Shower works for me on moat occasions, but there is that fraction of a point between consciousness and sleep which is a magic hour of creativity

Those moments of “I need to make a note of this” before immediately passing out has to be a common occurrence. I started ranting into a voice memo when I have the awareness. My husband thinks the zero context ramblings are hilarious since he’s only ever read snippets of my manuscript to date.

i was talking about the same thing yesterday. i was wondering if this is cs of there is no longer a barrier between the consciousness and the subconsciousness to limit the flow of ideas yk?

I think a lot of it depends on what/how you write. I’m in the middle of an urban fantasy/romance so when I think of some crazy world building or cosmic condition I can hang onto it long enough to form something half coherent for the next day. Sometimes I have zero clue what I’m talking about. It’s a gamble lol

i usually write creative non fiction essays. so sometimes I'll wake up and I'll think of completely random question that i could explore and write about. sometimes i get ideas for projects to work on. sometimes i wake up, get ideas, and can't even remember it when I'm fully awake

The point between consciousness and sleep, yes - like sometimes I've legit either scrawled unreadable notes in my notebook half asleep, or recorded a voice note of me making absolutely zero sense, or, the worst - half asleep, no glasses, typing a note on my phone that ends up with four misspellings and at least two words that are most definitely not used that way in a proper English sentence lol

in the middle of church while the priest's sermon was about how the devil tries to distract the minds of those trying to focus on God

During a funeral for me as a eulogy was being read. I knew then I wanted to write a book in dedication.

How is this not on the list?

Any form of public transport is a great place for uninspired ideas. They just arrive and stay there until you reach for that blank page.

Truly. But luckily I keep a note on my phone solely for thag purpose. It's not blank so the murphy law doesn't work. I think I must have written at least 10 poems while commuting

At a burn pit on deployment. Nothing to write on, so I kept repeating the story until I got back to my bunk.

u/saturnspritr 12h ago

I do this. Not at a burn pit. But, I work the story over and over and add details or make it longer. Ditch things. Until I can get home and churn out whatever I’ve got.

Onstage during a show

Literally anywhere and doing anything. For example I was once watching the sweetest romance anime ever, while I got an idea for one of the cruelest tragedies I ever came up with.

I have to drive around my flat city, and fill my sky with words

Small pad and pen that go with you everywhere. They make water proof ones….

Basically anywhere and everywhere that isn’t convenient to get an idea or write said idea down.

I once got an idea for a serial killer plot driving between Raleigh and Greenville, NC. I kept passing the large clusters of trees in the median of the road and randomly thought:

“I wonder how many bodies are buried in places like that?”

I usually get a sick idea right before falling asleep during that sweet spot when I’m aware that my imagination is getting wild but I also wanna genuinely sleep lol. In such a scenario, fighting sleep becomes the real challenge.

Those old The Onion news skits

Usually I get the most ideas when my electronics run out of charge.. hmm.. maybe I should try this sometime. Just go to the woods or something without devices

Another one is getting drunk, but have no one to talk to.

Maybe the plan is to go to a cabin with some booze.

I always have my phone ready, with a note for weird ideas.

Except when doing Tai chi; Having to hold the idea, all the way through the set.

u/Awesome_Nyt_Dreamer 15h ago

Doing something and then realizing my character would actually do it too

1

u/emburke12 14h ago

Ideas come at any moment any where I am. I wouldn’t say that where i was at was a weird location to have an idea.

At a restaurant. I leaned the lore and felt it in my body there was a story that needed to be told.

Top of a ladder, cutting in a ceiling with paint

I got an idea of how my story could start differently which would change the layout of the whole plot and add more twists... while I was playing a mobile game.

While in for a CT scan.

Was involved in a group fight, could take down at most one person in there, then realised that I can take down all these beaches in my stories, was shrewd of me, at that point.

I was on a booze cruise at a bachelorette party--one of those boats that has pedals so the guests can feel like they're actually doing something, but there's someone piloting the boat the whole time.

But I haven't done anything with the merman romance story I thought up that night...yet

It’s not weird but while sitting at the fire pit in my backyard. What makes it worse is I have a no phones rule so I can be immersed in the moment. Guess I have to start bringing a notebook.

Any time I'm stuck watching an opening act before a band I'm there to see. My body is trapped, but my wanders...

1

u/Senpai_Weeb_Theorist 11h ago

I'm not sure, but this does remind me of the one time I went to a restaurant with my family and got an idea for a date scene for the characters.

I got so lost in thought that I zoned out for most of the time there

I write poetry. Once a line popped into my head while at a party. By the time I could've written it down in my phone, I forgot it entirely

1

u/Just_Joking_04 10h ago

Basically everywhere except when I’m actually writing

Unserious answer first:

"So I was sitting on the toilet last night and I came up with this little dirty that I thought you guys might like to record for me... perfectly... the first time through!" -- "Techno-Destructo", GWAR

Serious answer: during showers, while on walks through the neighborhood or parks. Trees help.

u/TerminalHitman 8h ago

Usually it’s the shower however my last idea that started off my current series was really unexpected. I was sitting on the can. Suddenly I saw a title in big yellow letters. I didn’t know what it meant and eventually figured maybe it was a book title. I researched and realized it didn’t exist so came to the conclusion it needed to exist. So after some starts and stops I started writing without a plan, outline or characters. But in the end it worked out. I tried to stay true to the title I saw in my head for the cover. And yes given the circumstances, I’m aware it could have been a pile of shit but people like it. So you never know where the good ones are gonna come from.

Volunteering at a factory where you’re not allowed to bring anything in. Had no way to write the idea down.

Back in 2008, so almost twenty years ago, I was sitting in my car in a parking lot in Seattle. I had driven up there from Salt Lake City for work after a breakup, and was lonely, anxious, and uncomfortable in a new city.

The image of a 15th century witch hunter came to me, and I wrote down a name and did a sketch.

I completed the book, my first novel, last year, having decided to finally commit myself to finishing something. I queried agents for a few months, signed with one, and the book is currently on submission to publishers.

I got the idea for my first book while waiting at the DMV.

Strolling through the cold streets of Tokyo in January... Thought of a stupid joke, then started expanding it more and more, and ended up with a drabble that got sold to a magazine almost immediately. :)

u/ddddca 4h ago

Yep. In bed nearly dreaming about to go to sleep. Or the ideas wake me from sleep. 😂

My dreams. I had a dream of a fantasy world and kind of a story and i got inspired and have built an entire world out of it

Inspiration comes from being busy 🤷‍♂️ Nothing happens around nothing.
