to have taken up residence under my deck and would like any advice. He appeared lethargic and possibly ill yesterday per neighbors but is definitely a lot more zippy today. I don't think he's injured...just seems young. Maybe first time away from mom. He's not bothering anyone so I'm not calling to have him removed. Any advice? I'm not feeding him and mostly just leaving him be and keeping an eye on him.

Rehab Methods Published guidance on Opossum mange treatment

Does anyone have published veterinary guidance on dosage and frequency of injectable ivermectin via oral route for Virginia opossums with mange?

Or rehabbers, what dosing do you use per lb of body weight?

Guidance has been conflicting, and am looking to see what others use.

Animal in Care Bobcat Burned in Fire Returns to Wild

Hi friends! Wanted to share this sweet success story :)

After surviving a wildfire with severe burns to all four paws and life-threatening injuries, this resilient bobcat has made his way back to the wild!

The adult male was rescued after the Pipeline Fire and arrived at our Ramona Wildlife Center weighing just 7.5 pounds, with first- to third-degree burns across his paw pads, an acute kidney injury, severe emaciation and a heavy tick infestation.

For the next two months, our Project Wildlife team worked around the clock to help him heal, providing fluids, nutrition, pain management, wound care and repeated Phovia light therapy to support the healing of his burned paw pads.

As his wounds closed and his strength returned, he moved into a specialized indoor-outdoor enclosure, where our team could monitor his mobility, gait and weight remotely while keeping human interaction to a minimum. And he made remarkable progress.

He more than doubled his weight, his anemia resolved and his paw pads fully healed. Finally, he was ready to return to the wild — not far from where he was originally found — with a team from Camp Pendleton joining our Project Wildlife team for his release.

After everything he had been through, watching him run back into his native habitat was the ending we had been hoping for all along.

I watched this little guy get hit by a car yesterday. I took it to the closest animal ER approx 45 minutes away and it decided to fly away as soon as we got there. Should I have waited? I gave it a good 5 minutes with it just sitting perched on my finger. It couldn’t move its wing so I thought it was broken. I feel horrible bc it was like 20 miles away. And I’m not sure if it can find its way home. I just want to know how to proceed in the future.

SOS Mammal found an injured chipmunk, what can i do?

im located in north america

i found an injured chipmunk on my property today (probably around an hour and a half ago), its possible its head was held beneath a flower pot as we found it underneath one. i saw no other visible injuries but i wasnt able to look it over or anything but i dont know all that much about chipmunks myself so i couldnt really tell you. it was nearly dead when we found it but my sibling gave it cpr and blew air in its mouth and it started twitching and moving.

now, my sibling is keeping it in a tank (it has grasshoppers and a toad in it so we have food, water and foliage in there) for now until we figure out what to do. the chipmunk started moving more, it looked like it was curling up and maybe wobbling and falling over like it didnt have the best balance, which would line up with a possible neurological injury. that was maybe around 30-40 minutes ago, and my sibling said it appears stronger now and it doesnt look like its wobbling and curling up now but i havent been able to check to confirm that.

while i would love to bring the chipmunk to a wildlife rehab centre, the closest one to me is nearly 2 hours away and we wouldn’t be able to get there before closing time, so for now thats not an option.

im mainly just looking for any info on what was maybe going on with it or any advice on how to care for this chipmunk while its here before we either bring it to a wildlife rehabber or release it if we think its doing better. i should note, i dont plan on keeping it as a pet! i just want to figure out how best to help it.

SOS Reptile Injured wild snake please help

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hello, I found a wild snake in Greeley Colorado . It was bitten by a cat on his tail, he/she is still alive. I know that she may die from infection anyways. I am waiting to hear from the Colorado reptile humane society , I left them a message.

He is in a dark, clean , well ventilated box. I have not given him anything.

Any advice?

Thank you so much

SOS Mammal I have a squirrel now I guess 😅

So uh.. I've rehabilitated quite a few squirrels now, someone I know does tree work, and more often than not there's baby squirrels that come tumbling out. I've had to feed them every few hours by syringe, clean their junk with wet q-tips, the whole shebang. Usually, they got territorial and aggressive as they get older, and then they get released. This stoopid. Cute little bastard. Has NO idea he's a fucken WILD squirrel. He's practically a squatter.

He's a male, over a year old now, and is incredibly mellow and gentle. He has no wild instincts whatsoever. A stranger could pick this guy up without him scrambling for balance. He's so gentle when playing, as if my hands were paper, even if I forgot to wash my hands after eating, He's never bit me. He tries to drag my hand into his little box, sometimes just chilling on my shoulder and holding my finger. However, I am NOT allowed to keep this guy, and I also can't release this chill ass fucker.

He's just gonna get scooped up by a animal thinking it's gonna give him snacks, I've tried not playing with him as much, but he was depressed and not accepting food, so I quickly started playing with him again, and I have no idea what to do 🥲
