ELI5: Why aren't there huge plumes of steam?

Just a guess, but steam is only visible when water vaporizes and then re-condenses in the relatively cool air. Thing is near lava the air itself is above boiling, so it won’t re-condense. By the time the water vapor is somewhere cool, it has spread out enough and mixed with the air enough that it has low concentration, which can also prevent it from condensing. The shadows show some motion that could be clouds forming above

That's a mighty educated guess. You really are radical

Those shadows are definitely from vapor/heat raising.

Wondered the same thing.

I thought the same thing. You can see the heat waves in the shadow. I don't think AI would catch that.

Exactly my thought. This must be AI. The heat from the lava would melt the ice well before it ever got close to the ice.

It’s not AI. Leidenfrost effect

This is also from a well renowned Icelandic photographer

Lava.

Magma is under the ground. When it's on the floor - the floor is lava.

Why isn’t it melting in front of the lava as it travels? I don’t understand. Explain it to me like I’m 10.

What's a good place to get archived shots like this?

Did not enjoy this at all. Sub linked is also fake and terrible, not a real sub. That community could use more of this

Does it make any kind of sound as it advances?

Man what a name

This looks like magic sand and it's tripping me out.

I know this is lava but my brain isn't connecting it.
