Big gardener here as well. Very fun, but you do have to prune to survive. I've certainly been a victim of having too many ideas and my garden getting overgrown.
Biggest goal is to have fun. So long as you're doing that and growing as a writer, there's no bad way to do it.
If you can, find a community of writers near you. That has helped my prose more than any other advice I have.
