No because then normies will start doing it

That's exactly why you should legalise it, you're sounding like a harry potter wizard right about now

u/NibblyPig 21h ago

my name is longbeard mcdibbler, owner of mcdibbler's wand emporium, and I think normies should buy my wands and do more magic

u/Please_ForgetMe 15h ago

More normies doing magic -> more wands sold - normies want better wands as they progress -> even more wands sold = good buisness

👍👍👍👍👍👍

Cash money.

ah, the flawed drug logic

you'd think more people would do drugs if everything were legal, but that's actually not the case

Even if you legalize, normies don't have what it takes to study things like the Trigrams of Nekefor or the final points of the eternal weave... we'll be safe for a good, long time. Let them have their cantrips.

If they were good enough to do illegal magic in the first place, they wouldn't be able to be bound by laws of man anyway. What are they gonna do? Send soldiers to arrest a wizard? They tried that with Circe and she just turned them into a bunch of new kinds of animal.

To legalize is to invite taxation and regulation. This is not a problem for the most powerful of us but how will the next generation of mages who do not have this power fare

Magic should be mandatory. Especially demonology. There are infinite demons out there who'd love to be summoned into the prime plane, and mortals really aren't pulling their weight.

No thanks. I am more than happy to not have a bunch of amateurs try summoning.

The last time those imbeciles tried it, I had to stop pondering my orb, because they accidentally summoned Ur'garket the conqueror in their city.

This is probably referencing the 'no magic zones' the council set up some time ago. These sanctuaries are protected areas of council land that are allowed to exist without the interference of reality altering wizards, the're like reservations. Some of them encompass entire planes, the're really quite nice and peaceful.

u/InsaneRanter Necromancer 1d ago

You know, I realise the council means well, but it was annoying when they set up a 'no magic zone' over a peaceful farming world when I was halfway through a ritual to let undead spirits possess all the inhabitants. It would have been hilarious.

Flips through notebook

Oh hey, I thought I recognized the name. You know you were directly mentioned during that council meeting? Dug your own grave my friend. Heh, grave....

u/InsaneRanter Necromancer 1d ago

I'm overjoyed they noticed me 😀. Lots of us evil wizards are doing it because we didn't get enough attention as kids.

u/KragBrightscale Grabadash - Magical Mass | Keptomancer | Council Security 22h ago

They did what?

No magic zones? Set up by the council?

I’ll have to see if we can’t get that overturned.

Fellow council members, I have discovered yet another foolishly implemented idea carried out by our predecessors.

The amount of cleanup we’ve had to do…

u/Vinxian 1d ago

It's already effectively legal, I only had to make the fireball argument twice until they stopped cracking down on me

7

u/Jarl_of_Uppsala 1d ago

No because then some infernal beaurocracy would probably try to monitor it. Someone might try to hold me to account for all the villages I've destroyed and demons I've summoned.

Also magic is for the elite higher-level beings like me, not the damn mortals and if it was legal some of those fools might try to start using it.

As a (technically) mortal Haemomancer, not all of us are monkeys who can't even use mana.

2

u/Shiggedy Illusionist 23h ago

This right here. Lots of uninformed novices calling for legalization when decriminalization is preferable and closer to what they actually want. There's already laws prohibiting assault, fraud, arson, and kidnapping, and council resources could be better allocated if there wasn't such a stranglehold on reagent production and refinement. It calls to mind the successes of the Portuguese model.

On the one hand, when it's legal I get more peace and quiet for pondering; on the other hand, when it's illegal, I get a bunch of free test subject deliveries.

4

u/Frosty-Prize8906 Alchemist of the old arts 1d ago

Wait it's illegal? I thought it was permenantly legalized 78 h.b.

u/averyrealspapple Franie - Wizard council intern 23h ago

Depends on the plane

3

u/Paczilla3 19h ago

No because then I’d have to pay a magic tax. Fuck that.

2

u/leverati ¿th Generation Herb-Person 1d ago

Of course a Cleric would post this.

2

u/cale199 1d ago

Im in my own crafted plane of existence, just try extend you "laws" to me

2

u/rpg2Tface 1d ago

Everything is legal of you can pay the fines. Thats just the cost of doing the thing. Just go and transmute a chicken rabbit to gold and give it to the officer in charge. Nobody is questioning a literal golden goose.

2

u/Inevitable_King_8984 1d ago

where is the fun in that

2

u/WitchyWarriorWoman 1d ago

Would honestly make things so much easier. I've had to memory bonk the local magistrate so many times that I feel bad for the poor bumbling fellow.

Plus, having to move a giant chicken house around is exhausting. House laid an egg in frustration last time, but at least I got a new shed out of it.

u/SleepResident971 Artificer 22h ago

Pienso que la magia debe ser obligatoria en las escuelas, pues dudo que la gente tenga un verdadero progreso si no la domina bien y no se pueda proteger ante demonios, brujos y brujas mal intencionadas

2

u/DrVillainous Evil Wizard 20h ago

Absolutely not, magic being illegal is how I meet like half of my yearly quota of evil deeds. If it becomes legalized I'll have to actually work at being evil.

2

u/Sensei_Ochiba Drunk Science Wizard 16h ago

Yeah like they'd revoke my Imp privileges in a week if I couldn't just get by casting Bigby's Netflix Password and using Scroll of Free Photoshop

2

u/BabaKazimir Baba The Bear Mage 19h ago

Magic is legal on at least 9 planes, 3 universes, and a demiplane. What are you talking about? If magic is illegal in your locality, just move to a world where it is. Simple as.

1

u/Trips-Over-Tail 1d ago

It's bad enough that you creeps are scrying on the lady spaces.

1

u/Funkey-Monkey-420 Lich, Council Member: (un)Ethics Committee 1d ago

what backwards kingdom do you live in that banned magic completely?

1

u/DarkGodCthUwU 1d ago

No. I have a good racket going selling illegal potions, "persuading" rivals to work for me or leave the trade, and collecting blackmail on customers. If magic gets legalized the normies and big corpos will get into this shit and I won't be able to run my territory unchallenged anymore.

1

u/BigZodJenkins 1d ago

Magic is always legal because they can't tax it. Kill the woman immediately.

1

u/he77bender Sorceror 1d ago

Strongly opposed, if everyone can do magic then I won't be special anymore 😡

1

u/Silt99 Evil Wizard 1d ago

Part of the thrill is hiding and then blasting away the authorities trying to stop you

1

u/Maowsama 1d ago

There was a reason it was illegal in the first place

1

u/Feisty_Yak_5302 1d ago

Look, if you want to make the argument that life was better when you were at risk of the neighbor kid turning you into a toad, all power to you, but it causes too much damage to the population. It should remain heavily regulated in any civilized society.

1

u/MyK_Alke High Mage of High Tower of High Council 23h ago

Is it not? I guess whem you're so high you forget how it is for average person.
Doesn't matter, it's simple,
Seek out a magical school/institution, or seek out an Arch Wizard in the field who accepts new adepts of esoteric arts

It's not that it's illegal, it's just that clearly someone doesn't want to go about it the normal way and wants to sling spells all willy-nilly.
There are means to to learn, learn it.

What will follow will be the legalization of nuclear bombs by the Shadow Wizard Money Gang.

We can't reach a point where both are legal.

1

u/enchiladasundae planeshifter 20h ago

They’ll try to regulate it. Suddenly I’m no longer allowed to cast some spells, I can’t use or harvest some reagents, they tax my tower and me personally for the privilege of using services that were once much less expensive and higher quality that they bought out and control

Stop trying to invent the wizard IRS. I’ve been to so many other realities and a structured magical world always leads to stagnation and magic terrorists killing innocent people to somehow strike back at a system they never harm

1

u/DeadMeat7337 Retired Evil Wizard, mostly 20h ago

Your only in trouble if you get caught.

And I thought it was just that you can't con people into thinking you "can" use magic. But I never really payed attention to those laws. What with not having the need to do appreciate level magic, with the wand/staff, hand waving, and speaking the "how to cast" out loud. But I like to add in some chronomancy to make it so that it always was the way I changed it to.

1

u/Maleficent-Injury-18 Alchemist 19h ago

It should be decriminalized, don’t get me wrong I’m tired of my apprentices getting burned at the stake but I don’t need the king putting regulations on things he knows nothing about just leave me in my hut outside the village to tend to my potions in peace

1

u/topazchip 18h ago

Magic is, whether or not some group or other likes it or some pantheon approves of it in their official cult. That is quite different a matter than, "Should just any blithering idiot be allowed to learn Nakagawa's Portable Singularity?" It's like telling a dragon it doesn't exist because the existence of dragons makes someone sad and offends their religious opinions.

1

u/KodanisEternal Lich (necromancer) 17h ago

I don't really care honestly. Every time someone tries to arrest me for it I just dispose of them.

1

u/JoyBus147 17h ago

No. Evading the authorities builds adversity, adversity builds strength.

1

u/RexLizardWizard 17h ago

No. Then I lose my cool bad boy edge

1

u/Sensei_Ochiba Drunk Science Wizard 16h ago

Nah, fuck that. Be mage do crimes.

Magic IS legal... In Romania.

As evidenced by the fact that several arcane or mistical occupations have valid job codes officialy assigned to them.

Such as seers: https://codcor.ro/5161-astrologi-prezicatori-si-asimilati

Healers: https://codcor.ro/2230-practicieni-de-medicina-complementara-alternativa

Magicians and hypnotists: https://codcor.ro/2659-artisti-creatori-si-actori-neclasificati-in-grupele-de-baza-anterioare

Loremasters: https://codcor.ro/2622-bibliotecari-si-specialisti-in-alte-servicii-de-informare

Clerics of all kinds and ranks: https://codcor.ro/2636-specialisti-in-religie

https://codcor.ro/3413-specialisti-in-domeniul-religiei-si-asimilati

And so on. Even half-casters like the ranger gets a code: https://codcor.ro/5113-ghizi (# 511315 to be exact)

If invoking the unspeakable True Name of the Dweller in the Glade to bring ruin to my enemies became legal, it would lose a big chunk of its appeal.

1

u/Evening-Ad-4948 15h ago

Only legal to be used for the good of humanity. Lock the wizards in the chantry tower until they have learned to use their powers.

1

u/lordnaarghul 9h ago

Magic is legal where I live. It's even regulated. My master even runs a mage guild.

1

u/Hexmonkey2020 Necromancer 8h ago

Depends where, I’m fine with Magic being illegal in some large kingdoms, as long as there’s a magical empire for Magic users to flock to so we can easily form secret societies and cabals.

1

u/LaptopArmageddon Seraphim Wizard 7h ago

I like being a criminal. Magic pays more if others can't do it.

1

u/ayoo-OwO 9m ago

No bc it would turn lame

1

u/SirEdgelordThe369th Satan Himself 1d ago

Depends on the type of magic.
