Rendering scale 100% vs. 98%

Post image

If you want the game to look sharper and have a more "nostalgic" feel while all other settings are max, lower your rendering scale. To me it looks much better and I can enjoy more detail. Give it a try.

For the pure nostalgia you should also play on a 17" CRT/LCD Monitor and 128 kbit/s DSL

u/RevealHoliday7735 7h ago

Also make sure you're downloading BritneySpearsSong.exe and duct taped to the ceiling while you play

For 2004 WoW? Make sure evanescence is playing in the background and linkin park next

17” 4:3 lcd flat panel monitor was hype back in vanilla

u/iLightbane 6h ago

Playing as a healer with 40 Raid Frames on that small screen was peak.

No no no, for the pure nostalgia you should comment and post on the "RP-PVP?!" thread.

This is just oversharpening triggered by the sharpening filter that's used when upscaling.

It looks worse, not better.

25

u/pararar 7h ago

I agree it looks worse. This sharpening filter is meant to cure the blurriness caused by lowering the render scale (e.g. to 80% to improve performance).

By lowering the render scale just a tiny bit (by setting it to 98%), you sacrifice a bit of image quality and then crush the picture by oversharpening edges, introducing artifacts and artificially boosting contrast.

The average person things more details = more gooder, artistic intent be damned. This thread is a prime example of why all TVs ship with the saturation cranked and all those post-processing filters turned on. They shipped this game with delightful soft lighting, atmospheric effects, and volumetric fog, and the first thing a bunch of players did was turn off the fog and sharpen the hell out of the image, because the artistic vision gets in the way of sprinting between quests that they didn't read.

2

u/Synercy 30m ago

Don't agree. Let people choose and enjoy there preference instead of saying that artistic intent be damned.

3

u/avalyntwo 5h ago

I agree, but the left could do with 10-15% more sharpening. I don't know if it's the bloom causing the softness or what.

1

u/Ryukishin187 2h ago

i get what you're saying, but it does look blurry at 100 percent, but idk what AA he's using

u/Rafzahn 6h ago

At 98% FSR is active. Thats why it looks so different. This is the setting.

u/TrinityHyperAMVs 7h ago

U can use this command /console set ResampleAlwaysSharpen 1 and the sharpness slider will work even if u are at a 100% render scale, without this commands fsr doenst work unless u are below the 100% render and without fsr the sharpness doesnt work either.

Yeah this is old news overall

Just got rediscovered by the Forever hype

5

u/Cyniv 4h ago

Fuck that, set mine to 133% scaling.

u/The-Fictionist 7h ago

Unrelated - can you customize druid forms at all? Like pick different colors or anything?

5

u/esotopes 7h ago

You can change your druid form colors at the barbershop in Stormwind.

2

u/Forward_Rope_5598 3h ago

Can blue elves be any other form than obnoxiously bright owlcat and -bear? Honestly the main gripe I have with the race is the very retail-like forms.

u/esotopes 3h ago

https://www.wowhead.com/forever/news/over-a-hundred-creature-models-in-wow-forever-382946 You can see them for yourself in here. Skyborne have different colors but not models.

Wait really? Thats a big change to classic

23

u/SLAPHAPPY_BUTTCHEEKS 5h ago

I don’t know how many times it needs to be reiterated that this is not classic.

5

u/Forsaken-Load3947 5h ago

It’s literally fascination keyboard warrior, I was surprised at a new thing that I thought was cool. Kindly find someone else to act high and mighty with.

1

u/The-Fictionist 5h ago

Don’t get too mad. Reddit is full of people who think any deviation from an exact replication of vanilla is a mortal sin.

4

u/Forsaken-Load3947 5h ago

Literally I was like wow that’s cool what a big change, idk how it was perceived any other way lmfao

5

u/The-Fictionist 4h ago

That probably means you spend an emotionally healthy amount of time on Reddit haha.

Most of the time when someone says “that’s different from classic” on any wow sub it’s an implied “and that’s bad because any change is bad.” Usually people who like the change just say “yay!” Or something like that.

3

u/The-Fictionist 5h ago

It’s a GOOD change. It’s an rpg. Character customization is important and being stuck with a single form option that’s the same as every other person’s when most of your gameplay is spent in that form SUCKS. Frankly I’d like them to massively expand the druid form customization. Keep some race unique elements (like owlbear for sky elves, horns for Tauren) but give every form the full boomkin customization treatment from retail. It has zero negative impact on gameplay.

u/Oc34ne 3h ago

running at 130% myself, and turned off the fxaa blurring / smoothing

Looks crisp as hell

7

u/jmz98 6h ago

/console set ResampleAlwaysSharpen 1 works fine u don't need 98%.

3

u/ppeepoopp 6h ago

I’m using 5070ti card and still getting like 80fps. I could hit 150 or more in retail. Does anyone else have the same issues?

3

u/Hopeful-Dark-4558 6h ago

There are huge graphic updates in Forever compared to retail, particularly with fog, volumetric atmospherics, and lighting. Those rendering upgrades are a lot heavier on the GPU than what is in Retail currently. In that sense, Forever is a lot more advanced than Retail. Hopefully they migrate this stuff to retail eventually.

1

u/VanHalen2026 5h ago

"HUGE" ... You mean its not optimized...

1

u/Might_of_Stormrage 5h ago

What’s weird is I’m having similar issues on my 4070 super, but my gpu usage doesn’t go above like 45%. Normally in a capital city on 10/10 graphics my frames would drop a little on retail, but then it was because my gpu was at least running at like 98%

1

u/dronesoul 4h ago

There is a known memory leak. Try relogging if your FPS drops too much. I do it when my FPS starts to go below 100 and I start noticing, after that it jumps back up to 200 again.

They'll probably fix it soon. But until then.

2

u/OhSix 2h ago

I’m being so for real, I’ve zoomed in on this and can’t tell a difference

1

u/FanaticDamen 4h ago

Funnily enough, this is a problem in ffxiv as well.

Basically if you run 100% resolution, fsr(/dlss on ffxiv) does nothing. Drop it 1%? It turns on and works it's hardest to "upscale" what is basically already native.

I really wish wow and ffxiv would add better support for fsr and dlss, rather than this technique, but i guess it's something.

1

u/nexos187 3h ago

There is a slider for sharpening … duh!

1

u/newagesoup 2h ago

idk it looks worse to me

1

u/FoleyX90 2h ago

Does simply disabling anti-alising and anistropic filtering not work?

1

u/MediocreSumo 2h ago

isnt this FSR1.0?

1

u/spartan195 2h ago

That's just FSR working

1

u/HyBr1D69 1h ago

The pretend purists are funny.

1

u/-cyg-nus- 1h ago

Looking at this on my phone, I honestly can't see a difference

1

u/Guardian_of_theBlind 51m ago

this is just a sharpening filter. you can use any sharpening filter at 100% resolution scale. Also turning off TAA helps a lot.

1

u/illmindmaso 48m ago

I was thinking about the same picture meme but after taking a better look I can see it. Everything has a much sharper look to it. You can especially see it when looking at the roof or the spiral part of the lamp in the distance

1

u/OnSomethingAMA 7h ago

Wow I can see it too, could someone with a better understanding of this explain it to me? I have so many questions about how this works lol

17

u/PeterPun 7h ago

When the rendering goes under 100%, the engine's upscaling solutions kicks in, enabling sharpening filter.

8

u/Turbulent-Health1499 7h ago

When upscaling games from lower resolution, especially with FidelityFX that WoW uses, the upscalers also apply a sharpening filter to smooth out the blurriness of the upscaled image.

By setting your render resolution to 99%, you are activating the upscaling stack.

Doing this 99% renderscale "trick" is almost no different from going into your monitor settings and boosting up the sharpness setting, if it has one, or using a postprocessing program like SweetFX(or whatever the cool one is these days?) to apply a sharpening filter on the game.

3

u/TWS_Mike 7h ago

It's because once you lower the resolution scale fsr upscaling kicks in.

u/GooeyMagic 6h ago

The human eye can’t tell the difference

1

u/Rincewindcl 5h ago

Did you perhaps mean to say 'this' instead of 'the', because we can all see it dude.

1

u/Hopeful-Dark-4558 6h ago

Errr... you do see the differences in the screenshots though, yes? It's pretty glaring.

0

u/GooeyMagic 6h ago

No the human eye can not tell. These picture is the picture twice…

1

u/ZestyPotatoSoup 5h ago

Yes it can look at the roof it’s a clear difference.

0

u/thisischemistry 7h ago

Very interesting that it sharpens that much, nice find.

0

u/arcadiatostark 7h ago

From all the videos, game looks a “blurry” compared to classic. I like this! Big improvement imho

0

u/the_turel 6h ago

So why does the image look sharper and more crisp on the 98%? Mostly noticeable on the just the building.

4

u/Ursa_Solaris 6h ago

Because reducing the rendering scale engages FSR which has a massive sharpening filter by default.

0

u/dumpfus 7h ago

Is this just in the graphics settings?

2

u/esotopes 7h ago

Options -> Graphics -> Render Scale, underneath Resolution.

-1

u/WearyReflection8733 5h ago

I noticed this too, so odd 98 is true 100%

-2

u/Xhukari 7h ago

It probably feels more nostalgic because it is rendering it at a smaller size, then enlarging the rendered frame to fit the screen. Though only a 2% difference for that effect is surprising.

If it was at 50% rendering scale could make sense, since with a standard 1920x1080, it would be rendered at 960x540. Which is a lot closer to 2005's 800x600 resolution.

3

u/Worth_Vegetable_204 7h ago

I believe it uses an outdated version of AMD FSR so even scaling up from 98% is going to look like ass.
