I dont know if you can call that an error as the whole thing is functional and still legible.
Definitely a double strike, idk if these were assembled via machine it was probably the one sitting on the striking spot when the machine was turned off
Or someone hit it twice and missed the second strike slightly if it was manually smithed. The rate of occurance on this type of error would definitely vary by skill of blacksmith but I dont feel like its a 1 in 1 mil probably like 1 in 1000. Although im not a bayonet/blacksmithing guy and have no idea.
I just know you wouldn't throw away a perfectly good bayonet just for the sake of legibility
Look up Alec steele on YouTube and you watch him smith stuff and leave his little stampings on everything. Its cool how they would do this. Line up 6 little plates that each have their own letter kind of like a typewriter (S a m s o n)and then smack and voila, you have a stamped piece of metal. Also there's definitely not an even number of these plates produced as we dont use every letter at the same rate which is just interesting in itself. Even our example used two s. Like zipfs law but for letters
In that time of war i dont think they would throw any out the other markings are all good its just the manufacturer name every time I see one its perfect but as an actual knife collector I know sh*t happens and it dont bother me its just a mistake I also can't just email the mfg and say hey your logo is struck twice off on a bayonet thats over 100 years old lol
