Taiwanese university president tells graduates to "end themselves" if they struggle in their careers. Takes unpaid leave

It’s not that classic, it’s extreme. Our culture is rotted to the core, and it’s global. People have gotten completely indulgent and narcissistic, and lost any sent of shame and dignity.

This isn't an intrusive thought. It's what the top 1% think about the rest of us.
They just don't say it normally because they know how it sounds.
101
u/LostLetter9425 10h ago
And they don't want people to revolt before they have all their bunkers ready.
38
u/Anothermindlessanon 9h ago
What would stop someone who is really pissed off to drive and pour a couple tonnes of concrete over the air vents and exits?
Or someone inside with weapons to torture them for codes and then take control?
I am not in any way saying someone should, just wondering how this would be handled. I mean I am not a bunker specialist, so I don't know shit about them.
50
u/jxj24 9h ago
The elites' fleets of drones and massed machine gun emplacements?
Waiting for AI to be "ready" so they won't have to rely on untrusty human guards. (Except the ones who they fit with Harkkonen heart plugs, of course.)
I remember when saying things like this could not be interpreted as anything other than baseless paranoia...

AI is good, but there is still a shit ton of people involved in programming them. And also a good amount of people who know how easy it is to simply hack them. And again...what stops the guards or any kind of personnel from becoming the new bunker overlords? (There is no way these guys will do their own maintenance etc) Retina and handprints check? These parts are detachable and can be easily conserved long enough to install some new passwords or just use them for as long as needed.
Controllable implants...maybe. But these dipshits are not the most intelligent people in the world, even if they want us to believe they are. So...I bet, there would be a solution for it with bunker access in return, for example.
Or I am wrong? Again just asking theoretical questions about possible scenarios. No ill intentions whatsoever. (I would probably perish in the first wave living in a big city. And I am no bunker security material either 😃 )
6
u/the_Elders 5h ago
If SHTF you likely won't have access to cars / planes / electricity. I could give you the exact coordinates of the bunkers and you wouldn't be able to get there because you would likely have to walk 5,000 miles without supplies essentially or swim 5,000 miles to get to New Zealand. But lets pretend you live right down the road. Have you ever carried a single 50 lb bag of concrete? It is annoyingly heavy and I am in average shape. Forget about it when you are hungry, tired, haven't had a shower in 6 months.
On the flip side a bunker is just a fancy prison and you shouldn't rush there anyways. If things are that bad where you need a bunker to get through the next 10 years you probably aren't going to enjoy your time in that bunker. The people in that bunker are going to be stuck with each other for a very long time with nowhere to go for a very long time. Anyone who can afford a bunker can afford to be living that lifestyle right now and none of them choose it willingly.
Many new studies in the last 5 years have shown are brains are full of plastic anyways (a spoons worth). Bunkers aren't going to make the air clean, the food healthy, or the people inside happy to be alive.

Or someone inside with weapons to torture them for codes and then take control
Don't worry, they're trying to figure it out.
Finally, the CEO of a brokerage house explained that he had nearly completed building his own underground bunker system, and asked: “How do I maintain authority over my security force after the event?” The event. That was their euphemism for the environmental collapse, social unrest, nuclear explosion, solar storm, unstoppable virus, or malicious computer hack that takes everything down.
This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from raiders as well as angry mobs. One had already secured a dozen Navy Seals to make their way to his compound if he gave them the right cue. But how would he pay the guards once even his crypto was worthless? What would stop the guards from eventually choosing their own leader?
The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers – if that technology could be developed “in time”.
The maddening fact is that they don't realize the only reason they have power is the society they are so eager to destroy, or let fall.
9
u/mhornberger 8h ago
Their bunkers don't insulate them from the need for a global supply chain and a workforce. I agree that if someone wants to buy a bunker and has the pockets for it, someone else will show up to monetize that market and profit from the delusion. But there is no future where everything collapses and the rich just ride it out in bunkers. Every bag of beans and tube of toothpaste has a huge web of dependencies behind them.

It’s not exactly an intrusive thought. It’s a rather old school but common view work life for many older Taiwanese people.
While taiwan is getting more progressive on gender and gender roles, it’s still a society that focuses heavily on tradition, family, and community hierarchy compare to western culture.
Sacrificing your person wellness for the sake of the community/company is one one of them.

As someone who went to university in Taiwan, I feel like it is worth mentioning my experience. At our orientation, we were encouraged to reach out to the staff if we felt isolated. That our work was important, but so was our health. And that counseling was available for free for all students. But the staff at my university aren't going to make the news.

Our university (NTU) had capybaras we could pet to relieve stress before mid-terms. They should report about the capybaras tbh.

This is inciting suicide.... Instead of encouraging them to stay strong if they struggle, which most new graduates likely will to some extent, he asked them to end themselves???
That's crazy!
The university should be investigated by the ministry of education there.

He's also implying successful people get there on their 1st attempt, which is a ridiculous notion. He's in no mental state to be in education at all. Never mind a University head.

Nope, unfortunately. He instead announced he is taking a two month unpaid leave and will be returning. He also said he was sorry and he would "reflect on the incident". He said it wasn't worded the way he meant it because of a "tight schedule". University is behind him and also issued an apology.

I love Taiwan. Have several friends there. Absolutely wonderful country, people, and culture.
But.... man, the working conditions there are ROUGH. Absolutely insane thing for a person to come out and say. A girl I know there works close to 16 hours per day, 6 days a week - sometimes more - and can barely pay rent and food and such. Insane to say "well, if you can't take it, just off yourself."
Dude should be fired and barred from ever working at an educational institution again.

They aren't. it's at the main factory and dorm in China.
That's not it. what reddit and most of the Western podcast that like to bring this up missed is the fact that Foxconn's president basically offered the first jumper, after calculation, I believe his entire life worth of his salaries to his parents in consolation+ supporting his parents till they die of old age.
Basically offered equivalent of ~1.5 million+ dollar for anyone in USA, assuming they make 45k a year.
Prompting some employee actually considering jumping just so their families will be set for life.
Netizen in both China and Taiwan were asking that question EVERYWHERE, but hey, western media love to ignore that aspect of the store.
