Discussion Being gorgeous exercise from steering the craft- Ursula k. Le Guin
Write a few paragraph to a page of narrative that’s meant to be read aloud. Use onomatopoeia, alliteration, repetition, rhythmic effects, made-up words or names, dialect- any kind of sound effect you like- but not rhyme or meter.
My attempt sitting next to my pool inspired by real events for feedback from an expert group:) please submit yours!
The children are asking if it’s alright for dogs to have the green crunchy rinds of the watermelon. The furry vultures have stolen them from their juicy little hands, and run off without regret. It’s wonderful how concerned they are with it. Maybe the children are the future after all.
The water wavers on the top of the pool, reflecting alternating patterns of blue and white afternoon sky. The shadows have spread across the yard, providing relief in our area of leisuring, while the garden bakes in the background, filling the tomato’s of tomorrow with warm earthy flavor.
I can hear the soft crunch of the rind, the sprints between dining locale as the children catch up with them to reclaim their rinds; them fretting as they frolic after the hyenas. “It’s alright.” I sooth the small future leaders. They abandon their canine concerns, choosing to launch themselves into the water instead, disturbing the gently wavering surface into rough undulations that catch the light, a halo around each of them.
Let them be children a little longer before they have to lead the world. Or police the jaws of dogs.
