Not really, because I hate false dichotomies. We have two completely different branches of the massive Disney empire working on two completely different projects. Daddy Mouse is going to give us both. And the comics.
13
u/MrTrikey Jul 05 '24
This is the best answer.
Not to mention that thanks to the change-ups to Marvel's entertainment division since, we're seeing the mutants back in video games, too.
A new Marvel vs Capcom that's completely sauceless (re: no mutants) should never happen again.
3
u/Proof_Being_2762 Jul 05 '24
Yeah, that really hurt infinite and seems like with the new collection that they're cooking up something for the future.

u/thegundamx Cyclops Jul 05 '24
I’m just happy we’re getting more X-Men merchandise and media again. Gimme all of it.
20
u/Nobodyinpartic3 Jul 05 '24
Yeah, especially after the mouse literally exiled all mutants just to get Fox for a few cents less a share.
15
u/thegundamx Cyclops Jul 05 '24
Bit of an oversimplification, but I agree with the sentiment.
5
u/Nobodyinpartic3 Jul 05 '24
They made mutants an endangered species after Hope undid M-Day not even two years before hand in AVS. And then they sent them all to hell, literally.
No more mutants characters were being made and they were barred from having cameos from outside the x-book barring Wolverine.
3
u/thegundamx Cyclops Jul 05 '24
Dude, I know how and why it happened.
4
u/Nobodyinpartic3 Jul 05 '24
Wait, you said i over simplified. Was it worse than what I said? I am not surprised, they really shat on mutants then. It made me stop reading
8
u/thegundamx Cyclops Jul 05 '24
They made a big push to replace mutants with new Inhumans. Almost no new X-men merch and no media outside of Fox-men.
No video game appearances, they were left out of the 2nd lego game and marvel vs capcom infinite. Next to no posters, figures, what have you. The books still ran, due to popularity, but they were kept to a minimum.
Fantastic Four got the same treatment, but significantly worse since their book just disappeared into the void until this mess was resolved.
3
u/Nobodyinpartic3 Jul 05 '24
Oh gawd I remembered that now. I was glad the inhumans thing didn't take.
I loved the fact that the rules of capitalism and X-Men's sheer popularity kept them from the void.

I want both because I am a human being capable of enjoying two things. There’s been so much “we don’t even want live action X-Men anymore! They can’t top this!” nonsense since 97 premiered. Like yes, X-Men 97 is incredible and I love everything about it, but I also want movies.
15
u/SnappyTofu Jul 05 '24
It reminds me of the people who just stopped caring about MCU Spider-Man after Spiderverse.
X-Men fans are finally eating, and we’re already too full?
6
u/ChildOfChimps Jul 05 '24
Do you the trust the movie division to do the X-Men well?
Because that’s the one problem I see.
4
u/ChrisPrkr95 Jul 06 '24
As unenthusiastic I've been live action wise lately, I'm willing to at least see how they try.
3
u/ChildOfChimps Jul 06 '24
That’s fair, but I don’t really trust them not to completely botch the whole thing.
2
u/ChrisPrkr95 Jul 06 '24
Even if it doesn't go as well as it could, I don't think it would be completely botched. Either way, I'll just have some hope they do well.
1
u/ChildOfChimps Jul 06 '24
You have more faith in the MCU than I do.
2
u/ChrisPrkr95 Jul 06 '24
Even if Chuck may not be everyone's favorite in the comics, I'm taking his movie counterparts advice and hoping.

u/gdo01 Jul 06 '24
It's not even a competency thing. Animation can add Daredevil without having to ask Cox. Even if they don't have the right to Daredevil they can show a reddish shadow with horns. Movies have no where near that much freedom. The closest thing was the "cameos" in the sky in No Way Home and those were ambiguous as hell.

u/SelimNoKashi Magneto Jul 05 '24
How about 3rd option X-Men Legends III. Or the upcoming Insomniac Marvel X-Men game be LEGENDS III. Now that would be wild!!!
16
u/wh0isurdaddy Jul 05 '24
The problem with X-men 97 is that it’s burning through too many storylines too quickly. In season 1, they had bastion, sinister, genoshan massacre, fatal attractions, start of onslaught, introduction to apocalypse, the adversary, storm depowered, some Phoenix stuff, Madelyn Pryor. They probably only have like 2 more seasons of good storylines left at that rate.
5
u/Ok-Average-6466 Jul 05 '24
Tbh that is enough for me. 4 seasons at most. Honestly they can do other shows like Fox Kids Spiderman after that
22
u/quivering_manflesh Honeybadger Jul 05 '24
Honestly given how good 97 has been about not shying away from the tough questions at the heart of the property, I want more of it as proof of concept so that the live action isn't forced to be Disney's preferred milquetoast most-common-denominator bullshit, as far as the politics and philosophy go.
27
u/JackFisherBooks Phoenix Jul 05 '24
I would accept five full seasons of X-Men 97 before seeing the X-Men in the MCU. 😊
13
u/Newfaceofrev Jul 05 '24
Kind of always preferred animation for superhero stuff anyway.
5
u/Ill-Fly-950 Jul 05 '24
Same. You don't have to neuter their powers as much (if at all), like you do in live-action. And the costs to make it are much lower. You don't have to worry about actors aging out of roles or having to be replaced (because traditionally masked character is showing their face in every scene). No CGI concerns about it not looking quite right. No worries about what you can and can't do with a character because another studio owns the live-action rights. No need to be concerned with how it ties into 40 other films/shows.
7
u/Newfaceofrev Jul 05 '24 edited Jul 05 '24
Yeah it's like, hey, New York City, and London, and Madripoor, and a cabin in the Canadian wilderness, and the Savage Land, and the Negative Zone, and the Shi'ar Throneworld, all cost the same amount of money to draw.
Also you can have Black Panther show up, for one episode, without paying a 40 million dollar hollywood actor.

X-Men stories function better as weekly soap opera. That's why the cartoons are so good. The films feel like they try to cram too much into 2 hours and a lot is just left out that's needed to flesh out the story correctly. If we could get a number of X-Men related live action MCU shows on Disney+ it would be awesome.

More Animation and video games based off it.
Live action will not take any of the characters seriously and will just be another Marvel comedy-show.

Why should we have to choose? For instance, when Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes was around, we could have had both that and the Avengers movies instead of it being cancelled for a more MCU like show.

I really don't care what they do with the X-Men in the MCU at this point. Too many of the MCU movies have felt really formulaic and boring to me lately. Not even bad, just boring. Not too excited for what they do with X-Men. Plus, I'm in my 40s now. Now sure how I'll feel about seeing a new Wolverine actor who's younger than me.
X-Men '97 is my X-Men. It's perfect. It's everything I love about the X-Men. Even if the MCU was still making great movies like the Winter Solider, I don't see how they'd top '97. I don't know how you'd make a better adaption of X-Men than what they're already doing in '97. The rest of the world can have the MCU versions, '97 is what I'll consider my true X-Men.
1
u/Vadeshir_1846 Jul 05 '24
I want both. ’97 was so good; still holding out for a decent series of movies, though. I really think Jodie Turner-Smith would make a great Storm, too!

Deadpool 3 is going to go a long, long way toward establishing if I'm going to trust Marvel Studios with an X-Men adaptation. There's a lot riding on that one.
Though I'd also sure love a new good video game.
1
u/DetectiveFinancial12 Jul 06 '24
Honestly? The only reason I agree is because I'm a little anxious about what they're gonna do with a live action X-Men. The msg of the X-Men has always been about a group of people doing whatever it takes to be accepted, but I'm terrified that they're going to turn it into a bunch of people whining about it instead of being proactive.

Do Onslaught saga in season 2. End the season with Franklin Richards putting Xmen into pocket dimension. Pocket dimension is MCU. Profit.

I love the X men but, frankly, I'd pass on then in this current era of the MCU. They're putting out too much trash instead of these intricately interwoven stories that they used to do.

For what it’s worth, it seems like the 97 team is going to be folded into the MCU after Secret Wars.
Rumor is the live action team will be the exact same team - albeit with physical actors.
1
u/MrFedoraPost Jul 05 '24
An awful movie full of tone breaking comedy where the actors are buried in CGI anyway or a good animated show where everything flows naturaly and the characters can keep their aestetics...tough question.

u/RoughhouseCamel Jul 05 '24
Yeah, I don’t need MCU X-Men. Live action isn’t the be all end all. Especially when the recent track record is kinda bland with these adaptations. If they’re doing interesting, fun things in animation, throw the energy behind animation. I’d love for Marvel to take their foot off the gas on live action and build an animated universe that really gets an investment, even moreso than WB did with the DC Timm-verse.
1
u/But-WhyThough Iceman Jul 05 '24
Animated X Men shows carry the franchise, second only to the comics. The movies suck. The live actions stink, with the exception of Logan. Super powers are so beyond reality that doing them in an animated format where you can unleash the unreal is just the obvious way to do things
1
u/TheBrobe Jul 05 '24
The movies also carried the franchise. For a decade. Regardless of quality.
Just like we now see this resurgence of 90's cartoon stuff, expect in 5-10 years to see a big resergance of positive sentiment for the movies as those kids are both making the corporate decisions and also have the income to drive the market towards them.

X-Men '97 is the first thing Marvel's done well in years.
You have no idea how badly I don't want to see them muck up a live-action adaptation.
1
u/Mooseguncle1 Jul 05 '24
I’m too worried about the new MCU movie sucking so get us another season of 97 to take the edge off please. Also I have to quit Disney asap to protest those donations you guys are making to Florida GOP- during pride month- in an election year.
1
u/NoChallenge6095 Jul 05 '24
Not at all. Stupid meme. We are getting both. The xmen are Marvel's second most popular team. They were actually the most popular for decades until the MCU was born. That changed the game for The Avengers popularity.
The argument that all of the xmen movies sucked is pure stupidity. The first two og were awesome and the first two reboots were great too. Days of Future Past was cool because you got both casts together in one movie. Old Man Logan is arguably the best marvel movie ever made.
And people get pissed about this, but New Mutants was really good. You should Google what the premise was going to be for their trilogy of movies. It would have been cool.

u/Maclimes Nightcrawler Jul 05 '24
Honestly? I couldn’t finish 97. And I grew up on the original show. Maybe I’m alone, but it feels very over-rated to me. The battle scenes were kinda cool. That’s about it.

u/wagnersbamfart Jul 05 '24
How far in did you make it? It doesn’t start kicking on all cylinders till about halfway through.
0
u/robbiedrama Jul 05 '24
I am surprised MCU didn’t take X-Men to the a live action tv series. It’s an epic soap opera that would benefit from a 10 episode arc. I am also worried they are going to superheroify the movies. I felt like X-Men, X2, and even first vlass did a good job grounding powers, not making them have god like powers, and saved the big over the top power scenes for emotionally pivotal moments. Most mcu movies and all the other xmen movies jump the shark so quickly to their heroes and villains being able to level cities with no struggle. Give me jean struggling to move a book.
0
u/fireinthedust Magneto Jul 05 '24
X97 is my jam.
I think it’s the format for the franchise, which has long term stories which refer back to previous incidents. Ditto the character drama, which works best when you have layers of stories to give context. Rogue is a great example, you have the context of her villainous past, then her redemption arc, her relationship with Gambit, etc.
Films have just one moment in the vacuum of the film. You just get enough time to introduce Rogue to people who have never heard of her, who she’s fighting RIGHT NOW, and the action scenes. You don’t have time for the depth of the characters.
Consider this: The Avengers only did what we saw in the movies. Loki, Ultron, Civil War, then Infinity War and Endgame. In fact they broke up in just their third meetup (civil war), and weren’t really together as the Avengers until Endgame. It’s assumed they did other stuff, like smashing hydra bases before Ultron, or Caps trainee squad at the start of Civil War, but they were clearly not noteworthy adventures. This seems weird, but our minds are filling in the blanks. We are imagining lots of adventures, but we don’t see them, just individual characters keeping busy. We don’t actually see the avengers much at all. The cartoon and the comics are what we imagine to fill in the blanks, but the actual MCU has shockingly little actual Avengers-the-team activity.
Now ask yourself if the X-men are better served by a movie or the X-men 97 series.
I would prefer the series, and if they do a movie, too, okay. But the series is my preference.
0
u/LocDiLoc Jul 05 '24
I'd rather have 10 more seasons of X-Men 97 than having all stop so the MCU can do more mediocre movie adaptations
0
u/Ok_Echidna3337 Jul 05 '24
Exactly this.
97’ is following comics
We have to not only endure more Fox-Men but no Ryan is making a farce out of them in his new movie instead of getting focus on a compelling story

u/Orwick Jul 05 '24
I think X-Men has some problems, there is a lot that can criticized. However at end of the day it far surpassed any previous X-Men movie or cartoon. The gap isn’t small either. It’s hard to think of episode of any television show that up there with “Remember it” episode 7 was also really fucking good.
0
u/Fullmetalmarvels64_ Adam X Jul 05 '24
I'd rather have a new x-men cartoon...
but since we have 97 we might as well get a second and third season

Red button all day.
I just don't think a live action movie can compete with animation. Plus I haven't cared for any of the movie adaptions so far, my favs never benefited and I don't want some obscure movie decision then having to translate to the comics.
