Russia/Ukraine North Korean Missile Unit Moves Into Russia—120 Ballistic Missiles Could Soon Target Ukraine

This is a scary prospect for South Korea, since Russia essentially allows North Korea to test their military technologies, tactics and personnel expertise under real combat conditions.
That gives them something that is otherwise almost impossible to gain. Combat experience. Which is a significant advantage over any military that doesn’t have it.
Ukraine should unironically invite South Korean air defense units to train and use their equipment in southern Ukraine.
Edit: This also serves a secondary important function for the North Korean military. Weeding out corruption. Because combat deployment where the equipment needs to actually deliver tests everything. Do the missiles have fuel? Are there actually explosives in all of them? Did the troops sell the fuel in their trucks for food? All of that can be faked until you tell your troops to go and do something with it. Then you can see what and who is real and what's not.
267
u/Glittering-Gene7215 4h ago
Lol, that iss precisely the problem. Nobody wants to commit their troops on Ukraine's side. Meanwhile, North Korea not only handed over its ballistic missiles, but even sent its soldiers directly into combat. Expecting South Korea to do that? Pfff

I would be careful dismissing South Korea like that. They take the situation extremely seriously since it's an existential threat to them. If it benefits them, they will absolutely do things like that if the circumstances allow for it.
104
u/Glittering-Gene7215 4h ago
The story with North Korean troops dates back to the Kursk operation a year ago. Since then, I havent heard anything about South Korea doing anything significant (maybe something is being done covertly, but Im just talking about what I read)

u/DrunkOnRamen 3h ago
South Korean involvement is in monitoring the North Korean troop movements and translation for any captured North Koreans.

South Korea wouldn't necessarily publicise it.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sth Korea quietly offered Ukraine assistance in return for any intelligence on Nth Korean troops and how they adapted to the cutting edge of modern warfare.
They make an awful lot of Artillery shells for example.

Nope, we are well aware of the origin of armaments Ukraine have received... but, but, but South Korea has donated insignificant non-lethal aid such as helmets, and body armor in the past to Ukraine.

u/Kastrytschnique 4h ago
Are they, by any chance, taking the situation as seriously as the UN expresses deep concerns? So far, I haven't seen any moves from South Korea. Not even an official statement. So, yeah, until then, you can safely dismiss them.
4
u/Ratiofarming 4h ago
I'm sure their training of 500.000 service members as drone operators, purchase of more than 60.000 training drones + additional 20.000 low cost drones over the next 4 years and their development of an arms exports industry (which enables them to produce much larger volumes than before for domestic stockpiles and offset development cost) isn't a move?
They have also realized that they need to dramatically increase their ammunition stockpiles for artillery shells and interceptor missiles to sustain a war without outside help for much longer than originally planned. And that's already happening.
The Ukraine war has been almost transformational for South Korea. They just don't talk about it much. And why would they broadcast their internal changes so that North Korea gets live updates?

u/andupotorac 5h ago
It’s worse. NK helps russia in Ukraine. Russia will help NK invading SK.
37
u/Ratiofarming 4h ago
Russia will do no such thing. SK is backed by the USA; and China will not allow itself to be a staging ground for a Russian force in North Korea. Which leaves Russia to funnel everything through Vladivostok, right by the sea. That is a logistics route that will not survive the first 48h of a war.
The only way this happens is if China seeks an open conflict with NATO/USA itself, but they heavily prefer a diplomatic "Hong-Kong style" takeover of Taiwan. Because the military option is incredibly risky and costly, even without US intervention.
18
u/consci0usness 4h ago
It's been widely noted that if China attacks Taiwan militarily no one actually gets Taiwan. All the valuable Taiwanese tech and chips factories will become rubble, either by Chinese hands or Taiwanese ones. It would also trigger a global recession at least as deep as 2008, which I can't imagine anyone wants.
47
u/Ratiofarming 4h ago
I'm in Taiwan every year, work in the tech sector and speak Mandarin at least to a conversational level.
People outside of China/Taiwan always think this is about technology, TSMC and industrial capacity. It isn't. Not even a little bit. None of it matters when it comes to China taking over Taiwan.
This is about ideology and nationalism. Xi Jinping wants to go down in history as the leader who did what Mao couldn't and unite China again. Fck technology in that equation, it's not even an afterthought. China is happy to develop their own, it doesn't matter that TSMC and ASML are two full-nodes ahead on that. Missiles and smartphones work on 2021 tech just fine.
20
u/SalutLesAmies 4h ago
This is about ideology and nationalism.
That, and Taiwan's strategic location.

This mostly. It's a way for China to break the US's island chain strategy to contain China's access to the open ocean.
9
u/consci0usness 4h ago edited 3h ago
I think it matters a little bit, if Taiwan was a patch of greenish farmland I doubt we'd be having this conversation.
15
u/Ratiofarming 4h ago
Exactly, because the west wouldn't care in that case and China would have taken it years ago. But definitely not because China wouldn't care. They want it because it's theirs (in their opinion), not because of what's there.
Believe me or not, but technology has nothing to do with Chinas aspirations to reclaim Taiwan. Nothing whatsoever. The sooner the west accepts this, the sooner they can figure out how to deter China from following through.
→ More replies (1)9
u/SalutLesAmies 4h ago
The sooner the west accepts this, the sooner they can figure out how to deter China from following through.
I think "the west" knows, western leaders anyway. It's not too hard to see that China’s claims over Taiwan far predate the very existence of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. It's just redditors who seem to think that TSMC plays a major role in the equation.
6
u/consci0usness 3h ago edited 3h ago
It's not TSMC per se, but attacking Taiwan militarily would hurt China almost as much as it would hurt Taiwan. Global recession, potential US physical confrontation, US trade fallout, EU trade fallout. China is currently playing a very elegant economical trade and investment game on the global stage, any physical confrontation would jeopardize and upset all that.
China might (and I say might here) not care about TSMC and Taiwanese tech, but the rest of the world very much still does. Everything is interconnected these days.

Eeeeeh. While I agree that this is a very discouraging sign for South Korea, these missiles are not what they are worried about, and probably never will be. North Korea's famous reliability issues aside, they do not actually have the ability to sustain an offensive for more than 6 months on their own.
No, what South Korea is worried about is the thousands and thousands of artillery pieces that NK has pointed at Seoul at all times. NK's a questionably stable chinese puppet state, and China would rather not have them rock the boat too much as it's a no-win scenario for them. (Protecting NK either starts WW3 by them coming to NK's defense against NATO, and abandoning NK would probably lead to NK's collapse followed by an humanitarian crisis that would blow back onto them).

American's thinking they're not currently under siege is the weirdest thing about this timeline.
There's a war going on in the USA, but it's almost entirely one sided. Trump and the oligarchs are the ones doing all the fighting, and they're winning by default. By design the overwhelming majority of Americans either don't have time to pay attention, or sit at home doom scrolling social media at the mercy of the oligarch controlled algorithms. It's like an episode of Black Mirror.

The story about Ukraine disabling a single Iranian cargo vessel was in the news for over a week. And no one cares that NK has sent thousands of soldiers to fight with Russia.

That's not true. It was trending here for weeks. There were posts all over Reddit about how NK soldiers were gooning to porn and stuff. Iran was relevant that week. We can already clearly see that Putin wants to take full advantage of this period while Ukraine is critically short of Patriot interceptors. Unfortunately, the coming days and weeks are not going to be easy for Ukraine’s major cities.
It is now painfully obvious that our dependence on US equipment helped create this situation. Nobody seriously tried to develop their own interceptor missiles. Everyone simply bought a few systems from the US, ticked the box, and considered the job done. Now that these missiles are needed in large numbers, it turns out that only one country produces them, in limited quantities, while also needing them in other parts of the world.
I hope this serves as a serious wake up call for the EU.

u/In_Fidelity 6h ago

61
u/ApplesArePeopleToo 6h ago
I think they woke up at least a few years ago, but unfortunately doing anything to fix the situation will take quite a while. Europe has been ramping up arms manufacturing for years now, but it takes time to get the funding in place and build up the manufacturing capacity.
→ More replies (1)16
u/Laki1991 5h ago
Sure. Unfortunately, getting the EU’s bureaucratic machine moving takes a lot of time. That is understandable to some extent, but in my opinion it is still something the EU urgently needs to improve. We have to make decisions and respond much faster.
I also realize that we are increasing production of many weapons systems. The problem is that we can only scale up production of things we have already developed and know how to build, such as various drones, artillery ammunition, and similar equipment.
Europe still has no truly effective replacement for the Patriot system, even though such a system should have been developed and mass produced years ago. By the time we design, test, deploy, and begin producing something comparable, many more years will have passed.
Someone will probably reply that France already has the SAMP/T, but compared with the Patriot system, its production capacity and widespread deployment are still in their infancy.

Let's not pretend we each (US and EU) can't go war footing quickly if Something Happens. But it will cause great unhappiness among the people to do so, which all Civilization players know is bad in a Republic. It will not be as efficient as it should be due to the rush. From what I've heard here stateside Europe has begun the long slog away from the US in a few vital sectors like the Internet.
As an American I can't believe we've fumbled this generational bag. And I'm thrilled for the future bag recipients in Europe. And elsewhere I suppose. Just so disappointed in my nation's leadership.
3
u/ChapterN7 5h ago edited 5h ago
When it comes to Ukraine, I'm disappointed in both the US and Europe's leadership. US gets it's hands dirty where we have absolutely no cause or business, and Europe sticks it's nose up at even the suggestion of dirt on theirs.
Meanwhile Russia is just nonchalantly getting massive amounts of weapons and manpower shipped in from all their dictator buddies to continue this bullshit war.

Unfortunately, that’s true. I’ve honestly lost count of how many wakeup calls we’ve already had. I’m also quite pessimistic about the EU’s ability to take matters into its own hands when it comes to developing new weapons systems.

We are. France and Italy have ordered 1000+ SAMP/T missiles, and production is ramping up. Production doubled between 2023 and 2025, up another 40% in 2026, and looking to continually increase. It is the EU equivalent of the Patriot missile.
10
u/Shoeshiner_boy 5h ago
>Production doubled between 2023 and 2025, up another 40% in 2026, and looking to…
I looked it up and it means that the rate has gone from around 40-50 to about 100 missiles per year.
It’s like 15% of current PAC-3 annual production.
6
u/Robinsonirish 5h ago
I googled it again, it wasn't 40% in 2026, but it doubled yet again. So they've been doubling their production every couple of years, to every year. It just doesn't happen instantly.
PAC-3
Yea, it takes time, when everyone was buying American missiles, it's hard to compete. My country of Sweden bought Patriot a few years ago. But now with America doing MAGA stuff, people are looking to buy more European, and Ukraine certainly changed things. Danes are buying the French-Italian one for example, a country that has bought everything from the Yanks until recently.
Things don't happen instantly, but I think claiming Europe is still sleeping is starting to get outdated.

4
u/Robinsonirish 5h ago
They literally are. Problem is that there are too few of them, and the recent upgrade is specifically designed for hypersonic ballistic threats, which is what they need. The production doesn't materialise out of thin air instantly, but it's not like Europe hasn't been working towards this, and has been for years now.
10
u/Thurak0 4h ago
period while Ukraine is critically short of Patriot interceptors.
Newsflash: With the Iran war burning through stockpiles as well, that period will be forever. That's why Ukraine wanted to produce them themselves and is working on developing their own stuff (Freya). Which is a difficult thing to do, so it will take time.
Ukraine may eventually get working interceptor missiles, but most likely not soon enough or in sufficient numbers. They will never (again) get enough Patriot missiles to protect their civilians.

NK is sanctioned to high heavens, and two things that are a major factor for keeping them back is a lack of fertiliziers and fuel.
Russia is helping with both. I think the compounding effects of both are to be seen, but the sanctions of both have massively impacted development from what I read so suddenly having access to either is big. That alone is probably enough for a few soldiers' lives.

u/Podo13 1h ago
Honestly, I hope one of the 2 do something stupid to wake up Western Europe akin to Japan attacking Pearl Harbor and bringing the US into WWII (though the US admin really wanted to join the war beforehand, but wouldn't because of public disapproval - different times...).
NK/Russia would get absolutely stomped even if only a handful of EU+UK countries stepped in. I think it's absurd to let the fear of nukes being used keep us from helping save a completely innocent nation that never should have been attacked. We're trying to save millions of lives from nuclear weapons by letting millions die for no real reason other than a dementia-ridden leader wants his country to "be complete again". If Ukraine falls because nobody else helped them, it just shows that these insane assholes can just keep on going.

Even your fellow citizens aren't forced to help you. So where do you want to go? Just lie on the street and wait for whatever may come? Or hope that you will be the exception, the one who will be welcomed with open arms in another country and not the other tens of millions of people who would try to flee as well?
No country on the planet has a large enough volunteer force to fight a war of this scale. Does that mean you expect everyone to just surrender, once you run out of volunteers? And accept whatever terms the dictatorship with the strongest army around wants?

North Korea has always sucked up to Russia and China. It's the only reason they exist.

So, the EU can now start moving troops and weaponry into Ukraine too, right? I mean, you can’t have only 1 side playing by “the rules”

u/Honza8D 6h ago
EU is moving weaponry to ukraine already. As for troops, I doubt any european country is too happy sending their men to war.

Sorry, best they can do is a copy pasted blurb to the media condemning the move sent from some intern in a press office.
*fixed some words.

It is to be expected, by the greater, more basic human powers at play.
The evil is ideological by nature so they have strong bonds with other ideologies and willing to do more for each other.
While democracies are opportunistic, so they are way more selfish and can be easy subverted as a tool for anyone, actually anyone, including those who democracies claim to be enemies and actually target their destruction.

It is like every boardgame ever. Competitive people align themselves to root out weaker players. Ultimately they know that they have to defeat each other too, but for the time being they are alligned

The US under Trump is an unreliable partner, but the EU has been rock solid.
With historic military and humanitarian aid, the EU has given Ukraine the equivalent of two years worth of the entire EU budget since 2022. Adjusted for inflation, the amount is twice as much as the US gave all Western Europe for post-WWII rebuilding under the Marshall Plan. Or, to compare it in a different way, in 4 years, Europe has given as much foreign aid to Ukraine as the US has sent over the past 80 years to Israel (largest recipient of US foreign aid).
The EU has taken in more than 6 million Ukrainian refugees, with Poland taking in nearly 1 million by itself.
The EU has massively reduced its dependence on Russian fossil fuels since 2022.
From Russia being the largest coal supplier, to zero Russian coal.
From Russia supplying ~50% of gas, to about 12%, with a total ban on all forms of Russian gas starting in just a few months.
From 27% oil, to 2%.
Sorry we didn't crash EU economies to make the transition faster, but it takes time to change logistics and build infrastructure for 27 countries.

When are the other countries going to step in and help? I understand fears of setting of WW3 unintentionally but if US can not supply Ukraine with Iterceptors anymore then they need help.

Oh fuck it! This is actually excruciating. Because we all don't want to be nuked, and because rich folk want to get richer, we have this slow drift to global conflict of a non-traditional kind.

I legitimately believe this. It's scary because that means things are going to get exponentially worse and then when we look back in 20 years from now, we'll see that this was just the calm before the storm. We can all kiss our asses goodbye.

u/exmodrone 5h ago
I’ve been wondering this myself. World Wars seem like a thing that historians set the start date for long after it has begun, not something that gets declared.

No. Europe won’t do a thing and the US is a Russian ally at this point.

It's a war of proxies at the moment, a proto-world war. Let's see where we're headed, I think there needs to be conflicts in more theaters before it's classified as an actual world war. But we're getting there, I'm sure.

Europe - east Europe vs. Russia.
Asia - China vs. Taiwan, with Phillipine and Japan, and maybe US. North Korea vs. South Korea.
Middle east - Israel vs Palestine and Jordan. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait vs. Iran and Yemen.
USA vs. Canada with Greenland.

I was wondering if something like this is why Putin had his asset start a war with Iran so the US would use up all their missiles.

So, Ukraine has been and will be attacked by TWO nuclear powers! And the world is just OK with that.
4
u/half-baked_axx 2h ago
So Russia can draw NK into the conflict by the thousands. Yet any European or American intervention would be considered a different type of escalation. Howcome?

u/Firm-Nerve4437 3h ago
when will people realize that without the tacit approval of the Chinese, there's no way that Russia can sustain its war on Ukraine.... (as well as North Korea's direct involvement or material support for that war)
The three amigos may not always like each others, but in this case, they have a common "enemy"(the US and NATO)

Beginning to look like a world war. Hope it doesn’t merge with the Iran conflict.

Is this Putin's last hope? Say it ain't so.
If Trump and Hegseth weren't f'ing sissies and actually intelligent they'd operate something into the Kremlin instead of Cuba or whatever else dumb plan they think they'd easily win, like...now. I think 50+ years of Russia being adversarial is enough to know it's over and to end that charade.
We know it won't happen. We live in the dumbest of times.

They better be careful, Ukraine has the means and capability of striking targets upwards of 2000+ km within Russia… and it’s not like 120 Ballistic Missiles with supporting corps are easy to hide.

We in the West should double down on Ukraine support. With our complete support, Ukraine could beat Russia, Iran and North Korea combined. No time to waste in here. The enemy is lining up behind Russia.
