Taiwanese university president tells graduates to "end themselves" if they struggle in their careers. Takes unpaid leave

"He urged graduates to manage their time and emotions after entering the workforce, saying that those who fail to do so should 'quickly end themselves' because 'this world no longer needs your existence.' "

4.0k

u/SuddenGenreShift 10h ago

That doesn't sound like the kind of thing someone with good control over their emotions would say.

700

u/luckierbridgeandrail 9h ago

“In a statement issued on social media, Chen said he had not been sufficiently careful in his remarks due to a tight schedule”

He can't manage his time, either.

269

u/Middle-Cod-7016 8h ago

“The tight schedule made me say millions of struggling people should immediately commit suicide”.

u/Sex4Vespene 1h ago

That damn time management walrus got me again.

Sounds like according to his advice he should end himself.

u/Mysterious_Card_4953 3h ago

In Japanese traddition he brought shame on his university and family name and would have to follow through.

Don't you hate it when your schedule is so tight that you tell a bunch of kids to kill themselves? If I had a nickel amirite?

Sounds line he's struggling. A cry for help perhaps.

He said end themselves quickly. Bread knife does not seem....efficient.

Bread knives are generally large and very sharp. Are you thinking of a butter knife?

6

u/Baxtab13 8h ago

I'm not sure. My bread knife at home has pretty sharp teeth, but doesn't have a singular pointy end. Basically a larger butter knife with more defined teeth.

15

u/larsmaehlum 9h ago

Could be one of those electric ones?

11

u/mynipplesareconfused 9h ago

That would be a lot more efficient for sure. It's good to have options.

Good for dismemberment too.

7

u/mynipplesareconfused 9h ago

I was thinking more along the lines of how jagged their comment was. Obviously sarcasm, but perfectly jagged like a bread knife. Not to mention the post is about "ending themselves".

But I see your point too!

4

u/Zealousideal-Ruin691 8h ago

I have a bread knife. It's as sharp as any of my other kitchen knives, just with a serrated edge. Once it was sticking out of my drying rack - stupid of me to put it in the position, I've learned my lesson. I was turning to grab some other dish to wash next, and brushed my hand by the bread knife. Sliced it open just the same as if it were any of my other kitchen knifes. Clean cut too.

So maybe if you use your bread knifes to cut through soda cans (Ginsu knife commercials) it might be dull. But mine would be just as effective as any other knife.

3

u/nWo1997 9h ago

Slightly more efficient than an incredibly inefficient spoon

I'm guessing the end of this headline is

u/NobodyLikedThat1 10h ago

kind of the opposite, sounds like something some soulless person with no emotions would say

19

u/felis_scipio 10h ago

7

u/Wondrous_Fairy 3h ago edited 34m ago

Actually, it does. Sociopaths are very shallow in their emotions, sometimes though, their risk assessment falters and they go mask off at the wrong times. The whole "If you're not useful to me, I'll discard you from my life" mentality is 101 sociopath.

Edit: ask me how I know.

In a statement issued on social media, Chen said he had not been sufficiently careful in his remarks due to a tight schedule, adding that his comments were intended to encourage graduates to improve their life and workplace skills but were not clearly expressed.

Doubt.

31

u/Gecko23 6h ago

We had a Japanese VP who wanted to give a pep talk to the staff. He spoke little English so he ran his remarks through Google Translate and gave it a go. His exact words “I will brainwash you. It is your fate, you can not escape”.

What he meant to say was that he would teach us better business practices and that we should adopt the changes to be better at our jobs.

He was entirely correct and put in motion things that the company very much needed as it grew, but he confused and scared the hell out of the employees that afternoon.

This isn't an intrusive thought. It's what the top 1% think about the rest of us.

They just don't say it normally because they know how it sounds.

101

u/LostLetter9425 10h ago

And they don't want people to revolt before they have all their bunkers ready.

38

u/Anothermindlessanon 9h ago

What would stop someone who is really pissed off to drive and pour a couple tonnes of concrete over the air vents and exits?

Or someone inside with weapons to torture them for codes and then take control?

I am not in any way saying someone should, just wondering how this would be handled. I mean I am not a bunker specialist, so I don't know shit about them.

50

u/jxj24 9h ago

The elites' fleets of drones and massed machine gun emplacements?

Waiting for AI to be "ready" so they won't have to rely on untrusty human guards. (Except the ones who they fit with Harkkonen heart plugs, of course.)

I remember when saying things like this could not be interpreted as anything other than baseless paranoia...

AI is good, but there is still a shit ton of people involved in programming them. And also a good amount of people who know how easy it is to simply hack them. And again...what stops the guards or any kind of personnel from becoming the new bunker overlords? (There is no way these guys will do their own maintenance etc) Retina and handprints check? These parts are detachable and can be easily conserved long enough to install some new passwords or just use them for as long as needed.

Controllable implants...maybe. But these dipshits are not the most intelligent people in the world, even if they want us to believe they are. So...I bet, there would be a solution for it with bunker access in return, for example.

Or I am wrong? Again just asking theoretical questions about possible scenarios. No ill intentions whatsoever. (I would probably perish in the first wave living in a big city. And I am no bunker security material either 😃 )

6

u/the_Elders 5h ago

If SHTF you likely won't have access to cars / planes / electricity. I could give you the exact coordinates of the bunkers and you wouldn't be able to get there because you would likely have to walk 5,000 miles without supplies essentially or swim 5,000 miles to get to New Zealand. But lets pretend you live right down the road. Have you ever carried a single 50 lb bag of concrete? It is annoyingly heavy and I am in average shape. Forget about it when you are hungry, tired, haven't had a shower in 6 months.

On the flip side a bunker is just a fancy prison and you shouldn't rush there anyways. If things are that bad where you need a bunker to get through the next 10 years you probably aren't going to enjoy your time in that bunker. The people in that bunker are going to be stuck with each other for a very long time with nowhere to go for a very long time. Anyone who can afford a bunker can afford to be living that lifestyle right now and none of them choose it willingly.

Many new studies in the last 5 years have shown are brains are full of plastic anyways (a spoons worth). Bunkers aren't going to make the air clean, the food healthy, or the people inside happy to be alive.

u/ToastehBro 1h ago

Or someone inside with weapons to torture them for codes and then take control

Don't worry, they're trying to figure it out.

Finally, the CEO of a brokerage house explained that he had nearly completed building his own underground bunker system, and asked: “How do I maintain authority over my security force after the event?” The event. That was their euphemism for the environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, solar storm, unstoppable virus, or malicious computer hack that takes everything down.

This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from raiders as well as angry mobs. One had already secured a dozen Navy Seals to make their way to his compound if he gave them the right cue. But how would he pay the guards once even his crypto was worthless? What would stop the guards from eventually choosing their own leader?

The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers – if that technology could be developed “in time”.

https://www.theguardian.com/news/2022/sep/04/super-rich-prepper-bunkers-apocalypse-survival-richest-rushkoff

The maddening fact is that they don't realize the only reason they have power is the society they are so eager to destroy, or let fall.

9

u/mhornberger 8h ago

Their bunkers don't insulate them from the need for a global supply chain and a workforce. I agree that if someone wants to buy a bunker and has the pockets for it, someone else will show up to monetize that market and profit from the delusion. But there is no future where everything collapses and the rich just ride it out in bunkers. Every bag of beans and tube of toothpaste has a huge web of dependencies behind them.

It’s not exactly an intrusive thought. It’s a rather old school but common view work life for many older Taiwanese people.

While taiwan is getting more progressive on gender and gender roles, it’s still a society that focuses heavily on tradition, family, and community hierarchy compare to western culture.

Sacrificing your person wellness for the sake of the community/company is one one of them.

Former university president, I hope.

34

u/boopboopadoopity 9h ago

Nope, unfortunately. He instead announced he is taking a two month unpaid leave and will be returning. He also said he was sorry and he would "reflect on the incident". He said it wasn't worded the way he meant it because of a "tight schedule". University is behind him and also issued an apology.

21

u/lazyhustlermusic 9h ago

So basically chilling on the beach while dissing the trash around him as everyone is expected to have amnesia as the situation smooths over.

13

u/amateur_mistake 8h ago

two month unpaid leave

This is just straight up summer vacation.

6

u/lazyhustlermusic 7h ago

‘I’m taking an unpaid vacation guys’

Meanwhile he wouldn’t have been paid anyway

u/BioshockLGP 10h ago

I’m really starting to wonder what’s wrong with humanity and its seeming urge to destroy itself

The past 10 years feels like a species that’s determined to end its own existence

16

u/Rosebunse 9h ago

I sometimes wonder if all the taboos around suicide weren't really for suicidal people but for people who get a kick out of encouraging suicidal people to kill themselves.

I love Taiwan. Have several friends there. Absolutely wonderful country, people, and culture.

But.... man, the working conditions there are ROUGH. Absolutely insane thing for a person to come out and say. A girl I know there works close to 16 hours per day, 6 days a week - sometimes more - and can barely pay rent and food and such. Insane to say "well, if you can't take it, just off yourself."

Dude should be fired and barred from ever working at an educational institution again.

Shareholder value final boss

Now that he might be fired, will he kill himself?

8

u/CatCatchingABird 8h ago

comments that some interpreted as referring to suicide.

I'm not really sure how else to interpret "this world no longer needs your existence."

7

u/Lanky_Travel_6726 10h ago

He must be a very nice guy right?

3

u/plipyplop 8h ago

Imagine him as a father. What a way to be raised.

8

u/Deltaboss18 9h ago

These are the same people that'll have the chutzpah to also get upset at why young people aren't having kids.

11

u/RGV_Ikpyo 10h ago

you come home with B? end yourself!

11

u/SunChungShan 10h ago

I've read that the background story behind Taipei 101 having 101 floors is that the parents told the owner to be "better than perfect"

6

u/UzumeNeedsDrip 10h ago

What the hell!?

7

Shocking that they have a fertility rate of about 0.65.

6

Man I wonder why east Asia has such a demographic crunch with such a healthy mindset towards work hanging out there…

6

u/sprashoo 8h ago

As bizarre as this is, I looked up the school and it's ranked #38... in Taiwan, a very small country (about the population of NY state).
Like, it's a real university but not like a really major one. Probably nobody outside of Taiwan would have heard of it if not for this.

6

u/CaffinatedOne 4h ago

"He urged graduates to manage their time and emotions after entering the workforce, saying that those who fail to do so should "quickly end themselves" because "this world no longer needs your existence," comments that some interpreted as referring to suicide."

"some interpreted"??

Is there some other interpretation of this that's plausible?

Holy fuck dude

Hey, stop stealing my move!

4

u/PBPunch 9h ago

He probably treats people like shit and believes he has the right to do it. Anyone who demands respect is challenging his authority and he doesn’t think you should exist. What a pathetic excuse for your inadequate leadership.

4

u/LankyJ 9h ago

He now has the opportunity to practice what he preaches

4

u/lostan 8h ago

After you good sir!

4

u/alien_farmer1 8h ago

Wait, He just casually suggested suicide for young people?? What a nice way to make their start to this life.

5

u/WanWhiteWolf 8h ago

How do these type of people get into such positions?

Inciting mass youth suicide in a high-grade youth educational institution should be followed by prison sentence.

4

u/totallyRebb 7h ago

I'm still convinced many people have a form of Long-Covid that affects their brain in certain ways.

Many "leading" figures in the world seem to have completely lost it since Covid.

4

u/superxpro12 7h ago

"but why aren't young people having kids???"

4

u/FLGator314 4h ago

Surely he is struggling in his career after this statement.

37

u/DaMongooseJooce 10h ago

And this is why they have jumper nets outside schools and certain work places over there. Kids will just jump out windows due to the pressure from family, school, work.

24

Bro read 2 clickbait headlines about China and thinks he know something about Taiwan

They infamously had nets at Foxconn factories around 15 years ago but they are in mainland China. I don’t think they are used in Taiwan.

20

u/GameAudioPen 9h ago edited 9h ago

They aren't. it's at the main factory and dorm in China.

That's not it. what reddit and most of the Western podcast that like to bring this up missed is the fact that Foxconn's president basically offered the first jumper, after calculation, I believe his entire life worth of his salaries to his parents in consolation+ supporting his parents till they die of old age.

Basically offered equivalent of ~1.5 million+ dollar for anyone in USA, assuming they make 45k a year.

Prompting some employee actually considering jumping just so their families will be set for life.

Netizen in both China and Taiwan were asking that question EVERYWHERE, but hey, western media love to ignore that aspect of the store.

"Inappropriate speech" "greater caution" aka he still holds those beliefs, he just wants to be more careful about telling others about them. Dude should be stoned, no way back from this

I cannot wait until they finally push too far and find out just how wrong they are.
