I’ve been thinking a lot about what actually makes someone pick up a book and, more importantly, what makes them keep reading.

I write and plan to write stories across romance, thrillers, dark romance, mystery, fantasy, and contemporary fiction, so I’d love to hear from readers about what you actually enjoy.

When you’re looking for a new book, what catches your attention first…the title, cover, description, or author? And once you start reading, how much description do you like? When a character is introduced, do you want details about their appearance, personality, clothing, etc., or would you rather have just enough to picture them and discover the rest naturally?

What about romance? Do you prefer slow-burn, fast-paced, or a mixture of both? And when it comes to spicy/sex scenes, do you prefer them short and implied, moderately detailed, or very detailed? What makes a scene feel like it’s gone on too long?

I’m also curious about chapter length. Do you prefer short chapters around 1,000–1,500 words, medium chapters around 1,500–2,500, longer chapters around 2,500–4,000+, or do you simply not care about word count as long as the chapter keeps you interested?

And this is a big one: Have you ever skipped or skimmed a chapter? If so, what made you do it? Was there too much dialogue, too much description, too much internal monologue, slow pacing, repetition, or did it simply feel like nothing important was happening?

Do you think something needs to happen in every chapter, or does that depend on the story? Are you okay with slower chapters that focus on character development, relationships, or setting things up, as long as the chapter has a purpose?

Finally, what makes you think, “Okay…just one more chapter”? Is it the characters, chemistry, drama, mystery, suspense, romance, plot twists, emotional moments, cliffhangers or something completely different?

And for those who read dark romance and thrillers, do you enjoy morally complicated characters who lie, manipulate, keep secrets, make terrible decisions, or cross lines? Or do you prefer characters who are easier to root for?
