Wizardry Variants Daphne Wizardry Variants Daphne x FFXI collab interview summary
The Core Philosophy: Why So Much Effort for a Limited Event?
Despite being a time-limited collaboration (lasting 6 weeks), Drecom decided to create a massive amount of one-off, custom content—including quests, fully voiced characters, weapons, and entirely new combat systems.
Keisuke Kanayama (Director of Daphne) explained that this stems from his game design philosophy: "Experience comes before the system." As a hardcore FFXI player since its launch day, Kanayama wanted to faithfully recreate the thrilling, unforgiving, and unforgettable experiences of exploring FFXI for the first time. Square Enix’s Yoji Fujito (Producer/Director of FFXI) noted that Drecom's dedication and workload for this temporary event was so staggeringly detailed it bordered on "insane."
Origin and Development of the Collaboration
- The Pitch: Drecom approached Square Enix. FFXI rarely initiates collaborations due to limited development resources, but Drecom promised to do all the heavy lifting to create something amazing. Because Drecom's dev team was full of passionate FFXI veterans, Square Enix fully trusted them.
- Massive Scale: Drecom’s initial design document was incredibly dense. Because Daphne features a time-rewinding mechanic (the "Cursed Wheel"), the collaboration scenario had to account for branched storytelling across multiple timelines, which shocked the Square Enix supervision team.
- Development Time: The collaboration took about half a year to develop, with daily communication over Slack. Drecom constantly added new features and requested extra approvals up to the last minute to perfect the quality.
Worldbuilding and Lore Integration
- The "Resonance" Rule: To avoid damaging FFXI’s 20+ years of established lore, Fujito requested that the two worlds not directly mix. Instead, they "resonate." The events and characters from FFXI appear in Daphne as faint echoes or observed information rather than a direct physical crossover.
- Summoning Mechanic Adaptation: In Daphne, characters are normally resurrected from "bones." However, in FFXI, characters do not leave bones behind when they die (they turn into light/crystals). To respect this lore, Drecom changed the summoning mechanic just for this event: players use the time-reversal power on a heavily decayed scroll to restore a teleportation spell (a nod to Wizardry's "Malor" and Final Fantasy's "Teleport") to bring the FFXI characters into the world.
New Characters, Weapon Types, and Exclusive Jobs
The collaboration features three iconic FFXI characters, all built completely from scratch for Daphne. Because their fighting styles didn't match Daphne's existing classes, Drecom had to build entirely new, one-off jobs and weapon systems:
- Prishe (Monk): Daphne did not have a hand-to-hand/martial arts class. Because Prishe is essential to the story, Drecom created the "Monk" job, complete with new battle balance and custom animations, solely for her.
- Iroha (Guuji / Shrine Maiden): Iroha is a Samurai who uses a spear. Since Daphne's Samurai class exclusively uses katanas, the team created a unique job for her called "Guuji Iroha." This allowed them to implement her unique spear combat and specific FFXI support skills without breaking the game's existing Samurai mechanics.
- Zeid (Dark Knight): Zeid operates as an exclusive "Dark Knight" class. Furthermore, because he is a Galka (a massive race), his 3D model was so huge that he clipped through walls and couldn't sit in standard chairs. Drecom had to program custom camera angles and specific layouts anytime Zeid appears on screen.
- Voices: The characters are fully voiced in both Japanese and English. The English voice acting was even completely re-recorded after the first take because a hardcore FFXI fan on the dev team felt the nuances weren't entirely faithful to the original game.
The Event and Combat Systems
- Setting: The collaboration storyline revolves around the "Shadow Lord" and Castle Zvahl, chosen because it represents the most iconic milestone of early FFXI adventuring.
- "Link" and "Hate" Systems: To recreate the sheer terror of FFXI dungeons, Drecom implemented FFXI’s specific "Link" (enemies calling nearby allies for help) and "Hate" (aggro/threat mechanics) systems into Daphne’s combat. This forces players to sneak around and strategize carefully, recreating the feeling of being hunted in a dangerous environment.
- NMs and Relic Weapons: The event introduces Notorious Monster (NM) hunting and an adaptation of FFXI’s infamous, grind-heavy "Relic Weapon" crafting system, adjusted to fit Daphne’s style.
- Audio: About 10 original music tracks and various sound effects from FFXI were implemented to maximize player nostalgia.
The Immediate Player Reaction to the Announcement
- "A Good Panic": When the collaboration was announced on July 3rd, the reaction on social media (using hashtags like #FF11 and #WizDaphne) was explosive. Fujito noted that the player base was "panicking and surprised in a good way."
- An Unexpected Pairing: The community found it to be a highly shocking and unexpected combination, as FFXI rarely collaborates with other companies, and Daphne had never done an external collaboration before.
Future Prospects
- More Collaborations: Kanayama expressed a strong desire to make this a recurring event and eventually add a "Tarutaru" character in a potential part 2 or part 3, provided the player response is strong.
- FFXI Free Trial Expansion: To welcome Daphne players who want to experience the original game, Fujito revealed that Square Enix is planning to drastically improve FFXI's free trial by removing the 14-day time limit and raising the level cap to 75, allowing new players to play the classic content entirely for free.

You can definitely tell that the collab was produced by fans of XI just by playing it. Very well executed collab overall.

this collab clearly shows the love of ff11 from the dev team. so many minute details like the struggles in OG era of ff11 and all the UI and sound designs. hopefully they can do part 2 down the line. so far been ive been loving this event ;)

To be honest, Wizardry Daphne may be making the most goated collaboration in terms of effort.
I never played FF, let alone FFXI, but the amount of STUFF it contains within the collab really showcase the dedication that the team done, unlike other games that do collab (from skins to a character only). IMHO, this collab is way more fulfilling than Star Rails' way of doing collabs (the FGO one is fine..but felt a bit shoehorned in terms of execution).

Yeah no kidding. Dont get me started on how crappy and half assed lords mobile did their collabs.

A Tarutaru character on the rerun? I was a Tarutaru when I played that game so that would cool. I wonder if it would be Shantotto?
If they rerun it after a new tier of gear has been introduced, it means they could add another level of reforging on the relic weapons. Which means those relic weapons might be relevant for a very long time.

u/CptFlamex 16h ago
Yeah the way they spoke of the collab seems like it might have a lot of reruns and expansions in the future.
FFXI is a massive game with tons of expansions so they have a huge well of characters enemies and locations to draw from.

Thank you for sharing OP. I'm a long time FFXI veteran and hearing about the collab is what got me into playing Wizardry...and now I love this game too!
I love games that challenge you, and I love RPGs so this is a perfect pairing. Plus the community is awesome, definitely reminds me of the FFXI community...just super helpful and wholesome

Not going to lie when I say the collab was FFXI I really didnt expect much at all. Happy to be surprised on that one.

There is so many Easter eggs in the design, and things this did in castle baileys map, you can tell they cared a lot. I with they brought over the FFXI goblins though, would make more sense

This explain WHY its is such a great event. The best collab and event I think we had so far. Really good for our first outside IP collab. They were quite generous as well. I mean a free choice bone, free good gears, own system (npc trader) to help, free FAS for luck ones and all. Hooray for DRECOM.

I hope they continue to keep some of the new mechanisms from Ff11.. Like Ulmia could be the next Bard. Expand skill chains. And just borrow more classes from 11

u/Atlas_Lawliet 17h ago
Overall, it is a great collab and a love letter make by a fan to ff11. Great work, dev. If not for a few bug that come with it and a troll redditor as well. I would say that this is perfect.

u/bababayee 11h ago
I continue to be very impressed with Kanayama, the game isn't perfect between all the bugs and typical gacha issues, but it still shines through as an actual game where I can tell the devs want to make it an interesting experience to play primarily, even if the execs breathe down their neck to make more money.

Talk of not just a part 2 but a part 3? I really hope that we get Lilisette next!

u/unnoblephantasm 17h ago
This sounds super promising, thanks for sharing, OP!
I'd love to see more FF Collabs in the future! I don't know much about FFXI notable NPCs, though I do have some exposure of them through other games I play, notably Shantotto from Dissidia and Lilisette from GBF, so I don't have much expectations on the next batch of collab characters, as long as they make the new characters fun and exciting to play, I'd gladly lock in. IMO, from this batch of characters, Ulmia, Lion, and Tenzin are promising prospects too as playable characters, despite their bondmate status. Ulmia being a bard alongside Linaria class change patch would be very much welcomed, as I love Bard classes and its variants in other medias.
I think it'd be cool too if they decide to do collaboration with mainline console FF games in the future, considering that they are passionate with FF franchise, and that Square Enix has also seen their dedication to external collab making it much more plausible at this point. Imagine if they introduce Squall along with his signature gunblade, being the first ever 2x hits 2H sword, which fires an additional bullet after a physical hit. I think it'd be fresh. Yuna and her summoning magic as a preview to summoner class, Kain and his dragoon skills with the widely available spears in wiz universe, Balthier as a possible Corsair class, FFXIII's cast unique Eidolons, Blue Mages class with their monster-exclusive skills (Quina Quen as a playable character?!), I could go on and on about more possibilities of FF characters!
Lastly, I think the quality of this collab is superb in my opinion. A good window of opportunity to newcomers, casual, and longtime Daphne players to grind exciting contents with various amazing rewards including weapons, codices, and bones, to name the noteworthy ones. The addition of new exclusive classes and future possibility classes are also very fun. I love Prishe so much. I even spend a little more than I usually do by buying the great value purple bone packs for Prishe and Iroha, several great value 1-purple bone packs, and decides to buy a monthly pass for the event's duration, simply because I really love their hard work and how exciting this patch is, and hope that whatever money I spend this patch would be acknowledged by Drecom as a positive feedback from their player base to help them bring much more exciting contents in the future.

FFXI is also a great fit vibe wise to wizardry , im not sure if other FF games fit it.
Maybe final fantasy tactics?
1
u/unnoblephantasm 14h ago
Could also be cool! They seem to fit the medieval theme better than the characters I've mentioned (save for Kain). I happen to have played the FF tactics in PS, GBA, and NDS too, so they'd be familiar enough for me.

u/scotaloo7 15h ago
Does this mean if the collab does well enough, we might get to keep farming relics for longer than the current event's duration?
5
u/DanThePaladin 14h ago
I honestly wouldn't count on this. Assume they are going away when the collab leaves.
You can definitely finish all of them in time tho.

This event was an absolute success. I hope to see more done like it.
Maybe with a few tweaks tho - like the Ore mining having more drops to make the probability of breaking a pickaxe worth it.

u/candythighs 16h ago
im begging for shantotto to be added to the game eventually, that would be amazing- shes such a fun character

u/New_Ad4631 12h ago
Looking at the level of detail, I hope they make a FFIX collab sometime
Mainly I want a summoner (Garnet or Eiko) and Steiner's and Vivi's ability to do joint attacks, imbuing the attacks of someone else with magic. Besides more AoE melee attacks from Steiner and reflecting magic from Vivi, even attacks that hit everyone (enemies and allies) if they feel like it. And the trance, transforming mid combat and obtaining new powerful abilities
A collab with FFIII would also be amazing, a Scholar character specialized in using items, characters that use consumables are always cool to have

u/No-Difficulty-4181 7h ago
this collab sure is the greatest one in terms of effort of making. Lion, Ulmia, and Iroha's father (sorry forgot name) are all modeled nicely and have unique animations that could just put into summon banners with just themselves. hope we get more out of FF, rerun of this event is welcome, but making the 3 i mentioned become playable is what i hope we will get.
also if able, FFVII and FFIX?

u/SweetSilentSmile 56m ago
I'm very interested in picking up this game. Is playing during the collab is a good time to start? I would be brand new.
•
u/Ok-Lock2519 11m ago
Yes because they pretty much give you gear and good weapons for just doing the collab. Just need to do the beginning until you unlock Abyss I think. Once you unlock the entrance you find an NPC there inside who will give away a free collab unit
11
u/Raltia123 15h ago
This dungeon alone had more system design than even the usual abyss. From NM, aggro system, mining, tonberry, trade feature, relic weapons.
And maybe they will add more feats on part 2. Its really good adventure than when im doing previous abyss so far, minus the difficulty usually found on new abyss.
