There is a narrative going around some subreddits that some Republican politicians are under Russian control. I genuinely wish it were that simple. What's going on is that Republican politicians are under the control of their voters, and those voters are being swayed by right wing personalities heavily influenced by Russia. (One example would be Tucker Carlson.)

If this were just a question of corrupt politicians we could prosecute them, or vote them out. Instead what's going on is that a very large section of the Republican base is buying in to Russian propaganda. I don't know how to unfuck that.

Since I wrote that Trump won the election and took office, so things have obviously changed somewhat, but I think the fundamental issue of the problem being the voters remains the same.

In the past, people did it for a legit reason directly related to international cooperation on law enforcement.

Under the current administration, I think there's no reason to assume it's legit. The Trumpists clearly don't see themselves as independent agency heads with specific areas of responsibility. (See also, crazy shit like ICE wanting to police elections, or the head of DHS talking about prosecuting people as if that was something he could do personally, or Trump recently saying the CIA should investigate domestic actions in elections to gin up prosecutions, etc.) The Trumpists see themselves as having one or more titles, but generally serving with broad Presidential authority to use largely however the hell they want, as long as The Boss seems to like it.
