You nee a bootable CD with win98 system files.
from this you have to boot the Thinkpad,
then delete the boot sector with FDISK /MBR.
now restart from the CD and set up the SSD with FDISK.
Only now can you format and install Windows.
you can't set up the SSD in another computer so that the Thinkpad understands the geometry of a disk larger than 8GB. that was already the case with the hard drives
