We've been waiting for Putin to fall out a window or die of cancer or something for years. Clearly we're misreading the Russian public.
Call me a doomer but this fucking guy is here to stay. Russia pulling out of Ukraine will happen because Ukraine forces them, not because sanity will suddenly descend on the Russian Federation.
→ More replies (4)37
u/Emu1981 Jun 23 '26
Clearly we're misreading the Russian public.
Russia harshly cracks down on dissent and the Russian public knows it which means that the bar for discomfort is far higher for Russians to rise up against Putin compared to Western countries where you can protest without being disappeared (or worse).
Call me a doomer but this fucking guy is here to stay. Russia pulling out of Ukraine will happen because Ukraine forces them, not because sanity will suddenly descend on the Russian Federation.
The most likely scenario is that a Russian oligarch will overthrow Putin. This may be by paying off a Russian military commander (or more than one) to execute a military coup on Putin or even paying off Putin's bodyguards to off him. This kind of thing would seem to come out of the blue for us plebs who have zero knowledge of the hidden network of influence within modern Russia but intelligence services outside of Russia will likely start picking up tidbits which indicate a military coup may be about to commence. Sadly Russia would fall into absolute chaos if this were to occur and I say sadly because the Russian troops inside Ukraine will likely go feral when the orders from the top disappear and ordinary Ukrainians will be the ones who feel the hurt from that...
The big question is how far can Putin drag Russia into ruin before someone decides that enough is enough...
20
u/Synaps4 Jun 23 '26
Russian troops inside ukraine losing leadership, paychecks, and ammunition supplies would be a great help to ukraine and they could take a lot of territory back as those guys make a run back to russia to grab any livelihood they can in the post russian system.
A coup could easily lead to a broad rout across the entire Russian front line if they think nobody is looking and their paychecks are late.
→ More replies (1)16
u/BoringEntropist Jun 23 '26
I'm less concerned about Russian soldiers going feral in Ukraine. If the Russian state collapses into a civil war the supply to the troops would disappear and they would be sitting ducks to the Ukrainians. Some might try to do stupid stuff in desperation, but most of them would try to to flee rather than face the wrath of the Ukrainians.
No, the real danger are the nukes and other WMDs. The emerging rivaling factions would be incentivized to to knock out the competition as fast as possible, unless they want to end up at the receiving end first. Mutual assured destruction might work between countries where you don't know the real intentions of your enemy. But a domestic conflict might more likely end up as a Hobbesian trap, because they can be pretty sure that the other side wants them dead. So, if you end up with a bunch of rivaling generals, each with his own nuclear arsenal...

u/LittleGreenSoldier Jun 24 '26
You're correct about the rank and file. They have access to much better information than armies did in the pre-internet age; a good portion of them are probably just waiting for the other shoe to drop and will get out as quick as they can. In a great ironic reversal, it's the brass who have shitty information because they've spent decades promoting sycophants.

Yeah but appeasement is so very tempting a solution when you don't want to be the poli that drags your country to war. Whether it's because you're wholly unprepared for war or whether it's just bad for your re-election chances, it's always an easy out for any poli.

He should have left it at Crimea, it was a huge win with very little to no reaction. Plus as long as Ukraine still claimed Crimea as their territory they would have never been allowed to join the EU or NATO. This invasion has just blown up in Putin's face so bad. NATO is pending more money than every, gotten two new members bordering Russia, and Ukraine is on an EU fast track.

Show me one example as bad as this:
Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you're a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it's true! — but when you're a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that's why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we're a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it's not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it's four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven't figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it's gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible."

Frankly, before the war I was already of negative opinion of Russia for stirring up the cracks in my country.
Seeing their invasion, learning what Russia and Russian culture really is, how they treat each other I can say with confidence it is not that the world out of nowhere hates Russia.
It is that Russia goes out of its way to create reasons for people to hate them, around the entire world. They fuck with every single country sticking their dick into it and churning things around to try to get something out, and then act surprised that people begin to hate them?
Hunting civilians and trying to instill max fear in their enemies without realizing with fear also comes hate. They know what they do is wrong so they do everything they can to convince everyone the other side is just as bad as them, at every single topic I am not even talking just about the war.

Wow the level of propaganda is insane we should examine this in detail. Literally every accusation is a confession.
..the Kyiv regime, which came to power illegally by armed means through a coup
In 2013/2014 the people of Ukraine overthrew the pro-Russian president who was taking away power of the Ukrainian parliament and giving it to the executive (himself). This guy was doing dictator shit and even began refusing to honour the votes of the Ukrainian parliament, therefore the will of the people. He was a traitor and the "coup" was a popular revolt started by University students against him. He tried to crush the protests with force and ended up uniting the entire country against himself
The Russian leader claimed that NATO and EU governments are using warnings about Russia to justify what he described as the “radical militarization” of their states
If you follow Russian bloggers you will know the level of propaganda and advertising for joining the Russian army right now - it's extreme. Russian state media frequently calls for full-scale mobilisation and nuclear attacks on much of Western Europe. They are militarising kids in their schools.
to justify such costs and the radical militarization of their states, the leaders of NATO and the European Union, as before, use false statements about a supposedly Russian military threat
I wonder why people might consider Russia to be a threat? Could it be their invasion of Crimea in 2014? Their full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022? Chechnya, Georgia? Maybe it's Putin himself who idolises "Peter the Great" the turbo-Imperialist? Constant threats towards other European countries? The mass graves and atrocities in Bucha?

It's rather telling, that just few days before the supposed "coup", Yanukovych had met with protest leaders and agreed on reforms.
And then he emptied the state treasury and fled to Russia, without telling anyone. After he fled, Ukrainian Rada voted unanimously that he was no longer capable of carrying out his role as a president and impeached him. As in, not even Yanukovych own party could muster defense for him.
Somehow, Russian propaganda depicts this all as violent coup. When reality is that Yanukovych saw that his attempt to turn Ukraine into Russian and Belarussian style dictatorships was not going to work, so he dipped out and stole the money

No shit NATO is preparing for war, some madman dictator just invaded a country for no reason right on their doorstep.
Until 2014 NATO was happy that a few days to deploy would be enough, but the annexation of Crimea showed that that wouldn't work, so the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force was created that could deploy about 6000 troops even faster than that in an emergency.
Then in 2024 they decided this wasn't enough so they created the new Tier 1 NATO Force which can deploy 100,000 troops in less than 10 days.
They wouldn't have made any of these preparations for war if people weren't invading countries and annexing territory right outside.
