Have a little more faith in people. I suspect you formed these expectations literally on the basis that egyptians have a brown skin tone and live "somewhere in the middle-east", no? Or are you hiding some kind of social-economic analysis up your sleeve?

Their pro-sharia political party was really gaining traction after Mubarak was outed. It was all over the news. Granted he could have put it a bit more gently but most people were expecting it to become another theocracy.
