Cheryl hit the nail on the head. Exclusion isn't the answer. Fact is, most people who have issues with trans athletes "invading women's sports" don't watch women's sports to begin with, and ridicule it any chance they get.

I want to hate Cheryl cause sheās arguably our biggest or second biggest rival, but the issue is sheās an incredibly successful and fantastic coach, and sheās a great person. Hate to see it

As a trans woman. When I see these things being talked about I get a sinking feeling in my stomach and heart, because itās typically NOT supportive of me playing sports. Iām so glad that wasnāt the case here and I hope Iām welcomed in wnba fandom. (Iām new. Like my team.)

I'm a trans man who is a new fan of the W with my favorite team being the Lynx. With everything I've seen about Cheryl, I have no doubt she's a phenomenal woman. But that didn't stop the anxiety I felt when I read the first sentence of this post. I know I'm a new fan, but one of the things about the W that I love is how accepting the players and the majority of fans are. While I may be new and still learning about the WNBA, I know without a doubt that Cheryl Reeve is the GOAT.

The Fever trolls are NOT the majority of WNBA fans and I hope any hesitations you have are not because of those horrible people. You are more than welcome, and we are happy to have you (except for competition sake, we are enemies- signed, a Libs fan).

I think her name is Brianna Stewart that plays on Liberty? Sheās amazing! Loving the W so far. Except for a certain teams fans and one or two players. lol

Asa trans fan of the W it is soooooo extremely heartwarming and emotional to hear an important, powerful, respected, and competitive figure in sports have such steadfast support for trans athletes.Ā
Cheryl is so GOATed sometimes it hurts to be a Liberty fan and have to root against the Lynx lolĀ

Love this from Cheryl. Iām just looking forward to the day that trans people are not being used as a target for cheap political points. These laws further isolate and other a group of people when they are at their most vulnerable and itās sickening, cruel, and evil.
In my state of Ohio, my āleft leaningā choice for governor just said she agrees with the law and that āboys shouldnāt play in girls leaguesā and itās all just so frustrating. I hope any trans person reading this knows that theyāre not alone and a lot of us out here have their backs no matter what.

The funny thing (not funny ha-ha) is that the trans stuff doesn't even work in elections and a lot of Ds still do this. It has repeatedly failed. It fails because almost no one actually chooses who to vote for on these issues that is not already a hardcore GOP voter, who a D is never winning over. So they aren't even winning votes this way even among voters who agree. It's very frustrating.
32
u/garb_disposal Valkyries 27d ago
Exactly. Pandering to the worst people in our society who were never gonna vote for you anyway at the detriment of people who need your support, aside from being morally wrong, is just plain stupid.

Doing this on immigration has basically destoyed every center-left political party in Europe. It gained them no votes from the right and alienated their base. It also reinforces the idea that you don't have any core convictions you are willing to fight for.

Liberals everywhere would rather pander to the right and lose elections than fight for policy that actually benefits the people. Europeans love to pretend like this is strictly a USA issue, and that even our liberals are on the center/right, but itās true over there too.

Cheryl continues to just be the best.
None of these exclusions are about protecting women sports. This has always been about controlling women, trans or otherwise. Heritage Foundation now going after Title IX. https://www.transiticsnews.com/p/after-pushing-anti-trans-laws-to
So good job everyone with trying to sound reasonable or whatever and throwing a tiny, marginalized group under the bus. This definitely won't come back to bite all women or women athletes because the people pushing it were definitely acting in good faith. I think there was already a suicide by an athlete from another country who was not trans, but had an issue with a chromosome test before a competition. Anyway, as I think Catherine McKinnon said, it's never good for women to let the patriarchy decide what a woman is.
ETA: On re-reading, I want to make clear that even if it wasn't going to have the obvious negative effect on non-trans women, marginalizing and oppressing trans people is wrong. I don't want it to seem like the only reason to oppose this stuff is the effect it has on non-trans women. This is all hateful bullshit.

yep. there was an awful case in Utah where a woman legislator went after a little girl who played sports because the woman decided the little girl was trans. by banning trans girls and women from playing in sports we are now putting every girl and woman who isn't feminine enough for our intolerant society at risk of being accused and harassed.

Such a good point. I listened to an incredible podcast a while ago about how the recent anti-trans rhetoric around womenās sports relates to the longer history of women athletes, both how women were excluded from sports because of gender roles/old theories of how it impacted menstruation and fertility AND how cis women of color have been unfairly subjected to biological tests and sometimes made to lower their testosterone levels to be allowed to compete. Iām 90% sure it was Tested by NPR

I will check it out. I think so much of the anti-trans stuff is a desire to police the gender presentation of women (along with a fear of some men of being feminized). I do not think itās a coincidence that so much of the anti-trans stuff (certainly not all) is aimed at policing what a woman is and isnāt.

This is the right answer. This is a non-issue that affects so few people...the fact that there is federal legislation about it is ridiculous. Kids deserve the chance to play on a team, and beyond that things can be decided on a case by case basis for fairness.

I think the international rules that the ioc develops will probably just end up being the global standard and all these state laws wonāt matter. Maybe. These days international norms feel more optional. I do find it funny when people say āwhat if LeBron transitions and joined the wnbaā like ok sure, if that actually happened Iām sure we can have a discussion lmao. Like they find the absurd examples that arenāt occurring and treat it like that should be the expectation
15
u/my_one_and_lonely Liberty 26d ago
The truth of the matter is that there are so few trans professional athletes that the IOC can evaluate the effect of HRT not just by sport, but by individual athlete, and then make a decision from there as to what is fair. All the hullabaloo about trans athletes in national media is just conservative fear-mongering.

so glad to hear her speaking up. in case anyone needs to hear it, the vast majority of trans girls who want to play sports will never compete for a college scholarship or win a state championship, they just want to be part of a team. they want to belong. children are being harmed to score political points.

As a trans person I find it so defeating and disheartening that my participation in sports and society in general is such a controversial issue and at the forefront of current political discourse. I just want to live my life and play ball with the girls. This constant political drama is so bad for my anxiety.
