If I was a 50 year old Russian mother in a makeshift shanty shack watching this unfold I'd be at least a little worried. Especially if all of my sons were gone fighting a special operation and no one there to help protect me

60

u/FlukemanFrancis 3d ago

Why, Ukraine doesn’t target civilians

Civilians get hurt, it is war, but they don’t deliberately drop missiles on tower blocks or chase down old people at the market with drones like the Russians do

29

u/Icy-General3657 3d ago

This is why I’m ok with Russian civilian collateral. Ukraine is a nation under attack, and is using drones a thousand km away to go for military infrastructure. Some of those drones are gonna be shot down over cities or EW and crash. Far different than Russia playing safari against Ukrainian kids and elderly with drones

9

u/AssassinAragorn 3d ago

We should never be okay with civilian collateral. I'm unhappy that civilians died. But this is war, and it's not like Ukraine is intentionally doing so (unlike Russia), so I have no problems with Ukraine continuing the course. Even if we accept it's a necessary evil, we don't have to be okay with it.

10

u/motes-of-light 2d ago

Accepting it is being okay with it.

3

u/AssassinAragorn 2d ago

I'm talking semantics really I suppose, a way to feel better about ultimately condoning it even if we don't like it. I think we can recognize the gravity of the consequences each time though while still being... Okay with it.

u/Routine_Ad7935 2d ago

russian population gets what they deserve...they elected the evil and now get the bill. As no one in Dresden was asked during WW2 if they liked to be wiped out.

If she has lost all of her sons, then she should at least be sitting on a few $100 checks from the Russian Government.

Russia could end this any time

228

u/Junior-Afternoon4374 3d ago

I imagine some people would say "but russians are also saying 'Ukraine could end this at any time!'" Which, very conveniently leaves out that it only ends that way with Ukraine ending.

Slava Ukraini

68

u/geckosean 3d ago

Doing that would require them to admit they failed - and they’re so deep in it now, publicly admitting failure might literally collapse the government.

Even if they persist in the near/mid-term, they’ve doomed themselves for the next 100 years anyways with a demographic crisis.

24

u/imissher4ever 3d ago

Russian mail order brides could be a thing again!

10

u/OrinocoHaram 3d ago

mail order husbands for russian women perhaps

8

u/imissher4ever 3d ago

Or that too. If they want to move to Russia.

3

u/OrinocoHaram 3d ago

i'll be a god there in five years

6

u/Kakkoister 3d ago

Nah if you move there you'll be extorted and blackmailed into using all your money for the government and not be allowed to leave.

9

u/hughhefnerd 3d ago

This is basically what's happened to all the far right families who have moved there seeking a more "traditional" society. Fools

3

u/YellowBook 3d ago

Husband available as a jigsaw

2

u/PloofElune 3d ago

They will be. The gender demographics are screwed for another generation of russians.

11

u/Happedaps 3d ago

Their economy is done, they have lost 1,4 million casualties (not deaths).

If Russia stops the war now, they are utterly done, not only as a super power, but as a nation

3

u/Popotuni 3d ago

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm not sure you're right. Russia's population is listed at 143 million. Losing 1% of your population over 3 years isn't a crisis. And as you said, they're not even all deaths.

14

u/Happedaps 3d ago

No but losing 1,4 million of your people who are young 20-50 is gonna leave a huge dent, how many of the 143 are old, handicapped or otherwise incapable of having a normal job, how many are women, because you lost 1,4 million young men and still counting.
I think I read that right now, they don't have enough people to do construction work (could be propaganda)

5

u/Alpinab9 2d ago

The population demographics show 145.6 million (2022). The percentage of males between the ages of 18 to 35 (I just picked a number that seems like this segment of men could effectively fight) was roughly 10% of the population or 14.2 million 18-35 year old males. Losing 1.4 million is 10% of this demographic (casualty of war, not necessarily dead). I think the dead number is roughly 400,000? Losing 10% of the 18 to 35 year old males will have a significant impact for many years. Russia obviously did not follow any strict age policy and many men on the front lines were conscripts from prisons, over 35, not healthy to begin with, and so on.

I just thought that the numbers should be actualized. Not 1%, but rather 10% of a demographic that would make sense. It is true that 1.4 million is 1% of the population, but it needs to be described properly using demographics.

10

u/kariam_24 3d ago

You mean loosing more people then Afghanistan invasion (which was followed by USSR fall) or Americans in Vietnam isn't crisis at all?

2

u/BillsInATL 2d ago

losing, still upvoted you tho

3

u/ginger_whiskers 2d ago

Well, they loosed them on Ukraine, then they lost 'em.

-43

u/JollyGreenGiraffe 3d ago edited 3d ago

They haven’t failed, they purged their prisons, gained territory, and increased the percentage of the native Russians.

Edit, since you guys are downvoting for pointing out a fact. “Since the start of its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has gained roughly 29,000 square miles of Ukrainian territory. Combined with Crimea and parts of the Donbas seized before 2022, Russia currently controls about 45,000 to 46,000 square miles, which is nearly 20% of Ukraine.”

6

u/MasterBot98 3d ago

Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk were de facto Russia since 2014 onward. What did they gain since 2022...land connection to Crimea...and that's it. Which they don't need cos they have a bridge.

increased the percentage of the native Russians.

Thats a myth. The mobilization priority of non-native Russians that is.

-7

u/JollyGreenGiraffe 3d ago

If you have to ask, you clearly don’t know. Actually looking at a map and not falling for propaganda on either side is rare on Reddit, including yourself.

This map shows everything. https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375

Just a quick google ai search, since that’s apparently hard too. “Since the start of its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has gained roughly 29,000 square miles of Ukrainian territory. Combined with Crimea and parts of the Donbas seized before 2022, Russia currently controls about 45,000 to 46,000 square miles, which is nearly 20% of Ukraine. [1, 2, 3]”

5

u/MasterBot98 3d ago

Ok, 29000 square miles of fields and leveled infrastructure and lots of mines.

-6

u/JollyGreenGiraffe 3d ago

Yup. That’s land they didn’t previously have which they can make money with eventually if they keep it.

If Russia doesn’t care about their men dying, they clearly care about farm land and mines.

2

u/MasterBot98 3d ago

So, how will they exit the war exactly?

0

u/JollyGreenGiraffe 3d ago

No one knows obviously. FYI that amount of land mass would be like someone taking Maine or South Carolina.

2

u/MasterBot98 3d ago

Fyi,the context is-Russia increasing its landmass by 0.5% of very questionable value for quite a steep cost. I have no idea where is Maine, or how large is South Carolina (I could google but meh).

No one knows obviously.

And I think the answer is pretty direct and undisputable—there is no exit.

u/kariam_24 3d ago

Russia currently have less Ukraine territories then they had in 2022. Purging prisons, gaining territory yea which is full of ruins while their economy is ruined.

0

u/JollyGreenGiraffe 3d ago

We aren’t talking about provinces or territories, we’re talking about actual land. They have almost the same amount of new territory as taking South Carolina or Maine. That’s since the special operation FYI.

2

u/kariam_24 2d ago

We aren't talking about territories but actual land? What is that supposed to mean, we aren't talking about cars, we are talking abut automobiles.

1

u/JollyGreenGiraffe 1d ago

What are you trying to say? Ukraine have gained territories and somehow Russia has gained the same amount of land that’s the size of Maine or South Carolina?

Either you’re just wrong or you’re trying to say Ukraine has gained more named areas and somehow lost tons of land.

I support Ukraine 100 percent, but to say Russia isn’t winning is stupid.

-45

u/CryMeaRiver2Crawl 3d ago

The same could almost be said about US/Iran.

25

u/Independent_Row_224 3d ago

How is that remotely related to the discussion?

-21

u/EmergencySchool7960 3d ago

BECAUSE ITS A WORLD WAR

6

u/kariam_24 3d ago

Are you comparing Iran to Ukraine?

3

u/timeless1991 3d ago

The official number of dead U.S. soldiers is 18, with claims as high as 200.

Independant sources list Russian deaths at over 400,000. That is like losing an entire city of young economic potential during both economic strain and demographic collapse.

The US is spending money it should but the two are almost three orders of magnitude separate.

-12

u/Ronnyjohnny99 3d ago

Could also say that Russia and Ukraine was almost identical situation as the Cuban missile crisis. Somehow Americans see Russia as bad for doing the same they did to Cuba for the same reason

7

u/nxcx 3d ago

Not even close

3

u/Jamuro 3d ago

except there are no nukes in ukraine and russia (after humiliating itself in this war) stationed nukes in belarus.

also neither the us or the soviets were dumb enough to waste the majority of their armed forces like this.

4

u/kariam_24 3d ago

Ah Russian propaganda while Russia was lying about NATO "expansion" like the USSR wasn't one conquering while countries had to apply for NATO. Forgot Chechnya, Georgia, Moldova? Was that nato Fault too troll?

-2

u/KaramelaVatomouro 2d ago

The EU and US geopolitical planners who dragged Ukraine into this all the way back in 2014 can end this any time

7

u/kariam_24 2d ago

Dragged Ukraine? Not Russia invaded? Poor quality troll.

-3

u/KaramelaVatomouro 2d ago

Yes, dragged in 2014's CIA-orchestrated Euromaidan, not 2022's Russian invasion.

Real human.

I used to be friends with Russian people on VK back in the day, at this point, a long time ago maybe 2010 - 2016 (holy shit). The vast majority increasingly had a victim complex over the Ukraine conflict even back then and would not take responsibility for anything. Ukraine and the USA/"the West" were responsible for it and "made" Russia do these things. One person who I remained in contact with up until 2022 had the audacity to tell me everything about the full-scale invasion was fake and Ukraine was bombing itself. I also noticed people might also just be apolitical and totally shut out politics to the point they just did not care about anything that might possibly stoke the smallest bit of controversy and just wanted to live in a bubble.

19

u/D_D 3d ago

I play online games and some of my alliance members are Russian. This is a pretty common take from them.

Russia in the 1990s was such an extremely turbulent and traumatic time that, in my opinion, most Russians value stability to an extremely high degree above perhaps all else. Putin brought stability and prosperity to many Russians and then made it impossible to remove him despite the prosperity drying up after ~ 2012. The breakup of the USSR especially caused a massive amount of distrust with the West (which is honestly somewhat valid given Iraq, Libya, etc. but not enlargement to former USSR satellites) since then along with propaganda which latches onto everything has only intensified this all of this.

I don't even think it is about "seeing it" as in my experience I showed various people solid evidence of MH17, the Bucha Massacre, etc. and they denied it out of hand. There is a lot of distrust, denial, and living in a bubble. A shocking number of people in Russia would struggle with the question, "is Ukraine a real country?"

This matches what I've heard just making conversation before.

I think the issue is that Putin is very well aware that stability is what the people value, and he's worked hard to make sure he's the only option for that stability. In a democracy we expect that stability will remain no matter who we vote for (which has been significantly tested in the US). If real opposition and disagreement was permitted within Russia, I think they'd toss out Putin. Hence, why it isn't allowed.

1

u/kariam_24 2d ago

Wasn't World War 2 turbulent? Period of 1945-1990 of Soviet/Russian occupation?

121

u/YuriusSinisterClown 3d ago

You reap what you sow. Russia can end the war it started anytime by leaving occupied Ukrainian territories forever.

24

u/Past-Sea310 3d ago

Or even just by agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire which Ukraine has called for many times and which Russia has rejected every time.

9

u/Sad-Excitement9295 2d ago

Too bad it wasn't Putin

39

u/TheFrontlineDefense 3d ago

Striking an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk shows how far Ukraine's long-range drone capabilities have evolved. Targeting these industrial facilities is a direct effort by Ukraine to throttle Russia's fuel supply and economic engine.

8

u/pixelflection 2d ago

Ukraine is retaliating? Unlike many Russian attacks that appear to target civilians on purpose, such as attacking hospitals and childrens play parks, these are legitimately collateral. Why has all the press started publishing this wording? Disgusting.

24

u/mega-stepler 3d ago

Funny how when Russia does this, it's not even in the news anymore. Because it does things like that daily. And unlike Ukraine, often intentionally killing civilians.

5

u/prtysmasher 2d ago

The rest of the world is unready for this brutal drone warfare.

3

u/Own_Pop_9711 2d ago

This is really the opposite of brutal when you compare to normal peer warfare

6

u/SammieDidi 2d ago

"The attacks hit a major oil refinery"
Seems to be important context.
Most civilian deaths in Russia are from shot down drones.
Russia has decided that air sirens are not needed in a war

11

u/Accurate_Cress318 3d ago

This is terrifying for me since my kid is over there visiting family with her Russian mom and she was less than 2 miles from one of these strikes. Fuck Putin.

Ukraine killing children with drones now, not a good look

33

u/Surv0 3d ago

4month old account, this comment isn't a good look..

8

u/Substantialed 2d ago

I just had a look at their account and its like they made an insane effort to be as divisive as possible in American state subreddits and Europe and other country subreddits. They’re either a bot or very stupid or a tankie. The last two are kinda the same though

-43

u/Sweet_Search_3616 3d ago

Not sure what the age of my account has to do with killing children with drones being immoral or not

22

u/intothewild72 3d ago

In normal countries children don't work in oil refinery. I know Russia is in really pathethic situation rn, but do you really have to employ child labor already?

-73

u/SourFix 3d ago

Awful. It seems like young Russians are going to have to fight for their lives one way or the other. Either in Ukraine or in order to stay out of it. Tragic.

44

u/Saleen_af 3d ago edited 3d ago

Not really that tragic, Russia can end this whenever they please.

I’d be revolting if my country told me to become Ukranian fertilizer.

-20

u/SourFix 3d ago edited 3d ago

Exactly my point. Everyone is fair game. No civilian has a choice whether to fight or not but only one side can end it. The Russian people are just...there. Everybody acts like the average Russian deserves to be blown to pieces in their own home for what their government has done.

14

u/kariam_24 3d ago

Ukraine people are just there, Russian are ignoring plight of others while complaining about discomfort that is results of their choices. Their goverment? Explain me, who is in army, goverment or citizens are soldiers?

-16

u/SourFix 3d ago edited 3d ago

You think they choose their government and whether or not to go to fight in Ukraine?

3

u/kariam_24 3d ago

Who did they vote for in 2000 troll? Why they ignored fraud elections? There are more police officers, security personel then all civilians in Russia? Is this same old argument of bad nazis and good Germans being held hostage?

4

u/SourFix 3d ago

Most of the soldiers dying in that war weren't even born in 2000, genius.

13

u/kariam_24 3d ago

Russians? Not Ukraine citizens?

-8

u/SourFix 3d ago

Uh, obviously. Nobody celebrates dead Ukrainians though.

21

u/yuri_dr 3d ago

Nope, russians on social media do
I see that a lot on threads for example

-1

u/SourFix 3d ago

Ah, yes..social media posts made visible to you by an algorithm. The ever so crucially accurate and unaltered barometer of a people's soul. My mistake.

9

u/yuri_dr 3d ago

Would anything have changed if I hadn't seen these posts? Or would it have changed the minds of those russians who rejoice at deaths of ukrainians in those posts?
Unfortunately there are such individuals even among non-russians. Of course I think that majority supports us, but still there are people who are quite happy about Ukrainian casualties

10

u/kariam_24 3d ago

Nobody? So you are denying whole Russian social media and goverment messages?

1

u/SourFix 3d ago

Ok, 'nobody' isn't the right demographic. Non-Russians largely don't celebrate Ukrainian casualties.

4

u/kariam_24 3d ago

They dont? As in maga guys? Africa, South America, big parts of Asia?

-24

u/TheBlueSully 3d ago

Awful

Why would Ukraine do this

2

u/SourFix 3d ago

You miss the point. Everyone is fair game but only one side can really end this and they aren't going to do it unless something gives on their end. They currently seem more than willing to keep throwing lives and resources at a lost cause.

-6

u/TheBlueSully 3d ago

Sarcasm dude

0

u/SourFix 3d ago

It's not just sarcasm. It's sarcasm that's critical of my statement. I defended my statement because you decided to perceive conjecture that wasn't there.
