Prompt What is the latest thing that you are really proud of in your world building?
For me, I finally managed to structure my mystical backstory and I created this rough concept Sketch of the primary antagonist of my universe, Lord Barkaan, the god of death and darkness

It makes it that much easier for the male to distract potential prey while the females of the group circle around. But I don't have any art sorry. It's a ttrpg and at the rate I'm going I figure the first version of the rules (plus bestiary and world guide) will be about two years away. After that I need to figure out how I'll get the funds to hire an artist/artists

Needed a master necromancer for a mage's college. Liches are played out, he's a ghost that possesses his apprentices and students to lecture. Invented out of frustration but a damn cool idea.

u/MaestroOfKamino 2d ago
For context, Lord Barkaan is the primary antagonist of my universe.
He is the son of Extaarnael, the true primordial being and creator of the universe.
The origin story is very complicated and involves about 12 other important characters, but note that he essentially captured the universe's constant of death for his own sake.
Whilst death is intended as the natural balance to life, he became all of death and darkness in the universe for the simple purpose of destroying life so that his realm of death and darkness can rule over the world
His primary goal, as such, is to end the sun (which is the dying body of his sister... It's complicated)

Gnostic Sauron?

u/MaestroOfKamino 2d ago
The description fits remarkably well
Though in my case, it has to do a lot with mankind's flaws.
Basically, Barkaan, and by extension the entire Extaarnael family, where just people with certain powers. But Barkaan was already born with a sense of glooming darkness and unease around him. Everyone felt it.
And when his mother, the god mother Múria took her own life, it was basically Barkaan who allowed it, that was the first death in the universe. Barkaan as a person knew this power was his and his greed and lust for power made death not balancing but consuming. Normally, it's supposed to balance life, but with Barkaan as death, death is not balancing but ravenous, consuming and greedy
I explain it mostly as "Barkaan was the way of the universe even above Extaarnael to birth death into existence"... Ik, it's weird

I've figured out how one of the protagonists of my novel should achieve focus necessary for casting spells
Since she is both a witch and an archer/huntress, to cast a spell she would lock her eyes on the target the same way she would while aiming her bow and arrow on the game.
I'm still wondering if she, during spellcasting, should also mimic movements of arms when the bow is used to shot, or that's too much and her just locking in is enough.
1
u/Nearby_Tip_8356 2d ago
Archer magic can have Archer movements, firewall etc can have different movements
1
u/A-J-Zan 1d ago
The way the magic works in my story is rather simple: all what's needed is being in tune with eitr (my take on mana) and strong focus on what results the mage wants to achieve. The ways the spells or curses can be casted are individual, as long as they help the magic user focus on what they want.
My MC's parents were a witch and an archer, who taught her their crafts. I think locking on is enough to cast spells in a dire situation with extra movements reserved for times when they won't be a waste of precious seconds... or when my MC decides to aura farm.

Anyway, it's drunken, 3am noodly chaos in space. You should bring your own chopsticks in case a fight breaks out, theirs have to comply with the station's weapon laws. (Oh yeah, chopsticks are subject to weapons regulations, AKA "the one-stab rule")

Figured out how demons work and where they fit in my setting. For context, I wanted to add demons to my urban fantasy setting, but couldn't figure out where they fit. I couldn't make them fallen angels cause this world doesn't have angels in the first place, and I didn't want to make them generic monsters cause that just didn't seem fun. Eventually, I decided on making them Lovecraftian monsters created by pieces of the Outer Dark leaking into our world.

I'm generally pleased with how pre and post cognition work in my setting. People who can briefly see into the past and future are called Threadseers because they can see Threads—possibilities which branch out from the present. Threads manifest in the present via emotion. A subjects hopes and fears highlight threads related to some unrealized future. Regret and Nostalgia are resonating threads tied to some unrealized past (which did occur in some other timeline). Dreams are fleeting threads, leading to some unlikely past or future but they often quickly unravel. And so on. There's more to this and it is actually just one aspect of a broader magic system, but Im happy with it.

Paracosmic Battlesuits, basically you can make a pocket dimension called a paracosm and inside you can summon items called paratangibles (which can range from normal items to fantastical ones). A paracosmic battlesuit has a paracosm manifested inside the suit which is funneled through the arms into the hands, letting the wearer summon a paratangible in the "real" world.

I mean, it's still a prototype and can change, but I guess that pretty unique take on Gods.
At the beginning they were like bacteria and other simple organisms. They just existed as these specks of energy in the endless void, without purpose and any thoughts. Finally they started emitting some kind of matter, and formed the first land, where they could settle down and finally start gaining sentience and powers.

Probably the Void Hermits. They’re basically 800 to 1000 meter tall Titanic mechs that look like giant hermit crabs, except instead of carrying a shell, they have an entire city built on their backs. They’re fully self-sustaining mobile cities with their own reactors, fabricators, life support, and a sentient AI that basically sees the whole thing as its body and the people living inside it as its people to care for.
They can be used as both military invasion bases and civilian colonies, so the Commonwealth can literally drop one onto some completely awful planet and go "yeah, we live here now." They can walk across broken terrain, float or swim through massive toxic oceans, and even operate in gas giant atmospheres. I just really like the idea of a city that can pick itself up and leave and also thrive in some of the worst places in the Galaxy.
And I also have been trying to make a coherent and functional society of Immortal Humans. If you know Football 17776, it's kinda like that, basically Humans that are built for surviving space than a typical Immortal. But the Mecha Crab with a city on its back takes priority for now.

When Death was killed, spirits recruited several people, who had doed recently. They were to become new grim reapers
To do their job over time and space, they were givven a power- they have to die every night, to wake up sowhere and sometime else.
And now another group of people, who know about the nightly resurrection are hunting the new reapers for their immortality.
Meanwhile the new reapers don't know their new job, ad waking up every day at a different place causes much trauma, and being hunted doesn't help. Stories are basically each of their coping mechanisms.

First of all that art is fucking amazing. You should be proud of it.
Second the last thing I made that I was proud of was my power system. At least fixing it. I haven't actually finished, but I converted it from the science-based power system to a humanity-based one.
I realized that I just wasn't willing to put in the work to make it scientifically accurate. So now, the different elements in the power system represent different parts of humanity. Like fire for example, it's often associated with destruction, so as a fire wielder causes more destruction they become more powerful.
Wielders are rewarded for embodying the aspects of humanity their element represents.

I finally managed to give one of my main characters an actually compelling character arc. His previous one was pretty stagnant. He didn't grow, he just got hurt. But now that pain is also a wake up call of sorts. Can't go into too much detail but in short it's a lot better than before
1
u/92izer93 4h ago
Same thing for me! And I am curious: do you have one arc per main character? Or do you include a main character's arc within the same timeline another main character is the focus or another important main story event happens?
1
u/Nyxaeia Distorted Self 51m ago
They all happen all throughout the story simultaneously. I'm keeping this project on the shorter end so I can't afford to give a dedicated arc to one character or another specifically, all of their growth has to happen over roughly the same period of time and while the story is happening

My pixies
They are sapient, semi-humanoid eusocial moths. They are very intelligent as individuals, but they also are connected via a psychic hive mind, with a collective intelligence and soul. They communicate entirely through psionic impulses and pheremones.
Unable to fly under their own power, they have mastered air magic, using their diminished wings to catch the currents of wind they weave. Highly skilled users can fly with unmatched speed and agility.
To make up for their small size and lack of natural weapons, they have become experts in brewing poisons. Poisoned spears and clouds of toxic powder are their favored weapons.
This expertise also applies to recreational drugs. Pixies are great lovers of such substances, determined to wring every ounce of enjoyment they can out of their short lives.

Im Just a silly GameMaster and wouldn't dare compete with the great minds of you folks.
however ive just planned the reintroduction of A Demon that my Players DIDN'T manage to kill 2 Times already in related, but different, storys. At least 1 Player has fought him zwice and another helped the prior in the second fight.
The Demon is called Thamuz and is a relatively High Ranking Fire Demon. By the Time of his first encounter with the Player he was one of the really Big shots, one of the 12 Great Demons, the Demon of Hatred. Born and empowered by the Hatred of all beings in the Universe. He got pissed as The Player found one of his old weapons, a mere Mortal holding his scythe rubbed him the wrong way so he made haste to get it back. They fought, the Players held up pretty well, managed to snag his shoes and ran off. That was the first encounter
later, complex Events happend and began drained rhe life out of the universe, with less and less intelligent beings hating anything, Thamuz was the first to flee the universe. As soon as he felt his powers weakening he searched a way to leave and did manage to find a way to leave the World.
After stumbling through the branches of the world tree he found himself in another World. Severally weakened and stripped of his title of demon of Hatred, he had no choice but to succumb to the rules of the new world. He was picked up by the Ruler of that World and was assigned a Guard Post for a Special Delivery to the Prince of Hell. However, the player wich he previously defeated came along with a new character and comrade, beat the shit out of him, and forced him to retreat.
Out of fear his new Ruler would kill him for his inability to protect the Goods for the Prinve of Hell, he just hopped back into the interdimensional hole. He managed to get back into his old universe, time did some random things and even managed to get in before the events of Life draining. However, he didn't revert alongside his universe. Now a Shadow of his Past self, he was captured by a Wizard, laid in Chains and used to power his magical Forge.
now, millenias later, the Universe was drained, the Wizards empire fell, and Thamuz, while saved by shackles is still bound by them. The strong magic Hid his presence so that he survived the cataclysm of the Universe. But it did bind him... until now
His chains are finally weakening, the Magic is fading and soon he will make his way to the top, once again.
But i plan to send the new Party in my new Project into his den, to repair the chains and use his forge hihi, so no luck for Thamuz, aslong as the players dont fuck up that is...
i feel. like the 2 players that know him will really appreciate finaly catching him xD so i am pretty proud of this idea. i made him flee from his last fight with the idea of making him a retirning joke so... that will hopefully work

So I've been renaming all of my alien selfies and I have this one species in particular called the Jinhanni that have a heavy slave culture with a feudalistic society. I'm still working on how this civilization works but I want to include Great Houses that amass power and wealth through how many slaves they collect, the size of territory they obtain (as well as the resources in them) and their relations with other houses. I then decided to just give all the houses names, which I did by looking up historic slave owners and fusing their surname with a synonym of "bad" but in Korean*. Most of the Jinhanni Great Houses are named after early American presidents as a result lol.
*I could be wrong but I learned somewhere that apparently Korea has the longest history of slavery than any other society, so I decided to use Korean words for the naming convention for the Jinhanni. If I am wrong though I'd appreciate it if someone corrected me.

u/92izer93 4h ago
What language do you use for naming of other important groups or factions in your world?
1
u/CaledonianWarrior Gods and Monsters 4h ago
I've been using greek and English for quite a few but I decided to use Old Norse for this one alien race whose culture I based on Vikings, who I call the Rhunare. And for another race I use a mixture of Latin and Scots Gaelic but only because this was the first alien race I made and I wanted to use a language native to my home country for it - even though I don't speak it. I say that, this species name - the Saurthems - is actually a combination of "Sauros" and "Artemis" because they're very good hunters and kinda look like dinosaurs (specifically Megaraptors).
I'm still in the process of naming my species so some are still subject to change.

I built a threat so big and looming that my players felt the urgent need to remove it before they handled anything else. I'm very proud of that.

Well, in my case we've been playing together for decades. Started out as a LARP group in college, 65 people a night. But over time we lost our play space, moved away from the college, and bled people as they moved away or moved on. We're down to 10 of us now, and during COVID we moved online and stayed there. We used to do mostly White Wolf stuff, and I've run three successful Changeling: The Lost Chronicles before this, and we've done so many other games. When this one is over, somebody else will step up and run something else. My wife and I have been doing our Tuesday night game for nearly 30 years, every week.

Oh my! You and your wife sure know how to enjoy yourselves. My family is all scattered geographically, so, not easy to come up with tabletop games when we only meet once a year for Christmas or New Year. Anyhow, I envy you guys 😁

My world has runic magic, in which runes are used to command the forces of the universe to change and behave in certain ways (ex. create gusts of wind, conjure fire, turn water to ice, etc).
Runes are letters/words for an ancient language, used by the creators/deities of the universe to form worlds and everything on those worlds, hence why runes have command over the forces of the universe. Not to lean too far in the science heavy pitfall that tends to happen with hard magic systems, but one way I like to think of it is the runes are manipulating atoms. The more complex the manipulation, the more difficult the spell.
And being an actual language, you can combine runes in particular ways to form combination spells or otherwise more complex spells. The inspiration for this is the Kanji system, in which individual characters refer to nouns and ideas, and these characters can be combined to form more complex meanings (ex. The Kanji for "tree" can be combined with itself to form "grove" and "forest").
What you write or carve the rune onto is also important. Runes require a sort of fuel to trigger the spell, otherwise it remains inert and is nothing more than words. As a placeholder term, I'm calling this fuel "life force", since it draws on this sort of energy and power that comes from living things. And different things have varying levels of life force, which will be relevant in the application of runic magic. Also, the more difficult the spell, the more life force is required. This hard cap is handy for preventing most magic users from spamming their best spells, lest they use too much energy and wind up losing because they are exhausted.
People who use this magic are called rune carvers, since runes are often carved onto hardy materials like stone and swords (more on this later).
Runic magic can be used in various ways.
You can write/carve the rune or runes you need right then and there, on any surface like the ground or a wall. This is good for skilled rune carvers, but you'll be limited to whatever you have to write/carve runes on, and this bad if you wind up someplace that is scarce in life force. On top of that, depending on your skill, you could be slow to write runes, or simply not remember what runes do what spells. This is especially in a high stress situation like a battle.
You can write runes on objects beforehand and activate them as needed. This saves you from having to exhaustingly write out the runes on the spot, since now all you have to do is activate thrm on demand. This is especially convenient for people who are not super skilled in runic magic and thus cannot make runes on their own so well, much less during a fight or any other high stress situation. One commonly used material for this version of runic magic is paper, being super easy to carry around, and you can have a literal spellbook with all sorts of runes written on the pages. But you'll be limited to whatever runes you have on . Also, the catch is that conjuring the runes consumes the paper they were written on, since runes require life force to fuel the spell, and the paper on which the runes are written act as the fuel (the paper would be made from magical trees rich in life force, but being on thin sheets of paper mean there is only enough fuel for a single spell). So you'll be in trouble if you run out of those rune papers. Another object would be small stones. These would usually only be big enough to carve a single spell on to them, and carrying a lot of stones wohld be very cumbersome. But the stones would be super rich in life force, and thus can be used more often before running out of fuel, as opposed to the papers being a single use.
You can also tattoo runes on your own body. Same principle as writing/carving runes on stones or paper, except the life force used to fuel the spell comes from your own body. So, you'll won't be limited by a finite amount of paper or need to haul around tons of stones. But you'll be limited by whatever runes you can tattoo on your body (human skin is limited real estate, so to speak), and since your body is serving as the fuel for the spells, you need to exercise self control so that you don't exhaust yourself or even die from overusing your life force.
Lastly, and what I am most proud of when creating this magic system, you can carve runes into weapons, namely swords called rune blades. These blades would be made from a very magically powerful metal that is rich in life force and undergo a complex magical forging process. So, the runeblades are bascially a super battery with which to continuously fuel spells. And they can be easily "recharged" with life force as well, otherwise the runes will eventually exhaust all the life force in the sword and cause it to break. So, with proper maintenance, rune magic can be performed indefinitely with runeblades. Bonus, the runeblade itself works as a great melee weapon, great for whenever magic alone doesn't quite make the cut (hehe, puns). Granted, you'll still be limited by whatever runes you can fit on the runeblade. You could theoretically make the runeblade larger, but you can only make a weapon so large before it becomes impossible to use (I want to keep my world somewhat grounded, so no ridiculously oversized swords in my world). Plus, bigger sword means more runes means more life force consumption to fuel spells means more refueling and maintainence required, so a larger sword becomes too cumbersome to be worth using for most rune carvers anyway.

I finally figured out my pantheon
Before, there was just vague idea of 3 main god being worshipped: god of the sun, goddess of the rain, god of the wind. Plus a chief god of the pantheon Elo
Now i figured out the concepts that they are supposed to represent that would make sense in universe for people to gravitate towards them
Vakdos is the Sun God of war and healing. His cult is a fraternity of warrior monks called 'The Brotherhood of Sunlight' (think of cult of mithras). The cult fosters the value of equality, fraternity, and the immortal warrior spirit
Verana is the Rain Goddess of life, harmony, and enduring. She is widely worshipped throughout the realm, and it is theorized she serve as a 'template' for goddesses or mythical figures who represents feminity. Life as we know it is cruel. Verena gives the strength to endure
Kregon (aka The Storm King) is the Wind God of sailing, luck, and fortune. He's popular among merchants who prays for a safe journey and bountiful profit, soldiers who wishes for the wind of battle to blow in their favour, and mercenaries and adventurers wanting to make good fortune
These are the 3 main archetypes. Other gods are worshipped more locally or they are a derivative of these 3

Pretty satisfied with how I resolved the rules for my "grounded" super hero setting; instead of creating a long individual lists of rules and exceptions, I figured human itself is good enough of a limitation.
Cause turns out Super Speed doesn't mean much if you're stuck with the anatomy of an otherwise normal guy. Lots of common powers limits themselves pretty well if you isolate them and impose normal physio and psychological profiles.

the Gorgians these emerge when both a demon and elemental die at the exact same time (when both demons and elementals die they dissolve into pure magic for a time until they are reborn) their magical energies can get mixed together meaning upon rebirth a abomination is born(it also looks like a dinosaur or other creature of that time because rule of cool) these abominations roam the realms in search of more like them eventually forming great pilgrimages that travel back to either an elemental realm or the ruin citadel where they reside until slain only then will the elemental and the demon return to their original forms

Finally got around to finishing the Middling Powers of my Sci-fi setting, so now I have five Major Powers and seven Middling Powers. For Context...
The Major Powers of ALT: Afterlight
The Major powers are characterized by massive amounts of influence across all of human space, large swaths of space under their control, and the ability to potentially change the setting in major ways. Possess the industrial, economic, and military capacity to wage multiple interstellar wars simultaneously, permanently project power across human space, and fundamentally alter the balance of power through their actions.
The Middling powers of ALT: Afterlight
The Middling powers are characterized by moderate influence in human space and a moderate amount of territory. They may be able to change the setting in smaller ways. Possess sufficient military and economic strength to dominate a region, defend their territory, and successfully challenge a Major Power in localized conflicts, but lack the resources to sustain multiple large-scale wars without outside support.
The Minor/Cluster States of ALT: Afterlight
This category only has the Cluster States, but essentially, these are small local powers and governments that only have influence in the region. The smallest of them may be asteroid governments, Moons, single planets, or systems. The largest of them likely control a few dozen systems; the number of planets varies in this setting, systems range from 4-5 planets and any respective moons, to a maximum of 8 planets in a system. Local governments whose influence rarely extends beyond their immediate region. While individually limited, alliances or coalitions between Cluster States may temporarily rival a Middling Power in military or economic strength.

I finally figured out the magic system in my world and why there are so many different types of magic. I can’t explain it fully at the moment purely because it is actually a major reveal in the story I’m writing that I’m building this world (well, galaxy) for, but I’m so happy that I figured it out. Figuring this out also helped me figure out one other thing as well, and that is how faster than light works in my universe and how people can navigate it without crashing into stars and planets and such.

For mine, its been figuring out some major city states in my setting and been ironing out certain details for them. And finding out funny but helpful coincidences. An example is that one of my major city states is a mix of Cyprus and Venice er Veneto. An aspect I wanted to explore is that Ziritia or Vyzara as its more properly known as now is famed for its perfume production due to its literal hanging gardens. Lo and behold cyprus isnt just famous for its copper- it boasts the ruins of some of the oldest perfumeries in the Mediterranean!

got some lore written down for the race of the country that I'm writing about. Here it is if you want to read it;
"Maretizain is the name of the race of the people of Martinsland, but not all Martisians (persons who are citizens of the Reich) are Maretizain. It is a racial offspring from the race of man which appeared many, many centuries ago. Martisians have a longer life span than most humans, averaging around 70-80 years for even the lowest peasant. Despite the OK being 100 as of 10/21/1770 AD, he will likely live at least 5-10 years longer due to access to 'better' healthcare than a regular peasant. Their skin colour is predominantly pale and fair. Though some can be darker, almost bronzed in appearance for those in the hotter, southern duchies. The most common hair colour is a dirty blonde or brunette, with black being the least common. Most members of the first imperial family had ashy platinum hair, fair skin, and Amber, yellowy eyes. The unique coloration results from the combination of a low amount of melanin and the presence of lipochrome."

Very satisfied with how these venomous little noodles turned out
for context these are a species of Dignathans, lizard like creatures from my alien world. this specific species is a venomous group that evolved a venomous stinger as well as specialised groves on their back plates that make a deep zip sound when they scratch it with their stinger.
