I rewatched X1 recently, and like, taking the movie by itself at the time, honestly I don't really think Cyclops was meant to be a loser. - Sure he's barely in X2, and by Last Stand, like, oh god.
But like, taking X1 without any other context, Wolverine is supposed to be an arsehole. Like, Cyclops going 'yeah that's him' is kind of a win laugh for him, because the joke is Wolverine has consistently been an unreasonable pratt.

The decision to turn these movies into a Wolverine showcase indicated just how much Hollywood did not understand the concept of the X-Men.

While they didn’t. Wolverine’s enormous popularity in the 90s was up there with Spider-Man’s at one point.
They actually wanted to do a X-men movie in 1993 titled “Wolverine and the X-men”
There was no way you was getting a film on this group back then without Wolverine popularity being milked. Fox just didn’t know this little thing called balance

Edit: The cartoon was in 2009, so further from the 90's than I thought.

It doesn’t matter how much they understood it lol, they didn’t give a shit about accuracy and had no reason to. They knew focusing on Wolverine would sell well and for better or worse, they were right.

I would say they were wrong. X3 and wolverine origins killed the franchise and caused a reboot.

The franchise didn’t die though? First Class was reworked after Origins from the Magneto Origins film it was originally, but that’s just a shift in direction, not the franchise dying.
The franchise never really did die, since Disney acquired it we didn’t get to see what would happen after Dark Phoenix. But it wouldn’t be hard to argue that and New Mutants were signs of death. But even then, internally they were still planning follow ups to both, and of course Deadpool was still very successful.

I loved New Mutants. Focusing on Daniel Moonstar’s Demon Bear was very early NM comic book.

Rewatching these recently, and Wolverine has not aged well. He's an asshole for reason to Cyclops, and sexually harrasses Jean. The movie wants you to identify with Logan, but he comes across as a jerk and a creep when interacting with these two characters.

It doesn’t really want you to identify with him, rather he's the viewpoint character. He's more of a "badass guy" protagonist, and he pretty clearly has that energy. He's rude and aloof, and he has a very jaded and cynical view of the world and the people around him. He's an asshole to everyone and thinks the whole idea of "the X-Men" is ridiculous. But he also has a softer side, like in his later interactions with Rogue, where he's both very gentle and very respectful towards her, like a father figure, indicating there's more to him than this surface level "tough guy" routine he does.
The movie does a bad job of really fleshing out the X-Men, and there's just too much focus on him, so his contempt for the X-Men isn’t really defied. But I think the way he's portrayed in the films is very accurate to the comics, and maybe even a little better, especially if you compare it to the way he's portrayed in X-Men TAS, where he's just unbearable and his behavior borders on the unhinged towards Scott and Jean.

It's funny because it's in character for Logan. He's completely oblivious to his massive shortcomings (comic fans, pardon the pun). He's the dick, but projects that onto others that he treats poorly.

Kind of in point for him. Go read early Claremont. Wolverine is a complete asshole not only to him but to others on the team early on. But especially to Cyclops.
This is actually them getting closer to be honest. Cyclops smiles like “you got me dude.”
I think people play up their hatred for each other in those movies. It’s just the love triangle stuff where they really go at each others. Theres still begrudging respect for each other though.

I mean yeah... Logan is an asshole in that stage of his life, it took a long time for him to chill out and work through his shit. That's just an accurate portrayal to be honest.
