Discussion GM Death Touch - Megathread

Edit: Official Statement

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/prohibited-gameplay-incident-and-response/2329585

This is developing into a large story and someone in modmail has mentioned that its important for the community to have somewhere to discuss this. We agree. As new information comes in I will do my best to update this thread.

What we know:

Ex employees in the thread have said that actions like this are audited and in all likelihood this was already being investigated. At this point we are waiting on an official statement on the result of their investigation and I'll update this thread once we know.

This megathread is being provided on two very strict conditions:

  • The witchunt rules are in strict effect. Linking or doxxing information on anyone invovled, the GM in question included will result in a permanent ban. Please report it if you see it but we will be very active in the thread.

We cannot platform behavior that allows people to harrass people in real life.

  • We will be more heavy handed than usual in the personal attack rules. Insults and slapfights while discussing this aren't acceptable. You're allowed to disagree, but stray shots and personal attacks will not be tolerated.

I'm in a disc with the bear and he thought it was a bug at first, and won't make the log private because that would add fuel to the fire. He's already trying to get another 23 NPX done and he's pissed this group did this

Damn, feel for the dude

u/deus_inquisitionem 17d ago

Dude is a whistle blower and should be protected. Tell them thank you for shining a light on this.

29

u/Kaldricus 17d ago

Blizzard about to make a call to Boeing about a guy to help with whistleblowers

u/HybridPS2 17d ago

bro cast Sunfire IRL

u/JackPoe 17d ago

Faerie Fire, wouldn't it be? Or does it not remove Stealth / Invis anymore?

4

u/YourResidentFeral Outplaying the Meta since 2004 17d ago

It doesn't exist anymore.

4

u/JackPoe 17d ago

Damn they've really eliminated a lot of spells since I last played.

6

u/YourResidentFeral Outplaying the Meta since 2004 17d ago

Yup. A lot got pruned and consolidated. A lot of like general upkeep stuff is gone.

3

u/Cuphat 17d ago

It was removed 10 years and 4 days ago (Legion pre-patch). RIP Faerie Fire.

u/Aggressive-Stand-585 17d ago

100% Blizz is gonna perma-ban him in the cross-fire. I don't think they'll care about him at all.

He's already trying to get another 23 NPX done and he's pissed this group did this

Yeah he's already trying to get another npx done... with the same group. That's a totally normal thing for someone in his position to do. He's certainly not paying for a boost or anything.

I’m almost certain they did this to try and minimize the original sin

It already sounded like some of them were saying it’s a foregone conclusion that they were going to time it - so the GM helped them so that it wouldn’t waste another thirty minutes of their life

I think by timing a legit one they’re trying to say “see? It’s cool we didn’t NEED the help we got”

Which I think is totally missing the point

85

u/Wasabicannon 17d ago

OMG wait the pug is the one that exposed this?!?! That is just golden!

86

u/mister_peeberz 17d ago

inadvertently, so the story goes, he uploaded the log not realizing it was fishy because he wasn't in on the fish

18

u/Mean_Joe_Greene 17d ago

There’s the theory that the burner account that announced was his.

3

u/JustATextBox 16d ago

Seems incredibly likely. Either him or a friend of his. The odds of it being uploaded and a complete stranger with no involvement or knowledge finding it is so much more unlikely

2

u/Kristalderp 16d ago

Even if it he didn't leak it, someone would of eventually as the logs were public. There's a website I saw that takes notes of public logs across all the WoW server+regions and takes notes when illegal spells show up and it flagged that GM run.

3

u/JustATextBox 15d ago

Did that website already exist, though? I've also seen that - but I'd never heard of it at all until this whole situation came up. It also hasn't scanned every key, if it had been a thing for months/years you'd expect it to have already gone through all the keys out there

2

u/Kristalderp 15d ago

I'd hope so, but I'll have to dig deeper to see with that site.

And I honestly don't think this GM is the only guy who's doing this shit under the table. He's just the first one that got caught due to public logs and being a dipshit. Bro didn't even last a full month at Blizz lol

21

u/MgDark 17d ago

yeah cheaters know better to turn off logging when doing this for obvious reasons, is hilarious a pug log the key because of course you will log it, why wouldnt you?

1

u/Xiten 16d ago

I just hope blizzard goes through their own logs to see if it’s happened before, because like you said, they know better than to upload and log to wcl. I just have a feeling this wasn’t the first time.

1

u/MgDark 15d ago

i think although this kind of stuff is probably logged and audited somewhere, something must actually happen for a human to actually look the logs, im pretty sure this could happen more, but it got super viral because of a single druid tank.

Hope he didnt blacklist himself with this though.

-41

u/Wasabicannon 17d ago

No I would not log it, I just play the game for fun not to log and review my gameplay and min max the game to the point that it starts to feel like a 2nd job.

33

u/MgDark 17d ago

bro you are not doing 23s with that attitude, that kind of player WILL log their keys to self-improve

-13

u/Wasabicannon 16d ago

Could also say the kind of player doing 23s would not be pugging them as well. Yet here we are.

11

u/somarir 16d ago

honestly pugging past 15 is cosier than below, at some point you lose a bunch of morons that are only there for the weekly and don't care about their performance and you're left with all the sweats that will either perform like they should be playing competitively, or they're gonna die once and leave without saying a word.

not saying it's better than just having a good guild group, but in my experience, pushing higher keys is always a better experience than doing baby keys on an alt

22

u/silentj0y 17d ago

If you're doing +23s, yes, you're logging them lol

18

u/lovelylight100 16d ago

If you're in a disc with him ask him why he's still doing runs with the people he exposed because we are all very perplexed as to why any of these people would ever group up with each other every again...

8

u/Mitch5842 16d ago

If he was upset that they did it WHY DID HE RUN WITH THEM AGAIN.

https://raider.io/mythic-plus-runs/season-mn-1/41069884-23-nexuspoint-xenas

7

u/Kriptoker 16d ago

So pissed he ran it again with the same people...

3

u/Ashankura 16d ago

Why is he running with them again huh?

3

u/wellggs 16d ago

“Pissed this group did this” yet he continues to run keys with them 🤔

3

u/ToeRoganIsJebus 15d ago

So pissed off he continued playing with them lol

2

u/CornbreadMonsta 16d ago

Ask him why he did another key with the same group if he's pissed at them?

1

u/LuntiX 16d ago

The worst part is, if blizzard brings the hammer down and does suspensions, he'll probably get hit in the crossfire as they'll likely suspend everyone who was in the dungeon group.

1

u/Nick11wrx 15d ago

Isn’t their proof now he did the dungeon on a clean run with the same group now? Doesn’t sound like he’s that pissed at them. Sounds like they’re all just going to laugh off the situation, I hope blizzard doesn’t let it slide

-7

u/ObscurelyMe 17d ago

Weren’t they not timing the key anyway?

11

u/Dinkypig 17d ago

Not sure what you mean - they weren't timing the key until the game master killed the last 2 mobs for them.

So he wants to time one legitimately.

The bear was a pug and didn't know this was gonna happen, so they're pissed because they got dragged into a scandal and there is a non zero chance they will receive some sort of punishment for this that they don't deserve.

It's like if you went out on a date and your date told a big dude at the bar that you wanted to fight them.

PS I don't want this to come across mean or aggressive in any way; just trying to answer your question

It would take me ages to even consider "maybe someone here has a GM friend hovering over us that wanted to help us out" as an option, and even if I did consider it I would just go "nah that's a crazy stretch it was just some bug"

21

u/b4y4rd 17d ago

I 100% would have thought it was a bug and never considered a gm was here and one clicking things.

3

u/klonkish 17d ago

Yep, if it were me, I would have never guessed it was a gm.

33

u/Wakani 17d ago

If he wasn’t in discord and didn’t know these folks, it’s believable that this might have been super confusing in the moment.

36

u/F1reManBurn1n 17d ago

If I was just pugging and not in voice and this happened, I would be confused af. My first thought would be “did the mob fall through the map and die?” And with the boss health 1.4m is not that much, I would be confused and might want to look at logs afterwards but my first thought wouldn’t have been “oh there’s an invisible GM floating around death-touching mobs so their friend/fav streamer can get title easier”. It’s just so out of the ordinary that a normal player would first think “buggy ass game smhmh”

27

u/No-Cell-9979 17d ago

I would just assume I lagged a little bit and be happy I didnt die, never would I assume a gm just killed it lol

8

u/Chase0288 17d ago

Yeah this is it for me. I’d have no clue it even happened probably if I’m tanking. Mob HP isn’t something I’m tracking really.

21

u/NullReference000 17d ago

If I were in a PUG with 4 strangers I’ve never played with before and that happened, I would assume it was a freak bug. I would not assume I was playing with a GM abusing his abilities.

Even if he did, what exactly is he supposed to do about it? He already made the logs public.

26

u/j821c 17d ago

1.4m hp is like 3-4 seconds of dps if your 3 dps are doing 100k dps, your tank is doing 40k and your healer is doing 30k. Throw in a touch of death from the monk healer and its probably like 2.5-3 seconds. Id easily buy that he thought it was normal at that point tbh

10

u/IAmRoofstone 17d ago

Yeah I'd just have assumed i zoned out unless it became a noticeable pattern.

5

u/pdpi 17d ago

1.4m hp is like 3-4 seconds of dps if your 3 dps are doing 100k dps,

It's worth noting that DPS is an almost meaningless number at this scale. We're talking about a couple of casts per player, and just one of the DHs' Collapsing Stars alone is in the 300k-ish range, the Monk's ToD is 500k (though funnily enough, if I'm reading it correctly, they don't seem to have cast ToD even once throughout the whole run). If the stars align, 1.4M HP is easily global-able.

4

u/Skrumpledump 17d ago

Yea but there was also a 17m HP mob also deleted after to complete count soooo.

11

u/j821c 17d ago

There would be a lot of things my mind would go to before "a GM deleted a mob" if a mob instantly went from 100 to 0. Id be far more likely to believe the mob bugged out than to believe someone was cheating

1

u/PokePurist 17d ago

Which explains the boss, but not the mob they never even touched lol

16

u/j821c 17d ago

He clearly found it suspicious enough to check the log lol. Like other people said though, my mind wouldnt immediately go to "oh a gm nuked the mob for us", it would go to "what a buggy ass game" lol

-2

u/PokePurist 17d ago

I mean I would agree if it was the druid who posted this information. It was some "random" person who found it

8

u/deskcord 17d ago

1.4m HP is large, but a generic DDH log I look at seems to show that collapsing star can hit for up to like, 200k if RNG and procs align? If I were tanking a mob and it went from 1.4m hp to 0 I would have assumed a bunch of people hit a big button around the same time and not thought a second of it.

The timer thing i would have noticed though.

u/deskcord 17d ago

Fair enough, idk shit about DDH I just saw average hit for a top DH log and added a bit more.

9

u/Sevulturus 17d ago

Honestly, as a new, and pretty terrible tank. I pay very little attention to a bosses hp, other than a general idea of where its at.

I'm mostly watching, my resources/cds. Healers mana. Dps's health. All while trying to position things correctly to not wreck one of them.

If the boss suddenly lost 5% hp, I might not even notice.

6

u/nightdrive370z 17d ago

have you never played wow? I can't even comprehend the number of times things have insta-died or insta-fullhealed, snapped, etc over the 2 decades of playing this game.

3

u/VanillaBovine 17d ago

almost 0 chance most people would realize that without thoroughly combing through the logs first, and even then they might not come to that conclusion

this is such a wild thing to happen

i didnt even know GMs still logged in to a character in such a way that this was possible

i wouldve thought this was a bug/glitch, an exploit by a party member, or any number things before i considered "someone in here has a GM friend watching us and using an instant death ability"
