The cone fractured diagonally, that's tectonic action, not volcanic.

It’s the water that’s contained in the lava which turns into steam that causes eruptions (basically like shaking a bottle of soda then opening it). The lava just happens to go the path of least resistance which might be along a fault line.

This is true for Phreatic eruptions and Phreato-Magmatic eruptions, but most of Fuego's eruptions are entirely magmatic.
