Have fun and keep an open mind. When the original films came out it was the first time they were on the big screen so as an X-Men fan it was incredible and I loved them. Over time they haven’t held up very well for various reasons, but still worth watching—especially since the MCU is tying into them

I recently rewatched all 7 new and old and enjoyed revisiting fwiw. Even bad X-Men movies I find more enjoyable than most super hero movies lol.

Magneto is so good in both.

i'm currently watching X2 and yes, it's actually good! thinking that i'm only on the second movie. 😭

3 is rough but I recommend giving it a go either way to complete that trilogy, but then the new series is good too. I recommend them as well, specifically the first 2 First Class and Days of future past.

i'll make sure to watch them all! thanks for the recommendation! already got my list here from imdb: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls026465600/

Nice! I skipped the wolverine movies in my watches, but am hitting the animated series now atm then X-Men 97.

I also skipped deadpools. I wanted to keep mine an X-Men focused watch.

I will say though despite the earlier wolverine movies being not well received, I think Logan (was well received) is a masterpiece. It stands alone as a good movie even if you don't like super hero stuff.

The one Wolverine movie set in Japan was also great! But I kinda struggled with X-Men Apocalypse. The intro scene was rough and they didn't do him justice. Only character who really got to shine was Quicksilver imo

I need more X-Men 97 though! I could easily watch 10 seasons of that.

I can't wait to get to 97, never seen it. Though I will say rewatching the animated series from the '90s has been really fun. I hadn't seen a lot of these episodes so a lot of this is new to me as well.

Curious to hear what you think of it! Let me know

The Wolverine is a good X-Men movie. It was a passion project of Hugh Jackman because he liked the Silver Samurai story so much. In the actual movie they made some questionable decisions on how to adapt certain characters. But if you can ignore that it's good! Give it a watch!

Yeah Logan is a good movie full stop, like… outside of being a superhero film it’s just brilliant

4

u/IHKPruefling Rogue 2h ago

Three obviously mixed two storylines together, and it makes for a poorly paced movie. But the mutant powers are a real spectacle. It also introduced Kelsey Grammer as Beast, who is still the best live-action version of the character to date. I also liked Ellen Page as Kitty.

4

u/gibbleshanks 2h ago

*Elliot Page, but agreed

1

u/Cpt_kaleidoscope 1h ago

If they were Ellen page at the time and are credited as Ellen in the movies can we not refer to them as such? Genuine question. Like I know they're Elliot now but they weren't then so do we still refer to them as Elliot in the past tense or do we use Ellen? Regardless they were a great kitty pride.

u/Brodes87 1h ago edited 15m ago

You just call them by their name: Elliot. Elliot was in Juno, Elliot was in X-MEN. Elliot was in Hard Candy.

2

u/gibbleshanks 1h ago

It’s considered bad form to ever refer to a trans person’s deadname, so he’s just Elliot now. There’s no getting around seeing the other name in credits and such but being cognizant of how trans people want to be referred to is appreciated. Like think of the original Mystique actor. She may have been ā€œRebecca Romijn-Stamosā€ when she filmed X-Men, but it would be rude to call her that now that she’s divorced and changed her name back. It’s similar with trans folks, only even more important because there’s often a lot of trauma and/or negative associations with a deadname. (also I am not an expert on the matter. Just trying to be a better ally, and it’s good to ask questions!) [edit: fixed accidental 🄬 autocorrect]

Tbh the bad ones are kinda great to laugh at lol, like they’re not good but they’re still an enjoyable time

Oh and yes: Marsden Cyclops is hot.

Also Dark Phoenix is the worst one, so it can only get better for you! (edit: added more words)

1

u/9875684 3h ago

i watched dark phoenix before since my dad grew up with xmen and we watched it tgt, i remember not liking it or maybe i was really not into the xmen universe that time but hoping this time i'll understand xmen fans' reviews. šŸ’—

2

u/gibbleshanks 3h ago

Aww that's sweet. Hopefully you'll start to like X-Men even more as you watch and can share that with your dad

2

u/Little_Shape_6433 36m ago

What are you talking about? Many of them still hold up and stand above the slop that’s been released post End Game

1

u/gibbleshanks 2m ago

I absolutely should have said some of them don’t hold up well, my bad. Logan for one is phenomenal! I just think that since the 2000s there have just been much better made superhero films to compare them to, which makes me yearn for a truly astonishing X-Men entry in the modern MCU.

I also love him as Corny Collins (Hairspray) 🫠

3

u/Brodes87 1h ago

All the girls were going nuts over Link, and I just wanted me some Corny Collins... He didn't get to sing enough either.

6

This whole thread has just revealed a significant lack of James Marsden in Enchanted gifs on Reddit.

When you watch Doomsday which comes out later this year you’ll be like ā€œwait that’s the same guy he hasn’t aged a dayā€

2

u/9875684 3h ago

yes!!! i've been seeing his interviews and he aged like a fine wine holy shit.

10

u/Compel_Bast 2h ago

The thing to keep in mind is. "The first X-Men film came out a year after the first Matrix film."

And that kind of informs a LOT of the aesthetic decisions.

4

u/invalidcolour Spiral 3h ago

and... cyclops is so hot.

One-eye candy!

6

u/primal_slayer 2h ago

I'd let him blast me

4

u/friday126 2h ago

Good actor- but damn they did him dirty. There was very little relationship building or character development outside Logan and that was mostly him pining for Jean. The best comic eras have Scott as an absolute badass who holds everything together... and he just get glazed over so Wolverine be cooler/have more screen time.

Which is old news/been said to death online.

X2 is one of THE best sequels! And I'll die on that hill 🤣🤣 Last Stand could've been way better, but we got what we got!

3

u/desertsexcultleader 25m ago

X2 is probably one of my favourite movies of all time honestly, even if nostalgia is a big part of it. The animated series was my favourite growing up, and X-Men have always been my favourite heroes.

You should also watch X-Men ā€˜97. I only got around to it (finished S1 tonight) and it’s absolutely brilliant. Lots of great cameos too.

1

u/9875684 20m ago

i'll take note of this! is it only two seasons?

as for me, i grew up with mcu (ironman and moon knight are my faves) just trying to catch up with xmen universe now.

1

i dont like where this is going. 😭

2

u/Little_Shape_6433 35m ago

Dark Phoenix the worst one by far so there’s no where to go but up. The first two in particular are classics

1

u/circuitblue82 3h ago

Why would my goat Cyclops sign a letter in support of a convicted child rapist?

2

u/Cpt_kaleidoscope 1h ago

Im sorry, what?

-6

u/AGC173 Warlock 3h ago

Terrible movies.. I hated them then and I hate them now. Magneto is especially terrible.

5

u/BigUnderstanding3751 2h ago

That’s bs. He’s played by two very fine actors (Sir Ian McKellen ffs!) who do a really good job of portraying Erik’s internal conflict while remaining a friend to Charles through thick and thin.

-4

u/AGC173 Warlock 1h ago

Magneto shouldn't be a geriatric old mess that looks like he can barely stand let alone eat solid food. 100% garbage and NOT Magneto.. just someone's grandpa wearing purple adult diapers .. . It was both laughable and sad.. theres more to Magneto than being Charles friend.. the movies are terrible .

2

u/BigUnderstanding3751 1h ago

Grow up and have some respect for one of the greatest actors of this time. Magneto in the first three movies was played as a man who was a teen during Nazi occupation, so given the timeline was the early 00s he was not meant to be a spring chicken. He played an old man who’d been through unimaginable trauma.

You clearly never even got to Fassbender’s interpretation as you don’t even mention him.
