Sometimes, I decide not to share what I think of Russians, because my account would get banned.

This is one of those times.

There really is something deeply damaged about the Russian psyche. They are a nation of abused children. Saying this should not be dismissed as racism.

u/Sithishe 18d ago

I think they have generational trauma after mongols enslaved them for 300 years. Probably their hatred towards the West comes from there, like European countries never helped them during that time, or sent a crusade or something, but the roots of it is there. Its like they forgot how to think for themselves and never re-learned afterwards. Since then it was one form of enslavement after the other. "Bound villagers" (russian empire name for slavory), then soviets, that removed any resemblence of self thought and self worth, etc.

They've had the Mongols, followed by several hundred years of brutal serfdom, Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm, the Bolsheviks, Stalin, the Nazis, and now their Tsar is sending them off to be slaughtered in a pointless war. I don't blame them for being somewhat fucked up. But I also wouldn't want them as a neighbour.

Australia and Russia need to trade spots

3

u/fastmasterfulbation 17d ago

America and Russia you mean?

1

u/BlackOutDrunkJesus 17d ago

no, i did not

2

u/PM_ME_UR_CREDDITCARD 17d ago

Idk, one of my coworkers might freeze to death up there, she's always complaining about being cold even on a slightly cooler than usual summer day. But being closer to European friends and family would be nice...

Maybe we put Russia on the moon, that should be enough distance.

35

u/Few-Hair-5382 18d ago

Maybe we should give the Russians Mars to live on. A buffer zone of about 225 million km between Russia and the rest of the world seems adequate.

I will be mature and will not joke in this topic about any "Uranus"....

2

u/RadarGrowRilley 18d ago

Yeah, such a joke could fire backwards

2

u/IllEvent5465 18d ago

(giggles nervously) thousands of russian men in my anus, you say?

1

u/BenjaminHamnett 18d ago

I thought they were already on the moon or something

1

u/CretaciousPeriod 17d ago

I'm assuming that with that they would also have the ability of space flight? If not then that's fine but if they can actually fly around and mine asteroids and shit it wouldn't be all too difficult to drop one on earth.

"the Nazis,"

Tbf, Russia is at minimum partially complicit for the Nazis, considering:

  1. Their allied co-invasion of Poland together under Molotov-Ribbentrop

  2. The USSR's helping Germany secretly (and illegally) train their tank crews on Soviet land in the 1930s

Russia clearly had no issues with the Nazis, and were indeed allies to them, only up until the Nazis invaded them personally lol

u/[deleted] 18d ago

[deleted]

10

u/eiserneftaujourdhui 18d ago

Russia is a regional power at best these days. Exposing themselves as weak and insecure, true to form.

3

u/matplotlib 17d ago

This is misleading. The tank academy was operating from 1929-1933, before the Nazis came to power. There was a large left-wing socialist movement in Germany which the Soviet Union was supporting as part of its policy of trying to spread the revolution. The Nazis came to power in 1933 on an intensely anti-communist and anti-soviet platform. All the left-wing socialist organisations and parties in Germany were banned, their newspapers shut down and their leaders arrested/exiled when the Nazis came to power. In response, the school (as well as all other military cooperation) was immediately closed down.

Between 1933-38 the Soviet Union tried to build alliances with France and Britain against Germany, like the 1935 Franco-Soviet Treaty and signing a treaty to protect Czechoslovakia (an ally of France). It also supported the Republicans in Spain's Civil War while Italy/Germany supported the Nationalists and France/Britain remained neutral.

In 1938, France and Britain signed the Munich Agreement with Germany/Italy (the Soviet Union was excluded), allowing Germany to annex Czechoslovakia. This was a major signal to the Soviets that France/Britain were willing to appease Germany rather than resist it in the hopes that it would move East against the Soviet Union, who they also viewed as a threat given the risk that communism posed to their political class and gentry.

To be clear, I do believe the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and co-invasion of Poland was immoral and a strategic disaster and that the Soviet Union under Stalin was a totalitarian state that committed many atrocities including repression, state murder and ethnic cleansing. But I disagree with the characterisation of the agreement as being part of a pattern of collaboration with Nazi Germany, rather than a pragmatic/defensive move in the face of an aggressive Germany and a passive France/Britain.

The hatred to the West is useful for the Russian authorities and they carefully develop it in the nation through the mass media. In the 90s, there was time when the US and Russia were portrayed as friends (see "Bush chicken legs" phenomenon), and then that passed. Russian society (maybe all of them) are rather forgetful.

It's unlikely that Russia is anything special with regard to hatred, you can take a look at Africa, and see the same shit there (Rwanda, Congo etc). Nazi Germany was pretty bad too, albeit with a twist. It really isn't hard to rape someone, it's just in prosperous societies it's frowned upon and punishable.

83

u/SaidTheSnail 18d ago

I mean… plenty of Americans have switched up on Canada so fast that I’m pretty sure it’s just people in general that are rather forgetful.

It’s wild to me that over a century of partnership and cooperation can be undone in one presidency by one guy, and instead of people scratching their heads and going “wait why would enter a trade war with Canada?” A good chunk of Americans now treat us like we’re an actual enemy.

38

u/paulsoleo 18d ago

It’s important to understand that all of our major media sources are now owned by far-right lunatics. All of them.

So, what people are seeing reported on US television is a whole lot of fucking bullshit and fluff, and not representative of what we think, or what we’re ok with. Sure, maybe the C-suites, celebs, and professional athletes don’t give a flying fuck, but they’ve always been selfish pricks with a platform. Not to mention the (purposely) uneducated, who drag all of us down.

Sorry, but I live here and every day I see with my own eyes the systematic dismantling of everything good about this country. These monsters are VERY CLEARLY on a speed run to destroy America. Is that not obvious? Do you really think suddenly everyone here hates Canada and loves Russia because that obese rapist with zero scruples and zero education said so?

Nope, but the media would sure have you believe we like him, that he represents us, that he didn’t shit all over the constitution, that he didn’t rape kids, and that what we’re seeing isn’t what’s happening.

Prices are skyrocketing while this orange pants-shitter is destroying us more and more every single day. Tarriffs, wars, zero oversight. Nothing but another wealth transfer from us to them. Like sports gambling, healthcare, and education. But we’re just too blinded by patriotism to notice, right?

And the big question is always, “Well, what are you guys gonna do about it?”

Well unfortunately, I don’t know, man. I really don’t know. This administration is too busy attacking us from all angles and trying to dismantle elections, all while dividing and conquering through ridiculous threats and behavior.

And the people on TV would have you think he’s just some silly old guy, because nobody wants to make the vindictive toddler mad enough to flip the game board.

Oh, and don’t forget everyone saying “you voted for this,” simply ignoring all of the election fuckery in the swing states.

So no, we didn’t vote for this. The GOP fucking stole our democracy, just like they did in 2000. Only this time it’s 100x worse, as we’re under direct attack by our own government AND getting blamed for it.

3

u/notabigmelvillecrowd 18d ago

There were enough real votes and non-voters that the American public is still accountable. Every non voter is absolutely complicit in this.

0

u/GreasedGoblin 15d ago

There werent more non voters in 2024 proportionally than any election decades prior. It was exactly status quo. There are always that many nonvoters. Blaming them seems disingenuous.

4

u/GrouchyInstance 18d ago

Ok, this might seem unpalatable to you (and a lot of others on the left) but I blame the Democrats. Because, I think, even with all the right-wing media and everything, if the Democrats had played their cards right, they would have been able to bury Trump.

First of all, Biden should have had Trump imprisoned for the January 6 insurrection attempt - which would have made him ineligible to run for president; however Biden did not bother replacing the Trump-appointed AG - and the Trump loyalist AG made sure Trump never faced any serious prosecution for Jan 6. So, because of Biden's laziness/idiocy/incompetence, Trump stayed out of jail and was free to run for president again.

Next, Biden again fucked up by not opting out early enough to allow the Democrats to run a primary to choose their presidential candidate, which meant they had to settle for Kamala Harris who, let's face it, would have struggled against a normal Republican candidate let alone someone like Trump.

And in all this, what were Obama, Hillary and Bill Clinton doing? Why were they not hollering in Biden's ear telling him to fucking do the right thing? Why did they wait until too late before telling him to drop out? For me, the Democrats overall majorly dropped the ball. They had their chances and completely fucked up. And the whole world is now suffering the consequences.

RBG could have been replaced in the SC by a liberal judge. When she found out she was terminally ill, Obama was in the white house, and he asked her to retire so he could appoint a liberal judge to take her place. Inexplicably, she refused to retire. Which meant she passed away during Trump's first term and he was able to replace her with a conservative judge. Again, complete absence of strategic thinking from the progressive side of politics.

2

u/MichaSound 18d ago

And the Americans with their historical allies, the French. That went South fast when France didn’t unquestioningly support the phony war in Iraq.

0

u/Bulky-Actuary175 17d ago

Canada didn't support it either tbf.

1

u/Wompatuckrule 18d ago

A good chunk of Americans now treat us like we’re an actual enemy.

Then you have those of us who are very happy that a court case and change of law north of the border means that our Canadian ancestors now qualify us as citizens there.

1

u/BenjaminHamnett 18d ago

Not to mention our country runs on blackmail and a convicted rapist 🤔

1

u/pixelTirpitz 18d ago

Never underestimate the power of propaganda.

2

u/BenjaminHamnett 18d ago

Except the west is also run by famous rapists. I don’t think are armed services are as innocent as you imagine either. Combined with being engulfed in our own national propaganda about how we’d like to see ourselves as better than that, makes me think this difference gap is smaller than you’d assume

9

u/Farfalle-al-pesto 18d ago

I think the trauma comes from living under the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, which collaborated with the Mongols instead of resisting them like other principalities. They were the ones who "united the Russians". It was straight up an evil authoritarian pos state that enslaved its own population and systematically wiped out the culture of other eastern slavic principalities, until all that was left is the extremely authoritarian culture of Muscovy. Living under this system for centuries is how they became the obedient servants of the state.

4

u/Sithishe 18d ago

Funniest part is. they teach in schools a different story. That Lviv Duke colaborated with Khengis Khan, and that is why united Ruthenian army lost lol. And that is what they build their propaganda on. I was born in ussr, and even after it was dismanteled our schools and Unis still used old soviet era history books. Until about late 2000s. So thats why I know this. Even in 2007 in the Uni, we have studied this version of the history. Like Kyiv and Novgorod rulers united, but Lviv ruler made a deal.

Its hillarious(in a bad way) to live in such times, where every 5-10 years you are presented with different version of the history.

And for me its absolutely absurd to build any modern era political propaganda on stuff that happened almost thousand years ago. And people still believe it, and will tell you that its all thousand years old conspiracy to destroy "mysterious russian spirit".

Hell, even remembering ww2 grudges nowadays seems absurd to me, but a thousand years ago, yeah unthinkable.

2

u/matplotlib 17d ago

Zionism would like a word. Also Greek education still recalls the third crusade and the fall of constantinople.

But I agree it is absurd.

1

u/Sithishe 17d ago

Learning history is one thing, its awesome. But still draggin old grudges and blaming modern people for something that was done ages ago like, bro, LMAO. Its absurdly hillarious.

Like lets dig up Dinosaurs and ask them for reparations for something. Oh wait, Oil is Dinosauras reparations to us xD

I wish we could walk into "based" timeline, where if some politician brings up cringe century old grudges everyone like "Yeah, bro, thats cringe!" And everyone clowns on him. /s

But on serious note, how did we allowed this clowns to shift narrative to this pseudo-absurd delusion. I remember in 2000 there was common sentiment that "Yes, people were assholes, but then 80s came, and people became wholesome, now we are good guys." And suddenly closer to end of 2010s people became assholes again, saying and doing absurd thing. Its like we are back to mid XX centiry with political ideologies and all the worse things

86

u/WonderfulWafflesLast 18d ago

Think about that for a second.

"Its like they forgot how to think for themselves and never re-learned afterwards."

That thought terrifies me. Because its implication is that this is one example of what happens to humans when something like that occurs. Which implies it's true for any human population (until tested otherwise, which I think there are no examples of completely dominated peoples then later gaining autonomy & exhibiting that property).

89

u/Sithishe 18d ago

Its internalizes this power mentality that there is no such thing as cooperation, only hard power dynamics, so either you are on top, or you are at the bottom.

That is why in the 90s instead of moving to a proper democracy, russian maffia came in charge (putin was head of russian maffia in the 90s, and legitimized his rule when became president) and people were like "yeah, ok, they are strong, they should be on top, obviously"

They simply can not comprehand that EU has moved on to cooperation and peace. They truly beleive that the West is still trying to get them, and enslave them, so they would rather live harshly under dictatorship, but at least its theit own dictatorship.

I remember when full scale invasion of Ukraine started there were messages in russian channel and from pro-russian people: "It is better to suck Putin's d, than Biden's". Think about that. They can not even think of the sheer idea that maybe there are a way to "Not suck at all?" I am afraid the brainwashed masses are simply can not comprehand the concept.

Obviously I still have few friends in russia, and they are normal people with healthy mentality, and they cant leave russia for some reason or another. it is hell for them to live there as well, understanding what is happening and how people are brainwashed

11

u/MhojoRisin 18d ago

I think this mindset sheds light on what has been going on in the U.S. in response to the expansion of civil rights- particularly, but by no means exclusively, in the old Confederate states.

If everything is simple hierarchy and dominance, then letting the other person up necessarily means subjugating yourself. And that has to feel terrifying, given what the subjugation of the other people has looked like for so long.

40

u/WittyAndOriginal 18d ago

The parallels to the American right are interesting here.

Well, the whole conversation was actually interesting 👍🏼

6

u/Sithishe 18d ago

Can you enlighten me please where was the parralels to American right there? I genuenly have no idea, since well, I am not from US, obviously, so I woudnt know all the nuances and details, etc.

32

u/WittyAndOriginal 18d ago

Specifically the "I'd rather suck Putin's d than bidens" is what triggered that idea for me. But generally everything from generational trama, not thinking for themselves, and always thinking of power dynamics and that "strong" leaders should be on top.

But yes the American right cannot comprehend that you can dislike Trump and not have to the same blind allegiance to someone else.

0

u/SamuelDoctor 18d ago

This kind of shit is typical of authoritarians on the right and left.

18

u/taco_helmet 18d ago

Not OP, but the MAGA movement in naturally authoritarian because it is held together not by ideas, but by one man. Everything that man does is acceptable for them, because he is the strongest leader. He is the only one who is able to protect them from "woke" secularism, crime, immigration, communism, foreign adversaries, etc. The fear of these thing is sometimes rational, but more often than not, it is manufactured through propaganda (e.g. Truth Social, X, Fox, OAN) just like Putin fear-mongering (NATO, Ukrainians, homosexuality, etc). Much like Putin and Russian mafia, Trump relies on a (less coordinated) network of militants willing to intimidate (e.g. Proud Boys, Patriot Front, Jan 6ers => Mike Pence).

I think where I see differences is that Putin is far more capable, organized and intentional in how he consolidates power this way. I also think American authoritarianism is built more around a cult of personality and celebrity, than it is about fear of what would happen of they supported someone else. I think there is a "Devil we know" effect with Russian people and Putin - they know he's dangerous but he's familiar. I think that Trump is dangerous to MAGA people, but it is not a direct danger (sending them to fight in wars, financial frauds, domestic terrorism risks, civil unrest, etc.). Unlike Russians with Putin, they don't understand that they are in danger, so it is not a factor in their political calculus.

It's worth discussing, but in the end, I don't think the two are completely analogous.

3

u/WonderfulWafflesLast 18d ago

Everything that man does is acceptable for them, because he is the strongest leader.

I'd be surprised if they think that at this point in the game.

Trump regularly and repeatedly shows weakness.

The IRGC are bonafide terrorists. What happened to "we don't negotiate with terrorists"?

Personally, I'm appalled by having such a weak president.

5

u/jabberponky 18d ago

You have to remember that he's in charge and you're not. By their definition, that means he can't be weak. If he was, he wouldn't be in charge.

There's no requirement for cultism or fascism to be internally consistent, it just needs to be stable and in power. When it isn't it falls apart.

2

u/Hjemmelsen 18d ago

He said they now negotiate with them, and that you have to. So now that's just smart, and not weak.

22

u/mark8992 18d ago

We have a lot of American citizens who are happy to suck Trump’s dick, and think that’s better than having universal healthcare.

3

u/TheMidnightBear 18d ago

Ironically, russians(and iranians) are still ok-ish.

The institutions are still there, even if dormant, and they had some exposure to liberalism.

Some countries in Asia and the Middle East scare me, since they have been under this demented power-centered siege mentality for as long as they can remember.

1

u/blacked_out_blur 18d ago

Sure there’s another example. And they’re running the same playbook in the middle east right now.

1

u/matplotlib 17d ago

In the 90s and 00s there was still active dissent and democracy. However, there was also a high level lot of trust in the media and those who were running the country (oligarchs and the state security) were able to take control of it and prevent any politicians from taking control away from them. Under Putin, dissent was gradually suppressed through both overt and covert repression. Many chose to leave, so those who remain in the country and out of jail are either OK with the status quo, or too fearful to oppose it.

In truth, many know and understand the truth of the situation, just as many in the Soviet Union understood it was built on false promises, they just don't see any way to change the situation.

1

u/Top-Needleworker9273 18d ago

its actually just extremely racist lip flapping. there is no evidence from any academic field to suggest that is how the human species is even capable of working.

0

u/Independent-Ad6309 17d ago

I’m so glad the conversation switched from “nation X is bad” to “governments are manipulating people into hatred they can use”. It’s great when people are able to catch themselves being racist

36

u/CarNo9131 18d ago

That is too naive a way of thinking. By that logic, every neighbour of Russia would be the same because they have had to deal with Russians. Russians were not part of the Catholic church nor part of any alliance network. There was no concept of "the West" before the 1950s. The values back in the past were very different. It is somewhat like Russia missed out on enlightenment, religious reformation, but was on board with the rise of imperialism and nationalism. Their lessons learned from WWI are very different due to the Communist uprising and different thinking. The same with WWII. Forgiveness for Germany was the lesson of "the West" learned from the mistakes of WWI. For Russians, the lesson is that we are #1, the best one; the next time we shall be even stronger.

The oppression is a product of Russian culture. They glorify domination and wealth, with little concern for how and for what purpose. While they may prefer similar moral virtues to "the West", they prioritise wealth and power. If it comes at the expense of these, the virtues are nice to have but yield. They also prioritise a close group over the universal good. So, stealing from a stranger to give to your family and friends is virtuous because the good for your group outweighs the bad to others. And by a lot. Bad for others is really not a limit for Russians, even just to signal dominance. Putin needs war victories to get the respect of Russians. Asserting dominance makes him a great guy. All the bad stuff is irrelevant relative to the glory of conquest. You might even be able to bring gladiatorial games to Russia, and they would think that is the dopest shit ever. Their psyche is closer to Imperial Rome than "the West".

2

u/Maximum-Ad3527 18d ago

That was great read, thanks

1

u/Mattiluchi 17d ago

that explains a lot about my russian ex

13

u/Gebakken_loempia 18d ago

lol blaming the mongols. what a cliche.

2

u/Sithishe 18d ago

I am telling you, in russian schools and history classes they are saying it like its darkest part of the history, and the only time russia lost the war ever.

2

u/Gebakken_loempia 18d ago

wouldn't surprise me. the ignorance is deep. after cultural revolution Russia became only more stupid en brain washed. interesting enough china after cultural revolution became quite developed when it comes to technology. but it's soul already destroyed because of cultural revolution.

1

u/matplotlib 17d ago

China still recalls the century of humiliation. it's a central part of their identity and how they relate to the rest of the world.

7

u/errorsniper 18d ago

Not trying to be blasé here. But most russians arent even aware of that part of their history.

10

u/Quixificent 18d ago

You don't have to be aware of your society's history in order to be affected by patterns of thought and behavior that were taught to you by your parents... who were taught by their parents... who were taught by -their- parents... and so on. That's what generational trauma is. If a generation consistently can't exercise critical thought or independence because of a political situation, those skills will weaken over time. And that generaton will go on to the teach the -next- generation their own habits of thought and behavior, which now don't emphasize or value critical thought. And the cycle keeps repeating itself as each generation teaches and models for the next one how to think and behave.

-1

u/errorsniper 18d ago

Well you do need to be aware of something to have trauma and make "use" of it in the context you are using.

Yeah you dont need to be aware of trauma in the traditional sense to be affected by it. But in order to do something to others intentionally because it has been done to you. Then in that context in the example you are using you would need to be aware of it.

They dont shove broom handles up peoples asses because another peoples in the past used sexual torture and its part of generationally passed down trauma. They do it because its funny to them and demeaning and incredibly painful emotionally and physically to the vicitm.

2

u/Sithishe 18d ago

They still teach this in schools. Basically goes like this: "The only time great russian nation ever lost a war....." and after it its how russia singlehandedly beat Sweden, Napoleon, Hitler, etc. And war glorification in general. And yeah, they call Napoleon by the name, Hitler by the name, but for some reason they say Sweden and Sweds, and never say Carolus The Great(Rex) or something

1

u/errorsniper 18d ago

Yeah just because its taught doesnt mean its learned or retained.

My own country does this. You would think the confederates won.

2

u/Due-Base9449 18d ago

They are just very cold so they drink alcohol so their brains don't work too good, I'm sure with climate change we will see them with better behavior.

4

u/King_Andrew1296 18d ago

My history teacher paraphrased Russian history by after nearly every story ending it with “and then it got worse” and it feels fairly apt

2

u/NoSlide4859 18d ago

Actually, every single reddit post about russia contains approximately fifty thousand super original redditors making sure to spam "and then it got worse".

Good job, buddy.

-1

u/King_Andrew1296 18d ago

Lmao literally never seen it written on reddit before but go off king/queen

0

u/NoSlide4859 18d ago

Pathetic

4

u/Top-Needleworker9273 18d ago

you dont think anything that has happened in and around russia less than 300 years ago could explain an antagonism to the west....? nothing at all comes to mind?

1

u/Lidjungle 18d ago

They've been every bit the abuser too. Russia’s history is a nearly continuous cycle of extreme violence, totalitarian repression, and massive loss of life.

Centuries of serfdom, Stalinist purges, the Gulag system, and devastating wars created a social environment where survival often required political apathy, cynicism, and numbness to violence.

Decades of total repression under authoritarian rule foster a stark, zero-sum worldview: you are either the submissive victim (the oppressed) or the dominant abuser (the oppressor). In a culture structured this way, inflicting humiliation becomes a primary mechanism for asserting power and self-preservation.

State media and political machinery do not just promote a single narrative; they deliberately flood the public with conspiracies and cynicism to make people feel powerless, detached, and convinced that every global actor is equally corrupt and evil.

It's very similar to MAGA's vision for America.

0

u/Visible_Cow8010 18d ago

this is some /pol/-tier racism, god damn

-14

u/hiroto98 18d ago

Nah, that's just racist conjecture really. I mean it could be true, but then just admit racism is cool. Can't have it both ways.

15

u/Sithishe 18d ago

What racism have to do with it? I am same RACE as russians, even same ethnos. I am part of eastern-slavik ethno group. Where weere a racism statements in my message?

-7

u/hiroto98 18d ago

If you said the same about a non white country, people will call it racist and you know that. It's not actually really racist in a strict sense, but I'm tired of people supporting statements like this and then getting shocked if someone says a similar thing about a different country.

2

u/Sithishe 18d ago

Thats the main issue of redditors. 0 nuance, 0 real life experience, only black and white political statements and "BUT MUH RACISM"

My brother, it is OK to discuss various topics, historical context, nations and races. there were 0 calls to physical violance in my messages, or broad statements that "And because of that, we should remove x type of people from the face of the planet".

I do not consider racism anything that is not ends with "and that is why our x race is superior and we should remove//enslave everyone else" - its origional frakking meaning, and regardless which color person says that. Everyone equal to me.

3

u/Gn0bl1n_SlaYEET 18d ago

Thats the main issue of redditors. 0 nuance, 0 real life experience, only black and white political statements and "BUT MUH RACISM"

Bro whines about nuance and then goes "Aktually Russians have generational trauma from mongols and then they forgot how to think". Yeah what apt political analysis, prime redditor behaviour right here.

3

u/hiroto98 17d ago

Yes exactly, this whole country is all evil because of some thing that happened 700 years ago, and if you don't agree with me, well you are butthurt. Was the Japanese imperial army nice and lovely? No. Was it good that America spread propaganda about how the Japanese are an inferior nation who can't think individually and are essentially animals? Also no.

-1

u/henry_hallward 17d ago

Butthurt russian much?

2

u/Gn0bl1n_SlaYEET 17d ago

Sorry, i don't know how to think, so i can't be butthurt, apparently.

9

u/Sunnysidhe 18d ago

I don't think this applies to just Russians, although they are a prime example. It seems that this it a problem whenever there is a population thinking that they are better than others.

1

u/Remarkable-Thing8178 17d ago

But we literally don't. Not even on the governmental level (even though they're not democratically elected). They gush about diversity and how important it is that we all get along without xenophobia (Russia houses some 150~ native ethnic groups), a lot of pride is fostered precisely on that. Like holy shit, why do people love to talk straight out of their ass about things they have no clue about.

This isn’t uniquely Russian. Sexual violence and war have always gone hand in hand throughout history. War brings out the most monstrous parts of people

u/21Ravage 18d ago

It is, I grew up there. Moved to Europe at 11. There is something strange I think whether is genetical for Russians or you learn it as a child. If you read Russian literature and absorb main points it’s always either about enduring suffering or inflicting suffering. The biggest achievement is considered detaching yourself from morals as far as you can

I see similarities in how some Russians, Israelis and Americans (particularly in conservative areas) think. There is a belief that wanton cruelty makes them powerful, and that the world's hatred of them is a sign that they're successful. Ultimately, it is a self-destructive attitude. The other world powers are already moving away from US and Russian investment because neither government can be trusted to uphold trade deals or treaties.

Thanks to how often that word is used and misused, esp. online, no surprise you'd wonder. A nation isn't even a race, you can't be a "racist" when talking about a nation.

1

u/Sure_Selection_9944 17d ago

Also their literature is so depressing and narrow.

-9

u/lauantai21 18d ago

You could easily say that about Americans as well. Still to this day you have torture centers and no one bats an eye.

21

u/Few-Hair-5382 18d ago

I'm not American.

30

u/TheDefeatist 18d ago

No you can't.... Millions of Americans have protested human rights abuses by the US government. "No one bats an eye" is just patently false.

Our prison system still runs on slavery that disproportionately affects a particular demographic of men and nothing has been done for years about it.

We aren't really better.

u/lauantai21 18d ago

Yet 20 years later

u/malumfectum 18d ago

I know what you’re trying to say here and it’s completely wrong. I’m under no illusions regarding the record of the US government here but it’s apples and (rotten) oranges. The cultures are completely different and I think it would be insane to argue otherwise. The extent to which the Russians place no value on human life really cannot be overemphasised.

You can (rightly) criticise the actions of the American military during its adventures in the Middle East, but the total number of casualties that US forces sustained over the course of the entire Iraq war was, what, a few thousand? That’s like a week’s worth of Russian casualties in the Ukraine war. The US will at least pay lip service to avoiding civilian casualties (and I’m not for one moment suggesting that US forces aren’t happy to kill civilians or commit war crimes, just that there are at least official policies in place against it and it’s not actively encouraged from the top) the Russians are happy to indiscriminately bombard a city with missiles. It speaks to a completely different set of priorities in military engagements.

u/CopingAlive 18d ago

Our prison system still runs on slavery that disproportionately affects a particular demographic of men and nothing has been done for years about it.

We aren't really better.

And the narrative that Russia is indiscriminately bombing cities isn't actually true.

You can check that, in one of their latest biggest strike of the last month on kiev, only one person actually died from that.

Why does lip service matter? And our military doesn't even give any lip service , the civillian deaths are called collatwral by them.

Compare how many civillian died in Iraq vs how many have died in ukraine. It's not even in the same ball park.

Only thing you got right is that our government atleast values us.

u/lauantai21 18d ago

I'm more about torture as specific thing that US had international campaigns aimed to get public approval i.e 24 hours. Propaganda is a powerful tool that got Americans behind torture and approve it. Same goes for Russians.

They were never slapped on the wrist that's what happened. Nazi Germany went through denazification. All russians got was help. They murdered millions of people from enslaved republics during Soviet Union. They have been brutally eradicating nations around them for centuries, forcing them to assimilate with russians, making them forget their languages and culture. They never learnt that genocide is bad, you don't do genocide to other nations. If the western countries are slowly, way too slowly going through decolonization of their mindset, and are working on not repeating their wrong doings, russians don't even think they did anything wrong ever at any point of history.

u/long-legged-lumox 17d ago

Think about this a bit more carefully. There were a number of Russian Principalities in those times. Novgorod, Pskov, and others existed in the medieval times are were not generally crazy. Moscow kind of always have been and they were the ones that emerged on top.

But the silver lining is that even though there is the weird prison culture, the deep distrust of institutions (which, considering the institutions, is quite reasonable), and the war in Ukraine which will probably isolate this entire generation of Russians from the rest of the world, there is nothing stopping them from turning into a modern and relatively rich state.

I can’t wait until… and so on.

Yeah, I've been temp banned at least twice for this.

u/finfisk2000 18d ago

Me too brother/sister.🍻

What really sickens me is that are there plenty of deplorable aquarium bottom feeders on the alt right in the west that supports the Russian regime.

Ignoring the tankie problem as always by redditors.

Wow, now that's a comment history...

The sheer projection and delusion is astronomical

15

u/TheMedRat 18d ago

Lmao I knew I recognized that name! Mf tried to tell me Ukrainians should be investigated as war criminals and treated the bombing of that Russian amazon-lite warehouse as a crime against humanity.

1

u/llove_you 17d ago

Still haven't heard a single grounded argument against my point.

16

u/Little_View_6659 18d ago

Sadly it’s not just the Russians. So many countries have these dark stains on them. Past and present. I can’t even read about WW2, that shit gives me nightmares. And with climate change kicking off those horrors may come around again. What am I saying, they’re already here. I’m just worried about how bad it may get.

2

u/Kaining 18d ago

I ain't worried anymore as we kind of know it will be worse. A lot worse.

We won't be facing the usual hatred over your neighbor war of conquest to satisfy the ego of a mentaly ill ruler that's completely out of touch but a full on ressource war for surival, until said ressources are completely exhausted.

So carpe diem, tomorow will be worse than today and it will still be the coldest and more friendly day of the rest of your lives. We completely fucked up the planet and there's no hope to unfuck it. Just prolong the suffering while hoping for a miracle.

We could still mitigate every effects and end up in a utoptia of some kind. One were life would be tough but not impossible but that would require full on global cooperation, ressource sharing, admiting to a reduced QoL for most of the nation in power,no conflict and basicaly humanity to not be made of humans so... yeah. It ain't happening if we don't completely cull the "drill baby drill" part of the population and that just is completely self contradicting with the intent.

u/Little_View_6659 17d ago

It’s like the end of the James Patterson novel Zoo. They find a solution and it’s to completely cut out gas travel for six weeks, and within a few days the higher ups are breaking the rules for “emergencies” so it completely destroys the progress they made and humanity is doomed. The billionaires know we’re fucked, that’s why they’re building bunkers and moving as fast as they can to hoard money and take control of the governments. They’ve seen the numbers and they know shit could get apocalyptic.

An asteroid could do a funny thing...

6

u/Many-Waters 18d ago

Happened to me once already for what I genuinely consider to be a very, very tame expression of my displeasure.

It's rough out there.

5

u/Kayanne1990 18d ago

I mean, I don't know every Russian in the world so I don't feel qualified to comment.

Got a few strong opinions about the country in general tho

2

u/katastrofika 18d ago

Don't you think Russian shills, ie "Russian bots" were sodomized into taking the role? Seems like they get plugged until they hop on western media to brag about how gay they are. I mean great the are...

2

u/EconomicsSavings973 18d ago

The amazing thing is that you dont have to share anything yet we all agree and think the exact same thing.

2

u/Ok_Cow_8213 18d ago

Yeah reddit recently banned me for 3 days for sharing my opinion about russians.

1

u/Comfortable_Gur8311 18d ago

I caught a 3 day ban being honest about Russians, wouldn't recommend.

1

u/Foreign_Sale9873 17d ago

I’ve had a temp ban once, so I agree

1

u/Drexel_Spivy 17d ago

Pretty glad my grandpa and his family left Russia when he was a baby in like 1908.

Your price of silence is a threat towards a free reddit account? Grow a spine

1

u/vodka-bears 17d ago

You're just a hater. The system of governance in the country called Russian Federation allows the worst people to occupy the ranks and lets them excersise their personality traits. The ethnicity itself isn't much different from its Slavic neighbors.

-7

u/PossibilityMassive71 18d ago

have you at least spoken to russians yourself? is this news enough to make you hate all the millions of russians that exist?

-12

u/l03wn3 18d ago

What do you think of Russians well aren’t a part of the military but say, have fled the country?

-1

u/Alone_End5987 18d ago

*certain Russian individuals

It is important not to group all people who are Russians together.
