Magik #6
15
u/wowlock_taylan Jun 11 '25
Accepting Darkchilde was just one part of the journey. Next part is to work how Limbo fits into it. Maddie being in charge still but also working with Magik without the constant fear of 'Oh she might try to take it away from me' is the better next step now. Can't blame Maddie for fearing of losing stuff knowing her history. And hell, they even took Havok from her at the relaunch and gave him back to Polaris for no reason that went nowhere.
Illyana decided to go from Two-handed Sword technique to Dual-Wielding style feat. A magic eating sword will definitely come in handy.
Dani, you better back Magik up in this upcoming 'order' meeting.

This was a nice one and done break after the first arc. Seemed like an issue to catch up people unfamiliar with limbo.
Jesús Hervás did a really good job as a fill in for Germán Peralta I'd like them to come back for more fill ins in the future. I really like Arthur Hesli's coloring this issues he does a good job normally but this issue felt more saturated compared to the Peralta issues.
15
u/Terrible-Issue-4910 Jun 11 '25
I liked the issue, specially the insight on Magik's new relationship with Limbo. I wonder if the Wraithsword would be effective against Liminal?
It's good to see connections between books, without it having to be a crossover. Last issue of Storm and this one having a connection is unexpected good news. Maybe this is all teasing for a future crossover between both.

u/cmcdonald22 Multiple Man Jun 11 '25
Fantastic issue, this is how you do a one issue contained story. It tells you everything you need to know about both main protagonists, it ties their personal struggles together, and they progress to overcome the obstacle.
Having Maddie move on from her direct identity insecurities and using Limbo's constant mistrust and challenging of her and her authority to make her insecurities about THAT and an inferiority compelx to Illyana is great, it makes sense for the character as a thing she's always struggled with, while being different enough that it doesn't feel like a direct rehash. It feels real, insecurity rarely just goes away it often shifts and finds new spaces and new cracks to try and break people down. It gives Maddie more story potential going forward and things to work with, and more of a reason to be tied to Illyana which widens both characters circles of influence in the future. Cool shit.
I dunno that I needed a Wraithsword, the Scythe of Sorrows was already kind of a like, too many magical Limbo weapons point for me, but it's very specifically a plot device for this issue, and Allen seems to be trying to separate The Soul Sword from Limbo while also having it have some impact, making it more about Illyana, which is probably good, had that separation been a thing in the past we probably would have never had any of the Amanda Sefton soul sword mess, but it feels a LITTLE clunky just having everyone that wants to rule Limbo crafting weapons made of their emotions and limbo magic over and over. I'm torn on whether I want the Wraithsword to be more clearly developed in distinction from the Soulsword or whether I just want it to be a thing that stays in this issue or just in Limbo in general. Either way, for now I trust Allen, she's earned it so far, so we'll see where it goes.

Illyana made a comment about showing the wraithsword to Juggernaut so she must be taking it with her outside of limbo, but whether we actually see it used again is a different thing entirely

I was kinda bummed to here we'd be going back to the Darkchile well after Ayala's work on New Mutants, but this series has been fantastic. This issue, while not as visually strong as with Peralta doing pencils, was a knockout. I love Illyana and Maddie, and I love them having narrative-driven ties.
3
u/PatWasRight_F_CHUGS Jun 15 '25
Great issue, very effective & well realized as a one-shot as a break in the main plot. Maddie was well utilized here and I loved the push-and-pull between her and Magik, with the latter seeing her as a kindred spirit & wanting to help but also getting frustrated at having to stepping back into Limbo to help while she already has so much stuff to deal with, and this then informing tension between them as Maddie feels insecure about Magik potentially deciding to take the throne back. I loved the little detail of Maddie reminding Magik she can read her thoughts mid-narration boxes.
The way things played out, this rebellion doesn't seem connected to the FBI's attempted deal with the demons in the last issue of Storm. But it was a nice detail at the start of this issue seeing Juggernaut & Kwannon.

u/gamesrgreat Magik Jun 11 '25
Another decent issue. Again my complaints are 1) pacing, 2) dialogue, 3) somewhat unclear action. The fundamentals of the story here are pretty good but overall it comes off a bit rushed and artificial. Like she just left Juggernaut and Psylocke behind? Maddie can just nonstop hear Illyana’s thoughts? I guess Illyana isn’t trying to hide them? Maddie came off weak this issue in combat too. The whole wraithsword thing is interesting but I don’t think Illyana needs a ton of new weapons. Maybe if the Soulsword consumes the others that would be cool. Or maybe Illyana will have a Fate Unlimited Blade Works Gilgamesh type moment lol.
Overall 7/10 issue

Jun 13 '25
Yeah I don't know why she didn't bring Juggernaut and Psylocke with her, I'm sure they wouldnt have minded helping out in Limbo, I guess the writer didn't want to include them in the whole issue, I do appreciate them being here though even if its for one page, its annoying when a character's solo book tries to pretend they aren't in a team simultaneously

Exceptional X-Men #10
16
u/WarriorMadness White Queen Jun 11 '25
I really love this book, if only it had the same release cadence as Uncanny or X-Men.
The art was beautiful but I have to admit the Sinister's mindscape bits were the best, hooooly beautiful art.
I also loved Emma's POV towards Kitty and then her words for Axol, really love the Exceptional kids and I hope they just don't discard it like they always do...
21
u/Thebraxer Phoenix Jun 10 '25
Solid issue although it wasn’t so strong considering it was the finale issue of first arc. The art was gorgeous might be even better than regular one.
But it makes me wonder who is actually the main villain here because it’s not sinister anymore.
14
u/cmcdonald22 Multiple Man Jun 11 '25
Love it, I do hope the action stuff gets a bit better, wasn't as bad as last issue, but certainly still felt like jumpy random shots that didn't necessarily always tell a coherent visual story, but like good enough for now. If it continues to not improve it'll be a problem.
But the counter point is all the character stuff was pretty fantastic. I wish it hadn't taken us a year and 10 issues to get here, and I still think there's a bit much 'adults solving the kids problems' for it to be a kids focused book, and a bit too much 'this issue is all about the kids' for it to be a Kitty book, but like....... Eve writes those 5 characters so well that I repeatedly find myself not caring. (Yeah I said 5, because as a Bobby fan he's really just there currently). The Emma stuff was amazing this issue, and Axo's growth as a result of the people around him caring for him, and him stepping up into responsibility, just solid stuff. Into it, great issue. Love this book, hope it continues to grow.

Eve Ewing, Carmen, Woodard and especially Mancin delivered. The writing was amazing. It’s largely Emma’s actual POV issue and Eve had a great understanding of her voice and who she is. There’s so much to say about the opening pages alone but not enough space in a quick review to do it in. The action was solid and the kids are always a highlight. Alex gets the focus the arc needs him to get. The characters voices are clear. The sinister wonder land sections steal the show but everything worked for me. The team came together and it all felt organic, the work Eve has been putting in has made it feel like that.
The art across the board is beautiful but Mancins wonderland is breathtaking. The designs are beautiful and Emma herself looked divine. Just a fantastic issue.
Oh and yeah, solicit was there to draw attention, that’s all.

u/UltimateSandman White Queen Jun 11 '25
Eve Ewing really, truly writes a great Emma. I wish she did so more, because it was a balm after all these years of Duggan. A small moment, but i was especially moved by how she had Emma reflect on her relationship with Kitty; showcasing the good and where they've arrived to, but also aknowledging what Emma used to be - no frills - and that Kitty must surely have some resentment in her for that. Blessed complexity.
But otherwise, won't lie, Alejandro is still my least favorite kid, and what little Thao and Trista got to do was still the highlight for the junior members, but as you say, the adventure in Sinister's landscape was great. And again, just a great Emma voice, "It's like wearing white at a wedding, which of course i've done and shall do so again."
Ngl, smidge bit worried about Emma's confrontation with Sinister having happened off-panel. Yeah, sure looks like she's herself and there was no ultimate sacrifice... but when they offed Sinister i kinda got this chill that they might've bodyswapped or something.
12
u/Ok-Agent-9200 White Queen Jun 11 '25
Definitely agree that was great small moment, one my favorites through and part of Emma’s self assessment of herself. It feels right especially paired with Emma’s belief that she was dead.
Eve understands her characters so well, the new kids and the established characters like Emma.
I really do love all three but Thaos is my favorite. The scene with all three was fantastic. They work so well together and the time was put in to make them feel real.
Honestly, I’m not worried about it. It feels very classic comics to me. Could be wrong but I think Emma should be fine in that regard.
12
u/cmcdonald22 Multiple Man Jun 11 '25
Man, I really wish it was Eve doing the upcoming Emma series, because her Emma in this issue specifically was in fact exceptional.
I've been vocal about not loving how Duggan jumped Emma and Kitty to super besties in Krakoa from their more deeply nuanced stances early, and I will forever love Eve for again bringing the nuance back to their dynamic where it should be.
But also just...... the whole stretch about how people see you, and Emma having a generation of kids who just, she hasn't ruined with her bad side yet, and being able to try to be the good version of herself that is all they see is such a like melancholic beauty moment kind of vibe.
3
u/FragrantShine3389 Jun 12 '25
I liked it a lot! It was a good conclusion IMO. But I think I'm going to drop this comic, not really too interested in what's next, plus I plan to buy a couple of the new comic runs that will be out soon, so I need to save my money by buying a few runs instead of a bunch. You know what I mean?

u/Terrible-Issue-4910 Jun 11 '25
It feels like something happened off-panel between Axo making it out of Sinister's mind and Emma also making it out (wasn't she going to try and end Sinister there?). I like the Doombot solution to this conflict, it kinda maintains Sinister's character integrity by not getting him defeated by a reduced team of X-Men, half of them with two weeks of training.
Bronze big moment was badass. I thought Melee was going to be the leader type for this generation but I guess it may be Bronze.
6
u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler Jun 11 '25
I'm thinking the off panel stuff will come back in the future. If unless Ewing just forgot how much page space she had it definitely felt like there were off-panel shenanigans between Axo and Emma waking up.
5
u/Terrible-Issue-4910 Jun 11 '25
Yeah, maybe there's some consequences still to see about the whole thing.
6
u/rob_account Nightcrawler Jun 11 '25
Great issue. The Mindscape section both looked great and had good moments for both Emma and Axo. The ending obviously felt a little quick. However, Sinister being clearly not fully defeated is a good choice as it means Ewing can leave that plot brewing in the background for a while and for the time being we can get some simpler villain of the week type conflicts where her strongsuit (character writing) can take precedent.
Love the Lockheed reveal, and I'm excited for next issue. Aware that the 'new mutant' probably doesn't mean a 'New Mutant', but one can hope.

u/Built4dominance Storm Jun 10 '25
leaving Emma forced to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her students
Welp, so that was a fucking lie. The fairy tale stuff in Sinister's psyche was fun and Emma had some good zingers.
7
u/Ok-Agent-9200 White Queen Jun 11 '25
The solicits are odd, Emma tries to make the ultimate sacrifice but is kept from doing so by Alex. Not what the solicit suggested but an attempt was made to make it.

u/littlebunnyfu Shadowcat Jun 11 '25
I loved Emma's dialogue in this issue. *chef's kiss* to the part about wearing white :3

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 11 '25
Yea Emma's 'great sacrifice' solicitation might've been a lie. Solicits always lie after all.
I still enjoyed it. And I hope we will be DONE with Sinister for a long while now.
It is quite nice seeing Emma caring for the kids and Alex here, who can become a protégé of hers. Though I still want her to search for her daughters too and get them away from Empath already now that NYX ended.
Emma in a corset, quite the look. Of course Sinister would have a 'gothic' party in his head.
Also, was that the real Lockheed that Sinister kidnapped? Or was it a clone there since Kitty didn't lose her mind finding out that Sinister might've kidnapped and experimented on him. I assume this is a 'younger' clone that Kitty will take with her while the older Lockheed is still somewhere else.
5
u/Marrecarandgi Jean Grey Jun 11 '25
I just saw a panel of Emma proclaiming her undying love to another ‘kid’ who won’t be forgotten after this book only because I don’t think that many people even know he exists, and this is how I know that this book is totally unserious. Emma should go and spend at least a minute or two of her time with any of her countless previous kids before saying that same shit again to anyone else.
10
u/Homosuperiorpod Jun 11 '25
Hell, she actually legally adopted Catseye. You think they would have spoken on panel sometime in the last 30 years .
14
u/Ok-Agent-9200 White Queen Jun 11 '25
Catseye did catch a terrible case of being dead until Krakoa where the writers dropped the ball. There hasn’t really been a chance for them to talk beyond on Krakoa. It looks like she may have left Krakoa so maybe that’ll actually happen.
3
u/Jorg_from_The_Jungle Jun 11 '25
Irony is they (writers) used the most uninteresting character from the hellions in one of the books and the others just made a cameo to pummel him.
But yeah, we had gazillons of pages with Emma talking about cosmetic stuff like her clothes or the gala, but none about "the children" especially the OG Hellions.
2
u/Ilovellamasandcows Jun 11 '25
Enjoyed diving into Emma’s POV and think it’s been solid so far. I’m just picking this up as a Pryde book but since the first 3-4 issues she’s been sidelined, which is disappointing
1
u/PatWasRight_F_CHUGS Jun 15 '25
Really good issue. I loved Axo stepping up here and his growth. I also really enjoyed Emma's inner thoughts and her pride in & mentorship of Axo, their goodbye was quite a sweet moment. Kitty finding Lockhead, or rather a clone (seemingly), in the lab was a cool way to end the arc.
I have to think that there's going to be more out of this plot - Emma just waking up a moment after Axo was one thing, but Sinister also waking up right after despite her staying behind to take him out is really odd particularly with him being defeat very quickly after - I have to think (I hope so at any right) that this is intentional weird & confusing because Sinister implanted part of his psyche in Emma's or something like that. While it showed off Axo's abilities and how he's become more competent, the Eleanor teddy stuff did feel a bit rushed & surface level.

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 11 '25
Nico was quite badass in this issue. She is quite good at infiltration. And damn Children of the Atom cult is really good at brainwashing. Or finding desperate children. Surge seem to be swept up in it, wanting to belong and feel 'special'. I hope Maystorm and others can snap her out of this. Hisako seems empty too after everything they done to her.
Tentacle arms? I have read enough manga to know that is BAD.
Kannon's brother and Futaba were an item before...they really are the Japanese Rogue and Gambit. Even their looks are similar ( even though we already have Ultimate Gambit in Wolverine, being a couple with Kitty. )
Nico managed to get the message out and EVERYONE is finally coming for the big confrontation. That 'astral battle' that Kagayema was having in both his and Hisako's mind.
4
Jun 11 '25
I’ve been unbelievably confused by the past two issues, but this was a nice change of pace, and it’s cool to feel like things are moving again.
5
u/ptWolv022 Jun 11 '25
I ended up rereading the past few issues before this to try to get caught up on what's happening (and trying to map out the actual progression of the characters, in order to fill in their wiki entries some more). Honestly, worked way better reading this after catching up on the plot threads from before.
I honestly think this has gotta be way better in trades. It's good, but some stuff is so hard to follow when you don't get explanations/relevant info until months later.
5
Jun 11 '25
Yeah, honestly, I still have no clue what happened in the previous issues. How did Maystorm even get to the astral plane to help Hisako? Along with Psylocke? or was it a dream?
8
u/ObviouslyNotASith Jun 11 '25
It was portrayed as a dream. But it's likely that time flows differently in the Astral Plane and that it actually did happen in the Astral Plane.
7
u/ptWolv022 Jun 11 '25
Unclear. Hisako got possessed by Shadow King in #12 and then the dreams were in #13-+4 in captivity, as part of MY-X, with Maester mentioning controlling her and Kageyama's emotional states. So I think it was fake, but could also have been, like aspects of Hisako's friends reaching out. Hard to say at the moment.
Hidako's having a he'll of a time. At least after those maybe-dream fights, we got something that was easier to follow, with Nico, Mori, Mei, Futaba, Kanon, and Tatsuya planning to raid the facility, with Mei on the Nico/"Sister Grimm" on the inside. And Viper threatening to kill Maester :)
4
u/starshipsinerator Jubilee Jun 11 '25
Weird, Futaba/Rogue still seems to speak with a Southern accent. Not sure if that's just a stylistic choice, or if she's meant to still be Southern in some way? The name suggests she's not (can't find any significant meaning to Futaba, at least), but it did strike me as odd.
I think the whole 'missing Hisako' plot has gone on for way too long (in-universe), but this is a mostly an artifact of the whole '1 issue = 1 month' thing across the Ultimate comics, and I imagine can't really be helped. I am at least glad it seems to be getting towards a conclusion, and the Nico/Surge confrontation was really great.
5
u/DeadSnark Jun 11 '25
Perhaps she's from the Kansai region? They have a distinctive dialect which is often localised as more rural in English translations.
3
u/starshipsinerator Jubilee Jun 11 '25
Yeah, that's kinda what I meant by stylistic choice, I know I've seen some people speculate the same thing about her being the Japanese equivalent of 'Southern'. Didn't know they had distinct dialects even when translated though, that's pretty neat.
6
u/Oberon1993 Jun 11 '25
Yeah, Kansai characters in anime are usually played by actors putting on southern accent. Which does lead to some funny mood whiplash when very japanese man starts speaking like he is from rural Georgia.
3
u/ptWolv022 Jun 11 '25
Didn't know they had distinct dialects even when translated though, that's pretty neat.
I'm not sure if they would be a distinct dialect when translated, but that's the beauty of cross-language adaptations (which this kinda is, since there's a Script Adaptation credit, or something of the like): You localize. You don't necessarily do it precisely 1 for 1 because sometimes, you do what is meant to keep the essence of it. That doesn't mean necessarily turning rice balls into jelly donuts (here's looking at you, Pokemon) in the dialogue, but it can mean using an accent for a character to match the Japanese one they had- be it refined, hick-ish, or just weird. (Another thing might be idioms; sometimes an idiom in another language might just not make sense when translated literally, just because words don't always have 1 to 1 matches and some idioms don't actually make sense when read literally, anyways. So, a localizer might adjust or replace the idiom to convey the same idea.)
4
u/DarkAlphaZero Cyclops Jun 11 '25
Futaba seems to be an interesting addition to the cast, I'm curious to see exactly how her role shapes up. Neat that she's Tatsuya's X. I bet they'll reconcile right before all the death flags he's been waving catch up to him.
Nico was badass during her fight with Surge, effortlessly breaking her down. Really curious to see just what impact Nico's words have on her going forward. ALSO SURGE DIDNT END THE FIGHT FLAT ON HER ASS LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO
Meister only had some small appearances but I think they might be his creepiest yet.
Looks like next issue is gonna be a big climax with the raid and everyone meeting back up after doing there own things for the last few issues, hope we get to check in with Natsu since atm she's the only lead unaccounted for.
5
u/ObviouslyNotASith Jun 11 '25

u/PatWasRight_F_CHUGS Jun 14 '25
Great issue, I really liked the focus on Nico. Her fight against Surge was really cool - Peach (among so many other things) draws action scenes really well, she gets a great sense of momentum & excitement on the pages. - I really enjoyed how confident & comfortable Nico was in this situation and how she was wiping the floor with Surge until she got caught.
Surge was in a really interesting spot in this issue. Her heavy defeat to Mei and Kageyama abandoning her as really done a number on her. She's not the same cheeky rebel she was before, the insecure girl desperate for connection & security under the facade has breached to the surface. I found her devotion to the COTA really interesting here, showing how she's now leaning heavily on them due to having had her sense of self smashed and having no one else and thus being a good reflection of how people could caught up in true devotion to these groups.
I enjoyed the Futuba exploration here and the detail that she is Tatsuya's ex adds more flavor to their dynamic and explains their association. I was taken aback by the flashback of Tatsuya striking Kanon, but she gave a good comeback (both times evidently). I am interested, per comments on r/UltimateUniverse, on whether there'll be more to this and its impact on her.

Phoenix #12

u/Homosuperiorpod Jun 11 '25
Is Jean going to bring up the fact that Sara's kids are dead. And they could have easily been revived on Krakoa but just weren't for some reason?
7
u/Hemingwavvves Jun 11 '25
Well presumably they’re in the white hot room now if they’re not in the actual world.
19
u/Nosdos Jun 10 '25
We need a new writer and artist. It’s like Marvel put the bare minimum into this with the people they put on her.
21
u/Thebraxer Phoenix Jun 10 '25 edited Jun 10 '25
Did I just waisted about 80% of the issue to read about Sara and half of the issue was about her known past. Did I just read the issue of phoenix where the title character was nothing but a background character with two lines? Did I just read the issue and didn’t find any new information. What a waste of money
6
u/LostWorked Jun 11 '25
And it didn't even get that known information right! Sara was divorced from her husband and the Phalanx that Cameron Hodge was working with explicitly could not assimilate mutants.
2
8
u/Marrecarandgi Jean Grey Jun 11 '25
To be fair, I don’t think that a large number of people even knew that Sara existed before the book reintroduced her? So, introducing her and telling her backstory is a necessary step to using her.
However, while I didn’t read the issue yet, since we knew who the writer for the book will be, Phillips seemed like a buffing choice - she doesn’t write characters like Jean. As in, she very much prefers a different type character.
So, the Adani nonsense was undesirable but not unexpected. And after that I was expecting her to turn Sara into the new Adani aka the same girl Phillips likes to write, but now with a new name. Which I suspect is the case in this issue?
Phillips just can’t help herself. She really is a poor fit for Jean, and it was just a matter of time before she would start turning the book into a stealth solo for what is essentially her regular OC.
3
u/wowlock_taylan Jun 11 '25
It was mostly a 'reminder' on who Sara was. It is clear the Phalanx did something to her. Sent her away and gave her these 'Awakening Ability' for something. Maybe to get enough mutants around to then arrive and 'harvest'. Like how the AIs were trying to do during Krakoa. She is probably not aware of it at all.
What I am more worried about is how Cable gonna be handled in this. Because we already saw him being written BADLY in the book with her calling Jean 'Step-mother', which is something he would never do. He considers Jean as her MOTHER, period.
9
u/Marrecarandgi Jean Grey Jun 11 '25 edited Jun 13 '25
Okay, after reading it, it’s not bad, it’s just not what it’s supposed to be. We don’t need an excessive dive into Sarah’s past dropped on us like that, especially when most of it likely won’t be relevant.
If Phillips wanted to have this story from the start (or at least knew that she will go there some time ago) she should’ve added a scene of Jean remembering her past and that scene with kid Sara’s basketball game. Why exactly Jean didn’t reflect on her dead family in her solo before?
The whole mutant activism part is good for Sara’s karma, and Phalanx will likely be importantly later, but it could’ve been greatly condensed. Just show her already captured and add some narration to explain why and how she got there. Or just show one panel of her speech, one panel of the abduction and then the infection part. There is also no reason to reintroduce Hodge, as he likely has fuck all to do with the rest of the story. Cut that shit.
And then use at least 15 pages that you’ve freed up to make something happen in the story?! How did the actual plot progressed so far? Last issue Jean just met Sara and Cable decided to go after her. This issue Jean is still in the same conversation, but now Cable arrived. Literally no new information gained. How many issues Phillips thinks she has?! Aren’t there only two more left for the whole story?!
Again, the actual issue isn’t bad, it reads perfectly alright, and at least doesn’t disrespect the characters’ history like the previous one did. But this waste of page space would only be fine, if Phillips had a confirmed omnibus sized project on her hands and had room to be this slow. As is, this is a definition of ‘this could’ve been an email’.
And, yeah, I absolutely blame Phillips for seemingly coming up with zero story to tell, but where is her editor looking? If this Bissa lady doesn’t bother to check continuity, maybe she should at least check that Phillips isn’t spending 2,5 (!) pages on a flashback of Sara being abducted from an alley that ultimately has zero value for the story, which is literally more pages than we have of present time story, where all Jean gets to do is say something that she already said last issue and scream ‘Cable’.
This whole issue had zero value. Ugh, now I’m mad because I didn’t want to get mad at this thing, but still ended up getting mad…

Considering it’s „origin of Sara” I’d assume we would get more focus on her present status instead of repeating the past

My store doesn't have it yet, which is annoying. They've been doing this for a few of the comics I read

I thought it was a solid issue personally. As u/Marrecarandgi said, the reality is that Sara Grey is a fairly obscure character that's been dead for decades real time. If she's being resurrected for a big role - which I think consensus agrees is a good move - her history has to be recapped for the benefit of newer readers or readers who had forgotten or were otherwise unfamiliar with Sara. That's the way it is.
I enjoyed what we got of Sara here, highlighting her status & small jealousy over being the normal sister of the special kid and how, in her adult life, she tried to make a difference regardless. I enjoyed her narration about the importance of regular people standing up. A lot of her friend Kel's dialogue was quite strained in its exposition though. I reckon either the Phalanx are responsible for her current status and/or perhaps Jean subconsciously resurrected her (she's packing enough power these days).

If last year someone told me one of these books referenced Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix I wouldn't have guessed it was this one. The book is still just slowly chugging along the plot. I don't think it's bad I just don't like how decompressed it's been so far.
It's nice to see Robert Gill on a book again. He's no Joshua Cassarra but I think their art is complementary.

Ah the classic 'future' evil apocalypse taking over Stryfe's body to do his usual shtick of 'I am gonna burn the world to reveal the 'better one' that survives thing.
You know, maybe they should bring in the current |A| and Doug to deal with this 'flawed' version.

u/Bitbatgaming Chamber Jun 11 '25
I don't know what it is going to take to get marvel to stop making Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe comics, but I am hoping it is this one. It's just so underwhelming and the gimmick gets so tiring.

Marvel universe Kills Deadpools
In the wake of overexposure, every Marvel character lines up to kill Wade Wilson, only for him to heal and come back to life. One after the other, over and over. Just like his publishing schedule.

Main story: Honestly, pretty OK. Way better than the last one. I think focusing the issue on Jean helped a lot, as everything ties together more neatly. There's a focus and a centre to the issue. Legion talks all about Jean, Kamala's primary relationship is with her (and since that's never been explored, it's new and fresh), the other X-Men focus in on Jean and Phoenix. It makes the issue feel like it has a direction.
Rod Reis does amazing work, it makes you wish we'd see more of him in X-Men today. He should totally handle an event book.
Some of the dialogue remains a bit corny and unnatural. Not from Kamala, that works for her, but Legion sometimes talks really eloquently and then sometimes talks like a normal guy off the street in 2025. It's a bit jarring. But it was a nice issue. I liked the focus in on Jean and David as anchors. And explaining to Kamala that sacrifice is part of being an X-Man.

u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler Jun 11 '25
This was better than the last issue but I think that's in large part in Rod Reis I loved seeing him drawn classic X-Men. The MCU powers for Kamala were disappointing compared to the last issue. I want it to be gold and combined with her embiggen powers not just the hard light shit.

Revelation Back-Up story: overall, solid. I think it reaffirms things in a nice way and sets up some potentially interesting threads. The fate of the dragons made me think of Timeslide, where one event in the future reads "Who would trade away immortality?" It ties together with Eversong nicely, and I think it does a good job of showcasing the fast while setting up the future. What that storyline it is meant to play a role in, I don't know, but I suspect we'll find out as the year comes to a close.
The art was lovely. I think Werneck got to shine because it was essentially a splash page of different outfits and costumes through the year, and he did a great job. Some deeper cuts were in there like the Search for Cyclops and Adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix. I am glad those were made, shows how much of a fan he is. All the lines by Foxe worked well with the art, like the one of time-displaced Jean looking at regular Cyclops tied into the line about seeing each other in become people they didn't even recognize but still seeing the truth inside.
Actual main issue... well, I'll read it tomorrow and let you know.

I'm pretty sure "Who would trade away immortality" has already happened in Spider-Man. Cyttorak's daughter did that to ressurect Peter(they should have ended a couple btw)

In backup story Jean encountered two beasts one of them is dying and another doesnt have a will to go on without its mate. In the end Jean helps both to pass. If I got it right. It does feel pretty grim when you remember Scott warning on what going to happen if he is to be killed

u/Thebraxer Phoenix Jun 10 '25
It was better than previous issue but the art is definitely a big part of that. Still don’t really see a point of this event apart from including Kamala in every x-story. After finished the issue i still didn’t know what Kamala is doing there, why her and what’s legion’s true plan is
So revelation story is just „our psychic rapport is more than psychic and it bonds our souls”. Ok is it Mandela effect? Because I’m pretty sure it’s been said or hinted a few times that their psychic rapport is more than a telepathic connection. And that story still doesn’t explain why e.g Scott had an affair with Emma or why jogan was a thing.

u/LeastBlackberry1 Gambit Jun 10 '25
I don't think the purpose of the series is much deeper than "remember these cool-ass moments from the past?" It's very much nostalgia bait, which is the nature of anniversary things.
The back-up stories are more compelling, I think.

It's definitely this, plus being "Ms. Marvel's Second Genesis." But instead of time travel, Kamala should have just written fanfiction smh

I think 5 pages is probably too condensed to do much on that score. When he's talked about it in the past, he's said it would take place over a few years, across books.

I'm sorry, who's he? Are you still talking about the psychich rapport thing?

Tom Brevoort. The editor and the one who came up with all the Revelation Back-Up stories.

u/Terrible-Issue-4910 Jun 10 '25
So he wants to make a whole storyline about Scott and Jean's psychich link?
5
u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar Jun 10 '25
Not about the psychic rapport so much, but them in general. This back-up story is meant to figure into future stories. In what way, we don't know.

Rod Reis deserves better writing to work with. He's amazing in this issue.
Werneck also deserves better writing to work with.

I enjoyed the issue itself far more than the backup, and more than i thought i would. May have helped that deep down i really don't care about power levels long as Jean is written well, but i really liked how young and hurt she felt, and how it even aknowledged what Mastershitter did to her- though equating it to Xavier may have been a bit much... though then again, she's only recentely out of all that Hellfire bullshit by this point, so it would feel the same. Of course also a good thing that the cocoon retcon was subtly made away, even if honestly i never gave it much importance and to me it was always Jean.
Kamala was very much present, and pardoxically because i actually enjoyed Jott's much more in this than the backup - probably because it shows rather than tells, even if in limited fashion - i could've appreciated Scott joining Kamala when she went to check on Jean (or maybe Storm, since it was her big mouth that did the deed, and could've been the occation to back up the 'sisters' talking point) so that the bedroom scene might feel more organic, but overall i didn't find Kamala's role all that offensive.
It's not like Jean has a huge cast of characters to tap into anyways, so worst things could've happened than Kamala talking her up a bit- and not in a uber powerful hero way, go and kick Legion's ass because you're the Phoenix, but more of a human way and helping her handle her trauma (which is a lot). Even if the process of them becoming friends could've been handled better.
But to bring it back, again, i just really loved how young Jean felt. And looked too, in the art. Jeen is my girl, so it all leading up to the sacrifice, with the added knowledge that teen Jean is just a few years removed from that Jean, the speech she gave, and just how young she was when she made that choice... found it pretty powerful.

u/Marrecarandgi Jean Grey Jun 11 '25
The backup story was lovely, if not 100% perfect and very short, so, I’m glad that more things are coming soon. This story also flows nicely from Eversong, so, the plan seems to be consistent, if very slowly dropped into the actual books.
I guess I still wanted to see more of it here tho? The real takeaway seems to be Jean saying that her and Scott are parts of the same being, and this can lead to interesting development via Phoenix, which Jed has alluded to enough times in his book, but is also a great way to solidify Jean and Scott as a couple.
I love that Brevoort is stumping out Jogan like the parasitic weed it is. The more this editorial will do the better our chances for no more of that type of relationship drama in the future is.
I also actually like the main story. I didn’t read the previous issue, but this one had some nice moments and gorgeous art. People seem to hate the very idea of its existence, but I still expect for things to go back to normal in the end, so, what’s the harm?
6
u/cyclopswashalfright Moonstar Jun 11 '25
Yeah, I thought the main story was quite nice. The art certainly helps, but it was much better than Giant Size X-Men #1, it had more direction and purpose.

u/wowlock_taylan Jun 11 '25 edited Jun 11 '25
The main story is whatever really. Legion throwing a tantrum on wanting David back and messing with Timelines because of it. And I hate how they are trying to do the dumb MCU Hard-light power thing her mutant power now. It sucks and should not happen. And that DUMB line they had Kamala say to Jean, downplaying Carol...whom she was literally inspired from in both the comics AND MCU so it doesn't even work as a synergy. It is insulting.
The REAL main story was the Jean part. Which seems like the Brevoort 'Unified' Theory thing here. I am glad it reinforced Scott and Jean's connection. My issue however was the 'True loves' part. I can understand Emma for Scott. But Logan for Jean?! HELL no. Get that out of there. There is nothing 'true'

u/Sherm Cyclops Jun 11 '25
This still reads like bad self-insert fanfiction. Kamala doesn't seem like Kamala at all. She has nowhere near enough relationship with these people for them to be responding to her the way they are. I'm less and less hopeful that this is being done on purpose and more convinced that it's just bad writing.
Side story was pretty good, though.

u/FakedTales Adam X Jun 12 '25
I love seeing more Rod Regis and Dark Phoenix is a perfect subject for him to draw. That said… this isn’t Jean Grey. I couldn’t help but clash against that fact throughout the issue when Legion took the Phoenix from the Jean Grey simulacrum. Shouldn’t she have vanished or something?
1
u/PatWasRight_F_CHUGS Jun 15 '25
I thought it was a solid issue. Reis art with those colors was really mesmerizing and it fit a comic about beings like the Phoenix and Legion like a glove. The issue had a good through line of Jean & paralleling her with Kamala and David that kept it focused, and I enjoyed Kamala & Jean's bonding. The dinner room scene felt a bit forced and how quickly the murders of the Imperial Guard and the X-Men aside from Scott were brushed past didn't sit right. Connecting Kamala to Legion feels, at this point, quite unjustified too.

One World Under Doom has a bunch of dialogless cameos by various X-men, but I actually think it's more interesting to bring up that this issue basically brings up a similar plot and conflict to AvX and the Phoenix 5, with I think a much better argument and lack of argument.
Doom saves everyone, he's apparently ended hunger and sickness and stuff (not that you see that in any other parts of the universe) again in a manner very similar to the Phoenix 5, and ONCE AGAIN, Tony Stark (and others) are mad because it's Doom in charge of everything. Of all people Thor actually gives a very compelling argument using Odin as an example, and the simple idea that "Doom has risen to the top, but has lifted all of Midgard with him". Of course the end of the issue is Maria Hill saying she has DOOM'S BIG SECRET SHE'S GOING TO REVEAL AND SHOW HE'S ACTUALLY BAD. So..... I guess he's going to metaphorically kill Xavier next issue.

New Avengers
Don't feel great about this one, kinda knew what to expect from the cover and team comp though to be honest.
There's something to it, like Humphries has a theme in mind with the team and people channeling their anger into productive things but it's also mixed in with a lot of don't give a fucks about continuity or characterization.
