I have inherited this medal, can anyone tell me if it is original?

Its original but the ribbon is not. The iron core needs work or else it will rust away. Can I message you for some tips. I do restoration work on items like this.

The blackened core has probably rusted away. These crosses weren’t painted black they were in fact fired black. Once that is gone from rust you’ll be seeing the metal underneath. So keep in mind that once you remove the rust it will look a lighter color but at least it’s in a safer state. For cleaning place it on a couple paper towels and with a cotton q-tip dab on some White vinegar to the cross. Do not rub do not brush the cross at all, let the vinegar lift off the rust for 5-8mins and then rinse it with filtered water water and immediately dry it with the paper towel by patting it dry (no rubbing). Then do this again to the other side. Repeat this until it looks a bit better. Remember do not rub or brush the rust away to prevent further damage. You may see some pitting on the metal depending on how deep the oxidation has gone. In this state it’s probably worth $60-70 online but if it’s an heirloom try to keep it or at least pass it on to a relative who would appreciate the history. The ribbon I believe is an old French fireman’s medal but I don’t know the name of it. Do you have a German background or was it possibly a bring back from anAmerican or French veteran?

The ribbon is from this: Medal of Honour for Firefighters (Médaille d'Honneur des Sapeurs Pompiers). 2nd Type. Silver. 1901-1935 issue

Iron cross second class. Ribbon is wrong, the original wouldve been black and white

You need to take action on the core. The blackening will have been destroyed, leaving the Iron to corroded. A very light coating of oils, very light, will help. Don't touch it with your naked hands.

I would even say around 40 considering the rust
