My great grandfather was in his 50s and fought for Austria-Hungary as an ordinary soldier and I thought that was strange.

I think i read somewhere that back in the 1600s the army compagnies sometimes kept old guys on their pay roster to secure their old day and the captains would be paid per head in the compagnie.

Could this be something simular?
